  1. Finding new things is surprising? on Surprising Further Evidence for a Wet Mars · · Score: 3, Insightful

We still find new and interesting things here on Earth after a couple of million years of hominids running around. I fail to see how *anything* short of walking talking Martians would really be a shocker on Mars given how little we've covered of it.

My time is valuable, but the one time I had a problem with a company charging my card when I'd cancelled service it took about 45 seconds on the phone and one email sent to fix it. I also got reimbursed for the charge that incurred for pushing me just over my credit limit. All by being honest and using the proper channels...

Yes, it does. It just uses a different set of rules than for broadcast TV. In fact, the FCC is looking at tightening those up, and it's already in their power to do so.

So has every other HP PC I've owned over the many years. I found a much higher failure rate with Compaq personally, so maybe that's where you're getting your impression.

You *might* be correct, but I have learned to stay away from absolute statements when possible. I'm sure someone somewhere once said we would never fire came from any more than our dogs did.

Simply put, we are not capable of understanding what our human descendants or our descendant species will be able to understand. To pretend otherwise is mere hubris.

And we probably never will be able to. That is what makes discussions like this purely academic. There is no known way to prove or disprove free will. I happen to believe I have it, but I can't prove it. Maybe someday our intelligence will evolve to a point where we will be able to answer these questions.

Even if we make a machine that *seems* to exhibit free will, we won't be any closer to understanding the subject. For now these discussions and dissertations are firmly entrenched in the realm of philospophy, not science.

While it would be nice to have the ability to download new skills (a la 'The Matrix'), I somehow think there are other limiting factors (I won't get into the need to train the rest of the nervous and muscular systems before one can say "Whoa, I know Kung Fu").

Good thinking fodder though. I'll plod my low bandwith way through it some more after I do some work.
