I didn't realize it's not patriotic to get on one knee during the anthem. Man, all those people who get on a knee when knighted by the Queen have been openly mocking her all this time and she didn't even know!
To protest at an injustice is the highest form of patriotism. To sit/stand idly by and let injustice occur is the exact opposite of patriotism.
Sigh As a hiring manager, I know this pain all too well. You have a great candidate but they utter the dreaded words, "I'd like to make some changes to the contract please"
I know this means sending up the mgmt chain for approvals. That's at least a month gone. Then I have to actually submit it to legal. 2 months, if you're lucky. Then, send back the new version to the candidate, who realistically has gone on to find a new job by then.
Dude, no way. I know it's not popular to say this with the "Cool Crowd" but almost everything Marvel has put out has been fantastic. Avengers: Infinity War was amazing, as was Black Panther.
I, for one, wish Marvel continues making superhero movies.
I *think* it's because some countries/jurisdictions require the hotel to capture certain details, including the passport number. So they're obligated to get it, but clearly they didn't think ahead and actually store that data appropriately
Actually, what's more likely is:
Boss We need to capture Passport info to be in compliance with blah, blah DB admin/Developer No problem, we need a secure database back end with limited access, auditing capability, and secure..... Boss No, what? No! We don't have money or time for that. Just make it happen DB admin/Developer But this goes against every principle of data management and storage. What if I just... Boss Listen, you're making this overly complicated OK? We're not going to get hacked, just put in an exclamation mark in the regular password I use, Ok?
A few months later, they get hacked. Developer bears the brunt of the fallout. Boss goes on a nice vacation courtesy of the huge bonus he received a few months prior for "implementing a method to remain compliant with blah, blah law"
Bear in mind that Audi (and a bunch of others) already use QNX as their backend for infotainment. I imagine switching from one vendor to another is a laborious and challenging problem that they likely want to avoid. QNX also runs on practically any hardware so the chip type is almost irrelevant.
Canadian here. I just spent the last 5 mins thinking of all the people that I know and how many of them have a single car. And I couldn't come up with one. I have friends and colleagues who live in downtown Toronto and they have two cars. My elderly in-laws have two cars. We have three cars, all of which serve different purposes. Truck for hauling large loads (we have a few acres and like to do gardening), Hybrid PHEV for daily commute to/from work, convertible for the summer).
Even Muskoka has a supercharger station, close to Bracebridge which should qualify as "the middle of nowhere". Parts of Muskoka region are well developed, but there are huge parts of it that are not. Since I live in KW, it does take me around 3 hours to get to the cabin and it's definitely in the wilderness. No cell signal for miles, no roads, no electricity.
Dude, there's plenty of people buying $60K+ cars. Think of any of the following you might see on any given day and understand they are way more than 60K:
Mercedes S-Class (practically any model)
Mercedes E-Class (almost every model)
Mercedes GL-Class (practically any model)
BMW 7-Series (practically any model)
BMW 5, 6 Series (almost every model)
Audi 6,7,8 Series (almost every model)
Range Rover (almost every model)
Jaguar (almost every model)
Porsche (every model)
There's probably 30 other models/brands you can add to that list. Hell, my Ford Fusion cost me close to 50K.
If there's one thing I know that's true in business, it's that any review process designed to prevent illegal / unethical / wrong behavior is going to be circumvented 5 different ways from Sunday.
In most cases, these "processes" or "audits" exist to be used against lower accountability staff rather than anyone at the C-Level
" If our defense budget was cut in half, which freedoms would I lose?"*
The former half. Which would leave you with "doms" so either you'd be really sore after a workout or you'd be dressed in latex with a rubber ball in your mouth. Either way, you're gonna be in pain.
I mean, I know 1/6 is less than 5/6. But, dude(tte), you're spending 1/6 of your money on the Military when in reality you haven't really accomplished much with it. Any responsible country would take a long hard look at the number and turn that 1/6 into 1/116 pretty quickly.
The one thing thing I really notice but never did before is the intake of breath a singer makes before singing a line. It's completely natural, of course, but I get very distracted by it, to the point of anticipating and focusing on that just to make sure I'm actually hearing it
Ah, makes sense. I guess I just don't know what I'm missing in that case if my otherwise-fine hearing is incapable of picking up subtle sounds. That leads to a weird feeling - what if I'm hearing something like Bohemian Rhapsody in a way that is very different to someone who can pick out all the different sounds that I cannot?
Depending on where you live (especially the UK), as you go about your daily life, the chances are that you're recorded on a bunch of CCTV's. Some private, some not. Of course, only a tiny number of them actually have face recognition abilities but it's a bit scary if you think about it
Unless face recognition has made some incredible improvements, I bet 95%+ of their 'hits' are false positives, especially at a concert with 10,000+ people all milling through a small number of entrances, wearing scarves, hats, glasses etc. etc.
All that being said... and I'm sad to even consider saying this, but if I'm going to an event where there's 10,000+ other people, and there's a statistical chance of at least some of them being unstable, and some percentage of them being willing to do something to harm people, I'd want the authorities doing what they can to identify and remove them. Maybe it's not facial recognition, maybe there's a better option but maybe facial recognition is all they have for now..
You CAN use Bluetooth on airplanes. I do it all the time. When I enable flight mode on my phone (S9+), it disables WiFi and Cellular radio but not Bluetooth.
Also, the FAA permits Bluetooth:
https://www.faa.gov/news/press...
Excerpt:
"Devices must be used in airplane mode or with the cellular connection disabled. You may use the WiFi connection on your device if the plane has an installed WiFi system and the airline allows its use. You can also continue to use short-range Bluetooth accessories, like wireless keyboards."
I use Anker wireless around-the-ear headphones when I'm working out. I started around 2 years ago and will never go back to wired headphones - there's nothing more annoying than cords getting caught on something, or you're on the treadmill and move just a little too far back and your phone gets tugged and ends up flying off
The battery lasts for at least 8 hours which is good for 4 days workout. Charging them is easy, just plug into any micro-USB cable. It's a trivial inconvenience.
I also don't understand the 'poor quality' sound comments - I had my annual physical a few months ago which includes a hearing test. Absolutely no issues with my hearing whatsoever. However, I cannot detect any decrease in sound quality of wireless vs. wired, and I've tried really hard. I mean, maybe if you're an audiophile and are listening to very specific notes or music, maybe you can tell the difference. But for the other 95% who listen to music when working out, on the train, or working around the house, I don't know if it's really a problem

Corporate bureaucracy FTW

Can you really though? I mean, folks can't even get down one knee during the anthem without the President calling them "sons of bitches"

lol yup. in KW region, we regularly get 30C+ summer days, the 25C+ weather even extended well into Autumn/Fall in 2018..
And just WHO do you think will be writing the software for these "Infotainment Systems"?
QNX?

IF they gave that money with no strings attached.
Thanks!

Yep, for sure, it's the phone that's stupid in your diatribe.
If it wasn't for the obvious racism, the "Spend no expense" part was actually rather funny.
I mean, I know 1/6 is less than 5/6. But, dude(tte), you're spending 1/6 of your money on the Military when in reality you haven't really accomplished much with it. Any responsible country would take a long hard look at the number and turn that 1/6 into 1/116 pretty quickly.

I wonder how many people, even on Slashdot would be capable of reviewing, compiling code from source and ensuring it's free of back doors etc?
That number is tiny.
Ah, makes sense. I guess I just don't know what I'm missing in that case if my otherwise-fine hearing is incapable of picking up subtle sounds. All that being said
I suspect you might be American. In Canada, severance applies to everyone. With very, very few exceptions.

Again, also true but I feel like another plane may have left a bigger mark.
And I think Superman would have either avoided it altogether, or would have 'fessed up. On account of being a good guy and all.
Could have been a UFO too (Trying to anticipate your next response)
