Elitist much? You can hack away at config files all you want still. Having nice GUI configuration options for people who want them is a good thing. Get your head out of the 90's maybe and look around before you go spouting off such elitist drivel.
I've been using Linux since LONG before it was fashionable. I like hacking around on the system. I also like the fact that there are distros out that make it easier for the causal user to configure their system.
It's people like you who sterotype all cavemen that are the problem, you insensitive clod. Some of them hunt, or sell rocks, or whatever it is they do. It's not just about selling insurance!
My tongue was only half in my cheek. I stopped running any and all distributed clients a couple of years ago precisely because of the resultant power/CPU utilization. I didn't do it for the environment though as I alluded to in my joke. I did it to save money on my electrical bill.
Just think of all the global warming caused by all those CPU's and GPU's cranking away day and night! And all that electricity used! The horror! They are making Al Gore cry!
(I am joking, for those of you who are humor impaired)
You make me feel so old. Zilog made the CPU for my first personal computer. Over the years I've used Motorola, IBM, Intel, and AMD chips. No company has my loyalty in that regard; I buy what works best for my needs at the time.
There is a big difference with an individual software package not being GPL compatible and an entire platform being so. Locking out free software may not have been Apple's actual intent but they have done so.
I guess I am just not surprised even a little. I love their products and own a few, but I am getting to like Apple the company less and less. I've *never* liked Jobs but I recognize his effectiveness over the years and respect him for it.
I thought we already knew that the iPhone SDK license might be unfriendly to free software. It shouldn't really surprise anyone should it?
People should really read what they agree to but of course they don't most of the time. Of course, the/. crowd as a whole probably does so far more than most demographics.
The school one went to ranks about last on the list of determining factors as to whether I hire someone or not. It *might* be used as a tie breaker if two candidates seem equally good. Personality, perceived work ethic, and many other factors are far more important. Besides, generally a new grad has to unlearn so much in order to function in the real world that it really doesn't matter as much as people might think.
That is the opinion of many people in Government. Every time I hear one talk about the 'cost' of a tax cut I cringe. They never bother to talk about the cost to the taxpayer because they don't see it that way. In their minds it is ALL their money and they magnanamously allow us to keep some of it.
If they can work out the bugs, immersing the pilot in some sort of oxygenated Perflourocarbon would enable then to withstand far higher G's. Right now it's still the realm of Sci Fi but it's quite possible.
Isn't "proper distribution channels" an artificial construct to bilk customers?
Wow. Just...wow. A proper distribution channel exists so a company that spends money on R&D, engineering, manufaturing, etc. can turn a (relatively low margin) profit.
I just love how you rationalize that it's OK to buy counterfeit gear just because it's cheaper. Cutting out the 'evil capitalistic profits' eh? If it were not for profit there would be no incentive for DFI or any other company to make any product in the first place.
You show either a very shallow understanding of economics or a strong Marxist bias. Or it could just be you didn't have your coffee before you posted, or you just want to rationalize your purchase of low cost counterfeit products so you don't feel guilty.
I understand that. My point as about EULA's and about the fact that if Apple wants to restrict OS X to Apple only hardware then they should require proof of Mac ownership in order to buy a copy. They do not. If anyone can buy one then anyone should be able to install it on any computer. That goes for little shops that decide to sell hardware to run it on.
I know why Jobs cares. He is every bit as much a wannabe monopolist as is Gates. He loves total control and complete product lock down. I don't hate Apple, like I said I have a Mac. What I hate is the hypocrisy exhibited by zealots.
So are they good and enforcable this week, or evil and unenforceable? Seeing as this pertains to Apple it's probably a coin toss. The fanbois will all chime in with how it's such a good thing that Apple restricts what hardware one can run OS X on, and how this company should be shut down. If this were about some MS EULA there would be a firestorm about how EULA's are bogus anyways and unenforceble.
If I buy OS X I'll damn well run it on any machine I want. In fact, one of my two OS X machines is *not* Appple Branded. That's right, it's a Hackintosh. Sue me, Jobs.
If they don't like their IT options they are free to get a job elsewhere. When they are paying for the infrastructure and cost of management then they can fiddle.
I'm pretty sure the people who advocate letting users manage their own machines and letting 'super' users play around have never had to manage any IT shop bigger than like 50-100 users.
Put them to work? People who often know enough to be dangerous? Not likely, and as already pointed out in this discussion, why would they want to work for free? They do have other jobs, which I might add they are supposed to be doing instead of messing around.
I do not have a facebook page and never will.
I think he may have meant India. The fact that India and Pakistan are enemies and both have nukes should be some cause for concern.

Knock them out??? If anyone says it to me they will never find the teeny tiny body parts scattered all over the country.
You beat me to it, but I was going to distill it into a thought ballon:
ISO . o O ( $$$$$$$$$ )

Excellent point! However, speaking only for myself of course, I RTFA about half the time, and I read licenses/EULA's 100% of the time.

Quite correct, but when Slashdot went commercial .org's were still expected to be non-commerical. The call of hypocrisy is valid.

Sure, because nothing could possibly go wrong if we start wide scale deliberate tampering with thunderstorm activity.
A lot of people act like 13 year olds but are really much older in MMO land, as well. Sad but true.

(sarcasm on)Yes, I am sure there are no scientific or enginnering applications for accellerated physics calculations (sarcasm off).
Anyone ever tell you that a lot of scientific types use Linux on their workstations? They do.
