This will only serve to motivate some clever person with coming up with a broadband solution that doesn't require participation from the cable or telephone companies.
When are people going to learn that these kind of restrictions only hurt people who would not pirate anyway? Its only going to inconvience the vast majority of people who do not steal/pirate.
I don't understand why hollywood does NOT want their shows rebroadcast. Any exposure is good exposure for them, and will only increase the following of their so called entertainment programs.
Also, I will not buy any device that restricts me in any way. I only bought a DVD player because I was able to get one of those Apex machines.
In any case, its going to be cracked, and the digital copies will be on p2p anyway. Too bad...
With the support of 19 companies, this will get very interesting very fast. The only reason I own a DVD player is that I was able to get one of those APEX deals that are free of regions and macrovision and those other insane measures that take away from the consumer's ability to enjoy what they purchase.
I came across Inksaver.com from a buy.com mailout. Its a software package for under $30 that saves ink without sacrificing quality (so they claim). They have a free trial download, worth a look.
Much like Microsoft pushed MSN by giving out $400 gift cards at stores for a 3 year agreement, Microsoft could do the same and require a 2 year agreement to stay with whatever online gaming platform they are currently using, and give you the Xbox for 'free.'
I'm surprised they aren't using this srategy, because it would be the end of Nintendo and PS2 unless they did the same.
As a Nextel subscriber, I have nationwide, always on packet data on my phone, unmetered, any site, for only $10 a month. They've had this for a year, and its pretty good.
Why would anyone want AT&T's implementation, and why are they claming to be the first when they clearly aren't?
RealNetworks general manager Steve Banfield said that Windows Media Player was ``not the best product.''
That may be true, but Real player, the only software that I know of to instantly lock up a computer, is certainly not the best either. I'll take my chances with WMP thank you very much.
I read this article with great interest, as I am comfortable to know that something such as "Digital Rights Management" will never take away my personal freedoms. Its just not going to happen.
Remember when CDs came out and they said that they would be cheaper? Sounds like SDMI and DRM are just more ways to get the end consumer to pay out more money for music with watermarks and "big brother features" in it.
This kind of thing will never work. The problem is not piracy, its that people want to be able to obtain music for a low cost and they want high quality. Give me MP3 files that are encoded well, for a resonable price, and give it to me now, and I'll be the first to replace all the poor downloads I've received over napster with high quality encodings.
People may say that eMusic does this already? But they don't. They don't have the new songs on MP3, which is not viable to combat this problem.
Someone is going to do this right, and get rich. It won't be the RIAA.
and please, let SDMI die already. Its ironic that no one, even its creators know what it is.
As I am a little older and wiser now at 24, I wish I spent less time on computers and programming, and more time being outside and socializing with people my age. I'm still making up for it. Programming skills will get your child no where if they don't have personality or can't deal with social situations.
Gnucleus, an open source windows client has supported random ports for quite some time.

While wireless isn't there yet, it will be soon.

Gnucleus will surpass everything out there very shortly. Open source and a smart gnutella implementation. Its worth taking a look at.

The only thing it would cripple is their business model. So in a sense they aren't lying.

Its interesting to note that their per K charge is really high, somewhere in the order of 3 cents per kilobyte. Way too high.
How long until Apple sues slashdot for use of the Aqua theme?
This program is a new program called 'select', which works on the pay per click method, vs the pay per impression model.
They both do the same thing but with different pricing schemes.
You know, he didn't have to release anything at all. I get a little angry when people aren't greatful for what they have and can get.
This will be best for the company. Focus on what it does best.
If you are calling their processors what it does best, its scary to imagine how bad their other products are.
