True, but every time something appears on Macs before PC's, the Mac fanbois all come running out to make sure everyone knows that Apple did it first.
Personally I want to see Blu Ray everywhere, but that's just my preference and has been since before it started to look like Blu Ray was winning the format war. The jury is still out but it looks like that trend will continue, especially with the PS/3 picking up some steam and now this development.
First of all, the 8 core Mac Pro has been shipping for 3 weeks. Second, the demonstration spoken of was in January, well before said Mac shipped. What exactly was your point? Fanboyism?
I agree for the most part, except the part about liquid water. Yes, methane or ammonia could also be the enabling solvents for life, and they (the scientists) are aware of this. However, for various reasons water is still the best candidate for said solvent and is quite abundant. Part of the reason is temperature; ammonia and methane are liquid at very low temperatures which has implications about the amount of energy available for life.
Life *as we know it* is the term they often use. Carbon based life. Seeing as both carbon and water are fairly abundant and that our body of knowledge is obviously skewed towards life as we know it, it's a good place to start.
A monoculture is not 'diluted' by various compteting camps. The very nature of Open Source allows for such diversity that it will obviously be split ito smaller groups of enthusiasts. It's the nature of the beast.
Agreed on the wet marble count. I just prefer more specificity and accuracy in comments and article descriptions. This newly discovered planet could be made up of mostly water, or it could be a water covered rock like our home.
but given that most people resize images to put on Flickr
Most people with digital cameras don't even know what flickr is. They email their pics to relatives or print them out, or just save them on their hard drive.
I'm getting a sense that slashdot is in a way getting like Washington DC. People inside the beltway are totally detatched from what the majority of people are doing in their lives, and so is slashdot.
Newsflash: investments flow to companies that stand a chance at making money.
The problem is with current patent laws and the incompetence of the Patent Office with regards to IP. Companies exist to make a profit within the bounds of the law. The law is what we should be focusing on here, not the obvious fact that investors want to...wait for it...get a return on their investment.
Please cite where in the DMCA that it is made illegal to remove software from your computer. I'm against the DMCA as much as you are, but that is just pure FUD. Yes, I've read the entire act. Have you even read it?
I disagree. They could quite easily add extensions to the microcode and architecture that would allow harder to break DRM (there is no such thing as impossible to break). The key(s) would leak due to human nature though so it would be a futile effort.
Well, since the client code is released under the GPL, there is no reason to expect anything else for the server code. Of course they could use a more restrictive license, but from their press release and comments on their website I'm thinking it will be GPL.
They also offer a commercial license for those who prefer it.
Yes I am. Current patent and copyright law is horribly broken with regards to the 'digital age'. I'm not sure scrapping it totally is in order, but major changes need to be made to avoid all this IP silliness that's going on.
The EU isn't communist but it's by and large *very* socialist in nature so you're close to the mark.
Somehow given some of the economic problems the EU is facing (inflation, rampant unemployment, etc.)they are the *last* people who should be telling *anyone* how to run their business.
The only mechanism that should set prices is the market. No government should be involved in pricing, and that includes the US as well as the EU (here in the US various agricultural subsidies are used to provide this effect, such as keeping the prices of milk and sugar at certain levels).
What I find interesting is the role reversal. Intel in it's current generations is focused more on improving IPC. AMD seems to have hit the IPC wall and is instead focusing on clock speed increases. It's a reverse of what the situation was a few years ago, with AMD touting how much more elegant it's architecture was with it's higher IPC than Netburst, and Intel pushing high clock speed as it's answer.
Of course it's possible. War has always driven technology development in various fields, including medical applications.

Except it can be freely downloaded, burnt, given away, etc. You can't do that with a commercial offline encyclopedia, at least not legally.
Prior art: photosynthesis.

I'll bring the Maalox if you bring the Matlock DVDs. Cmdrtaco said he'll bring the Depends.
Yeah yeah I know I was being a smart ass. Sorry about that (sort of).
I haven't seen a thing about this implosion of McCain's yet. This is the only place I've heard about it.
Does anyone even watch the Daily Show anymore? I mean other than you.

I'm still waiting for the citation from the DMCA. Your scenario is pure BS from my reading of it, but IANAL.
Bash the DMCA for real reasons, not made up ones.
Models indicate the planet is either rocky like the Earth or covered in an ocean.
Last time I checked, the Earth's surface is 75% covered by water.
It's been going on since before Hammurabi wrote down his laws. Maybe it's hard coded into our DNA at some level.

Please do not confuse this discussion with facts. It makes the slashbots angry.

I doubt that DARPA cares much about DRM, and if AMD and Intel wanted to they could have already hidden encryption keys on their CPU's.

You mean The Republic of China.
At least fact check before you start being pedantic or try to act smart.
Taiwain is just an island. The country is called the Republic of China.
