I think you missed the point. What is new about it is that Microsoft will actually support running Linux on it's Virtual Server product. That means if an enterprise needs technical support they won't get 'sorry, but we don't support running Linux on our product, so you're on your own'.
Having formal support means everything to most organizations.
I work for a fairly large (100,000 worldwide seats) Dell customer, and have consulted for many others. None of them are screaming for AMD. I wish they were for many reasons, not the least of which my personal preference, but it just ain't so.
I agree that if they open sourced it then the porting to other archs would be far easier, since other people would do the work for them. They don't 'need' to do that though. Sure, it would be nice, but it's hardly required.
Don't be ridiculous; I said nothing of the sort. I said we need to start. It will take years, maybe generations, for us to start actual colonization. That's the very reason we need to start now rather than later.
The problem with your reasoning is that we may not have the resources to do it in a generation or so. If we don't do it now, there is every chance that we never will.
Your arguement is almost like saying that a one year old shouldn't try to walk because they'll be inefficient at it, it will be expensive (energy and time wise), and that they should wait until the technology (their musulature and nervous system) is more developed.
Was the price on the Dutch site with or without the huge VAT in Europe? I am not an expert on your VAT's, but I thought prices had to be displayed given the total with tax?
We built a table out of a large door that we coated with paint that was able to be drawn on easily with chalk. We drew a grid on it and voila...the DM could use chalk to his heart's content. One of the things I liked about pen and paper gaming was there was no high tech required.
What the heck, I can burn Karma by being off topic.
That one was good, but in general I think Penny Arcade jumped the shark awhile ago. Is it just me or are half their comics only about half as funny as they were half a year or so ago? I really think they are going downhill fast.
Hey, this is Slashdot. Since when do you expect accuracy?
Slashdot: News for Nerds, Editors who don't Edit;)
The jury is still out as to whether it's really ice or not. Still, the possibility is enticing. Not only would it be a much needed resource for manned exploration, but it also would greatly increase the chances of life existing there.
They are talking about people who violate restraining orders here. The vast majority of those cases involve domsetic violence. You're arguement might be appropriate in another discussion, but it's a bit off topic for this one.
You must forget that we're talking about the people who make the laws. Your statement about whether the NSA can lawfully monitor US citizens shows your lack of thinking here. If it was possible for them to pass a law *creating* the DHS, then it was certainly possible for them to pass a law *modifying* the NSA, FBI, CIA, or whatever other acronym you want.
Only your parent post was talking fact, whereas you are talking speculation. Right now it IS against the law for the NSA to conduct surveillance on US citizens. There has been no legistation introduced as yet to change that.
True, but nothing beats having real users hammering on something. Why risk testing new search technologies on their primary search engine site when they can have Wikipedia to play with. I think it's a great idea.
That wasn't what I said. I was talking about support with regards to getting the OS up and running, not how to use an outdated text editor ;)

Especially with Linux use as a server platform keeps growing in leaps and bounds.
I noticed (yes I RTFA) that they are also going to license their virtual disk format royalty free.
They have a bit of a hard road to climb it they want to compete with VMWare, but Microsoft certainly has the muscle to do so.
They (the accusers) would probably try to argue something silly like 'downloading with intent to violate copyright'.

It's disheartening to see pedantic grammar and spelling nazis who are too cowardly to post as anything other than an AC.
:-)
Go ahead, mod this off topic because it is. I'm just sick of the asshats
Cross Platform != Open Source

Try to keep up. Software patents are a *good* thing when used against Microsoft!
(for the humor impaired, that was meant to be tongue in cheek)

All the more reason to start now, rather than wait.

.NET is a virus!!!
His negative opinion appears to be against freeloaders, not people who hate ads. Don't like ads? That's fine, then don't use the service. Easy enough.

Um, obviously it would need to be distilled and/or filtered. I was also thinking about the abundant Oxygen and Hydrogen (for breathing, fuel, etc.).

Once again, the need for a -1, Humorless mod shows itself.
Providing a 'somewhat valid service'?? Come on, the only real reason he's doing this is the money, and now it's on Slashdot as well! More money!
No, most of them hate them because that's what the rest of the crowd is doing. Like I said, it's fashionable.
Yes, and serials.ws certainly has just as much name recognition out there as Yahoo .
The point being made here is that it's a good thing to see mainstream support for alternative browsers.
