Yes you can use your cell phone at your break, I did not say that, and yes I am using a little of their bandwidth. I double as the company's IT manager and have been reading Slashdot for many years as evidenced by mid 5 digit id number. I start here probably for some of the the same reasons most of you do. The point is I have to answer to my clients when work does not get done on time. I am a civil engineer unlike most engineers who read this who are software engineers who produce their own work, I rely very heavily on other people to produce drawings with the designs I have made. When project timelines slip and I see people taking smoke breaks every 45 minutes, standing around BSing, and the quality of the work is bad and tasks that I have asigned aren't taken care obviously there is a problem. In the construction industry every day counts. Obviously you software guys just keep hyping your vaporware so you can be paid to work at a place where you can throw the frisbee or play video games until the company goes public, steals the stockholders money and then folds because it hasn't produced anything. That's real good for all. And I am a big barrel of laughs when the time is right.
I have found that most of my fellow countrymen think they are doing their employers a favor by working for them when it in reality they are doing you a favor by employing you. Everybody wants a great place to work but when employers let the rules slide, the majority of people take advantage of the employer and when the employer cracks down he's an asshole. When I am at work I try to limit the amount of BS time I have. Every hour not billed to the client costs the company money or the client which is worse than jipping the company. I don't smoke and I don't chit chat on the phone or with other co-workers all day long. I am here to do a job and I want to get it done and go home.
I just bought a remanufactured Gateway model from ebay. I have been pleased with it. I leave my keyboard at home and take just the tablet part to work and connect to the network. It is perfect for transporting large quantites of data from work to home and no confusion over where the most current data is. Since our copier will scan documents to the network, I can minimize the amount of trees I carry with me. It does not take much space in my exisitng briefcase. I use it for taking or consulting previously prepared notes during meetings. I admit the input can be cumbersome at times, but I have learned to adapt. One thing I do like about it is that when it is in it's stand, you don't have the main part generating heat sitting in your lap, it acts as it's own radiator.
My only complaint is the damn OS that came with it. But that is another topic http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/06/09/001923 6&mode=thread&tid=106&tid=137&tid= 185
Bruce states that the only two measures to do any help is the reinforcement of the cockpit doors and the teaching of passengers to fight back. Citizens of the US for the most part do not want to be bothered with their own security. It is the same with handguns. I own one and believe I have every right to do so. Citezens need to stand up for themselves and be be prepared to defend themselves and those close to them. The government and police cannot be everywhere all the time, not that would be good either. When you are in your home or a plane it will take some time for the protection services to show up. There is a window of 2 minutes to 2 hours where each person may be called upon to defend themselves.
Most of these techniques of stealing an election, "stationing tow trucks outside the polls to intimidate voters; setting up police roadblocks (as was done in Florida in 2000); intentionally designing confusing ballots; putting people on the ballot with the same name as your opponent; and getting votes the old fashioned way--by buying them" can be used for e voting, too. In addition, usually three people view the paper ballot before recording the vote, no one person reviews ballots and records them. I still don't trust e-voting and never will. No system is perfect, how about some of you coders out there discuss the perfectness of your code. Unless you're coding "Hello World", I don't think so.
I remember back in the day when LPs (aka vinyl) were common, cool stuff was included by the cool bands. The four KISS solos done in the 70's each had poster that were a part a larger one (I had all four). My "Face Dances" album had a cool poster. A band I bought a couple of LPs by called the Feederz, had full jacket sized double sided sheet with cool anarchistic cartoons and sayings. This just a few of the cool things that would come with LPS.
I don't see any of this with today's CDs. Of course I do understand the spatial problems with packaging, but the media companies need to give people an incentive to buy the CD rather than a monetary one. Entice the people into buying the CD so they can get a T-shirt, poster, or something else from the artist. Folks are going to choose free over any price if they can get the same thing.
Talk about timely articles. The day of the blackout the September issue of Wired was in my mailbox. In this months infop0rn, it describes a plan that Buckminster Fuller dreamed up 30 years ago to connect the world on the same grid. "Electric companies dismissed the notion as pie in the sky - and then proceeded to build such a grid." The article states that all the contries in the Western Hemisphere will be interconnected within the next ten years. About half the countries in the world are interconnected in some way already. Those that aren't connected or can't be is because of a geographical, industrial infrastructure, or politcal nature, ie Cuba, a few contries in Africa like Ethiopia and Sudan and Polynesia, Austrailia, and New Zealand.
The article says that this should smooth out market spikes when demand is high in one region it is almost certainly to be low in another. The US uses about 3.8E+18 kilowatt hours a year with about 71% of the energy used produced from fossil fuels. The US is also the largets importer of electricity, most likely the majority from Canada which produces about 58% from hydropower. France is the leading producer of electricity from nuclear, about 75%, and Brazil from hydro, about 86%.
1) Buy yourself a cabin in remote Montana. 2) Don't have a phone, cable, internet, bank account, or any subsciptions. 3) Pay for everything in cash. 4) Cancel all your credit cards.
Beyond that hope that with all the measures you are taking now (all which I do except the opt out number, thanks for the info!), you won't be randomly selected out the millions of people in the databases crackers rip off.
I am absolutely fed up with WalMart, "Redneck Sears", they were somewhat respectable when Sam was in charge. They at least sold Made in USA stuff. Then it went to where we can get it reasonably else it's foreign. Now it is probably hard to find anything in that store from USA. Also, here in Tallahassee, in two instances they closed one store and opened one about a mile away. Then they pay rent on that building to keep it vacant or put such restrictions on it that no one can use it. We have TWO (!) shopping centers here that are nearly empty because of this, then it drives out those other small strip shops because there is no magnet store. I wonder if anti trust laws can be applied to real estate. After all they are monopolizing a resource. And now they want to rent me my DVDs, maybe even sanitized. Unfortunately, all of my co workers just sing Wal Mart praises. Sorry Wal Mart, you get no dollars from me! Screw 'em.
Over and over our courts are issuing rulings against people who are trying to protect themselves from people who are trying to do them harm. There are precedents in the physical world. Shop owners are getting sued by criminals caught in traps or injured in some way and winning. I guess it was only a matter of time before the e-world was impacted by this. Pretty soon users will be getting sued for deleting SPAM!
I have participated in many rebates. I have had very good success. I have received approximately $500 in rebates. I use those free return address labels from charities on them to save time and ensure clarity. However, I have found some of Best Buy's adverts misleading. For instance, they post a sign in front of the Linksys 10/100 PCI NICs saying 9.95 each when you buy two with multiple rebates. They imply you need to buy two to get the rebates and that they are marketing the fact that you can get 2 for $19.95. They even print you two sets of rebate receipts and forms for each product. The fine print says 1 rebate per household. I still took a chance and the 37 cents for the stamp. DENIED, I got one rebate and none of the seconds. Same thing when they ran the same type of promo for D-Links. Maybe I am missing something but I don't consider myself too dumb.
I once had a Canon BJ-200e that one of my cats spilled hot chocolate right into the hopper for the paper. Into the tub it went for a good soak and rinse. A week of dry time, a new cartridge and it was printing again. The guy that clued me in to this told me they did this to monitors. I don't know about that but it worked for the printer.
I live in Leon County Florida and we have a similar system in place since the early 90's. This system will return the ballot to the voter if there are overmarks or something the machine cannot decipher. The systems keeps tabs of the all the votes and when they close the results are modemed to the courthouse. Results are usually 100% complete by the 11 O'clock news. This system is reliable, has a paper trail and assists the voters when they have erred. I have totally approved of this system since my first experience with it.
In an adjacent county where there is a significant number of under educated minorities they use the same system. There were problems with some votes and when questioned the county elections office put the ballots up for display so the press could see that the problems were voter related, either no vote, too many votes, or just plain mis marking.
My point is you can design and build the most fullproof voting system, but you cannot build and design goo voters!
By the way, in 2000 we had 100% accuracy of our votes in each recount, no need for magnifying glasses!
Abosolutely! Here is a commentary in the current issue of Scientific American that describes other important aspects of DeCSS (http://www.sciam.com/2000/0500issue/0500cyber.htm l). CSS is deliberately crippled technology. European DVD players cannot play American disks and vice versa. Folks in England usually have to wait months before movies are available in their formats, as well as there are Asian, African, Austrailian versions of CSS which cannot be played on other players. Not to mention US discs are cheaper and have more extras on them. Apparently there are players available in London shops that are hacked to play all versions of CSS just clicking a button on the remote. GO DeCSS!!!!
You can't stop people from having opinions. For instance, in the USA here there is a website I saw on a news show at the address www.godhatesfags.com. Now if I was gay I would find this site very offending, however, it is not directed at any one person. Now if you put something up that is slanderous or libelous towards someone, they have the right to take legal action, but it needs to be proved in a court of law. Even if you have your own server and connection you can get sued. I still think though in order to have true free speech, you have to take the good with the bad, hence the godhatesfags site. However, we also have in this country a law that says that if you are a public figure (politician, actor/actress, sports figure, etc.) you are open to anything that can be said or written about you. I think it is wrong if you target a business wrongly. I guess this is just some ramblings of a first amendment advocate!
A few years ago, a sports physiologist was doing a study using a temperature pill that NASA developed that measured core body temperature. He was comparing the pills results to the standard methods which required me to put a thermistor on a wire in two places, one of which was up my nose and down my throat. The other we won't mention. TMI!! I had to wear an antenna array harness that picked up the signals from this pill. Pretty cool being a part of the developement of this stuff. Anyway, it was I guess a precursor to these devices plus I got paid, had my body fat measured, got to watch a couple of Arnold movies and get some exercise!
Can't wait, it gave me the goosebumps watching it. I have read and reread the triology many times and have been waiting for this day. As they said the technology has finally come of age to do justice to the visions of Tolkein. That animated adventure made many years back was no good although the The Hobbit animated movie was good. The best part, they aren't trying to squeeze in the whole story in one 2 hour movie but in a true triology. May we not be disappointed as which happens many times (ie Dune!)
Well, then let's post some stuff about how they use it and the benefits they reap from it, I don't care about who won and who lost. Maybe if you quit watching all those dumb movies adn TV your head would clear and get rid of all the clutter!
Sun has shipped over 500 workstations to China that have disappeared into their defense industry complex to develope better nukes and such. Why did Clinton do this, can you say Johnny Haong. I just read this in a book called Red Dragon Rising. China is on the move to at least reclaim Taiwan after a civil war that ended 50 years ago. And the Clinton Administration refuses to acknowledge Taiwan's sovereignity, however Congress has passed resolutions that does. A little off topic but thought some might be interested.
That's why I try to spend my time working at work rather than reading slashdot all the time:)! I don't want to work any more than I have to. Maybe that is a fault, but I like to be in shape and healthy in body, mind and spirit. I don't see too many of those folks who spend 60 hours looking too healthy. 32 seems a little low. So in essence what this is saying for every hour you these people work they spend 1 hour screwing off! I don't believe it!!

I commented about this article in Wired yesterday and only got modded +1 and "interesting" in this article:
8 /1 6/1354229&mode=thread&tid=134&tid=162&tid= 99.
http://science.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/0
I felt it was at least "informative" and maybe deserved more mod points and maybe even qualifies as first post!!
