They are just a fad and will fade away just like TV and the Web did. Oh wait...
I'm afraid social networking sites are here to stay, unfortunately. I agree with a lot of people here that at least currently they are insecure and have few if any redeeming qualities. However, an entire generation or two is growing up using them. It's going to be a hard habit to break. Maybe the fad part will wear off some but they are probably here to stay.
Fewer and fewer people seem to care about how their actions affect other people around them these days. It's not surprising. We live in a 'ME ME ME' society nowadays.
As long as the steam engine has to carry all the mass it'll ever use it will never be useful for seriously long trips. It would need to stop frequently for more coal and water as a power source for that. But it's mildly interesting anyway.
Does anyone actually like or use it? I know the first thing I do on a new Mac is download Firefox and Camino. I am not sure whey but I've always found Safari to be annoying for some reasons. Perhaps it's just me.
Exactly. Just like I could go out and start a new football league and the NFL couldn't do a thing about it as long as I wrote the rules down in my own format/words and didn't use their logos. You cannot copyright the actual rules to a game.
Everyone has their opinion I guess. I thought that every bit of 'literature' written in the D&D realms was total crap. Then again I'm also an old timer and started playing LONG before anyone thought of making a quick buck by writing some crappy novels based on the game.
Some can, yes. I agree that it's tragic. Banning peanut butter is not the answer. I hate to sound callous, but if someone is THAT allergic to a common food and they die, perhaps it is natural selection at work?
That was my first thought as well, the drama queen bit. If we start banning everything that could potentially hurt or kill anyone, no matter how small or large a segement of the population, we'll soon have very little left.
It is unfortunate that some people have potentially life threatening allergies. My mother is allergic to beestings. If she gets stung she has about a half an hour to live if she doesn't get her shot. Let's kill all the bees! (not)
If someone has a deadly allergy they should do their best to avoid the allergen.
OS X runs just fine on SSE3 equipped AMD CPU's as it stands. It's not supported of course but it runs just fine. They (Apple) could easily support AMD even if they didn't optimize for them quite as much as they do for the Core 2 architecture. Frankly, I'm not sure the difference would be all that noticeable compared to the already noticeable delta in performance between the two main x86 architectures.
We rely on it as a force multiplier, yes. That's different than having your force totally immobilized. There will always be a place for individual soldiers in the field, at least until when and if we get 'real' AI. Even then, do you want non-human intelligences controlling weapon's platforms anymore than they already do (AEGIS for one). Given that fact it makes perfect sense to augment the individual soldier's physical abilities and level of protection.
Agreed. That is why I said 'concern' and not 'alarm' or 'panic'. I would not quite liken it to the US/Soviet dynamic though. Neither country was in danger of falling to radical Islamist groups, and Pakistan is. Why would people who do not hesitate to commit terrorism balk at upping the ante and going nuclear?
I am actually addicted to Medieval 2: Total War at the moment, but I am anticipating losing many hours to Starcraft II. I usually accompany my gaming with better fare though. A nice homebrewed IPA and some cheddar perhaps, or even some smoked salmon.
Remote control will probably never be quite as good as having a human brain inside guiding it. The idea is to augment a soldier's physical abilities. As we know they already have battle robots that are operated remotely. This fills a different need. It's hard to judge how fast technology progresses or will progress, but I can conceive of Starship Trooper (the book, not that horrid movie) style gear in a hundred years or less.
I want an advanced armored exoskeleton. Make it fly too. I can do without the repulors if I MUST, but please do give me a big flamethrower and a chaingun on my model. Maybe some shoulder mounted RPG's too?
Go compare some benchmarks on like priced CPU's from Intel and AMD. I think you'll be surprised who the actual winner of the price/performance ratio is these days. It's not AMD.
I know, benchmarks are artificial, but it's really the only way to empirically compare the two.
The top 5% of earners account for 60% of Income Tax revenue in the US and pay a much higher percentage rate. The 'working poor' mostly pay zero Federal Income Tax.
As for 'tax cuts for the rich', I am hardly rich yet somehow I magically saved quite a bit of money on the last round of cuts. I might be on the bottom rung of 'upper middle class' if you count mine and my wife's income.
It's a very tired meme you are repeating, and very inaccurate.
Except that 'Allow' will be greyed out.
I think I'll hit lycos and altavista and see what I can find about that phenomena...you know, web sites that lose out to hungrier/better newcomers.

Moral of the story: you have to start somewhere.

Software only OpenGL is horribly slow without a GPU to accellerate it, no matter how many SIMD extensions you have at your disposal.

TIE Fighter's, anyone? (Twin Ion Engine, for those of you who are not true geeks)
Should everyone wear a sterile suit and mask so that people with immunodeficiencies do not have to live inside a plastic bubble?

Agreed. It almost looks like they threw everything they could think of into it, only without much thought.
Not if I have anything to say about it *heads to the Tardis to form his plan and get his screwdriver*

Why not? The potential for the control signal to be jammed, for one. I'm sure there are many other valid reasons.
Thank you. I needed a good laugh today :)

Yeah. One party will try to enslave us just slightly faster than the other. It's so nice having a clear choice. (sarcasm intended)
