Set up sudo so that it can run the packaging program and add the user to a few important groups, such as the one to set up the modem, make sure the CD rom can be mounted by the user and that is about all.
It would make the systems as usable though much safer.
As noted this is already in SpamAssassin called Teergrubing. There is a very long default on timeout for SMTP at approximately 20 minutes.
What spamassassin does by default is to take messages below 250k and scan them during delivery. i.e. before issuing a final accept. If it sees the message is spam of a high level it can be set to just send packets to keep the connection alive until the sender times out.
It takes very little overhead and provides the added bonus of being able to watch your mail server annoy spammers.:-)
As far as I know Google does not spider ftp archives. Therefore if you want people to be able to search for all the files offered (including inside word processing documents and PDFs) then you are better going with http.
I think that the ability for people to find the files using a search engine outweigh the other considerations if you are seeking to make the files public.
I think that this shows very clearly that there is a number of people who expect the US administration to either lie or prevaricate.
I do not think that this is based on doubts over science, just cynicism built on experience that governmental bodies frequently push false information.
The US is currently lead by someone who lied and cheated their way to power, GW certainly did not win an election. Why should it be any different in any other department?
In the UK there is only a small uptake of ADSL, many users have to pay for their time online 3p a minute. This and they get cut off every two hours.
My point in relation to having to download 100Mb is that this is just to use an email client. It is insane to have to change so much software to install an email client, the install corrupted menus and and caused numerous problems.
I pay for Ximian Express as a way of supporting Evolution. When Ximian first arrived you had to download 100Mb to get it started.
I did file a bug report on the conversion of the menus and the fact that on Red Hat 7.X Ximian killed the KDE menus when using a Gnome desktop.
The feedback I got was to create a link to another directory in/etc
This I do not think is suitable for a newbie. I think that it is also terrible to seriously damage the KDE menu structure in all versions of one of the biggest distributions.
I had seriously considered at the time to stop making payments and would have asked my girlfriend to stop too; however I saw the funding of Evolution as more important so we switched to Mozilla and left the payments running.
It is always difficult to look at percentages or trends when at the beginning of a trend.
Would you say after someone pushes the first domino at a domino topple "Well that is just one domino"?
Would you say it at the second to fall?
This is the beginning, there are few organisations that have tried using something other than windows on the desktop.
You are right that different orgainisations have different needs, for all will not have the need to move from what they have. Just as the Royal Bank of Scotland used Windows 3.1 until about 1998, it suited their needs.
What it does is give choice. Prove that there are other Operating Systems that can be used successfully.
I am not a zealot that wants to see everything relaced by Linux, I would like to see a little more choice and hope that this would force more use of open standards.:-)
The Scottish Police have already migrated to Star Office from Microsoft Office.
The Police in England are currently under going trials for Linux on the Desktop. It is expected that they will migrate 60,000 desktops to Linux in the next year.
In the UK it is not theft. It is breech of copyright.
In the UK it is against the law to distribute Copyright materials. You cannot be prosecuted for theft. It is a different crime from theft which deprives the owner of a tangible item. What you have is a possible sale. Everyone I know will buy the DVD if the film is worth watching.
I would suggest that overall it makes very little difference to their profits. 50% of profits made by the film companies is made by DVDs.
What you miss here is that there seems no financial benefit for the thief.
In selling stolen goods there is a benefit for the thief, hence creating the demand.

The 'diatribe' is unreadable for those with poor eyesight. A mixture of tiny fonts and a very poor contrast between foreground and background is exceedingly unhelpful.
It may look soulfull and moody but is useless for transferring information, or assisting those interact with the medium (which I thought was the aim of GUI's).
(And yes I know that all these things can be changed in the browser - just as all these things can be changed in theLinux GUIs!)
You might find a few helicopters about for taking coppers home when they are late for tea, certainly none for helping with the traffic.
The Police in the UK are in the process of closing a lot of Police stations as they were not making a profit (not commercially viable was the term used)

I would disagree with your comments on Zaurus useability.
Some of the things that I find very useful are as follows:
The ability to mount an nfs drive (the max I have had is 61Gb on my PDA;-)
The ability to log into any of my servers using ssh via an infrared connection to my mobile. I am not sure whether this can be done using a palm.
The Zaurus screen is higher definition than the palm and it should be possible to do a Solaris install via a serial connection once serial cables are available.
Web browsing is much better using opera and is very usable even via a mobile phone.
Compact flash ethernet for mobile connectivity around the office is fantastic:-)
At present I think for a laptop / portable replacement I am missing gpg and imap (though ssh, screen and pine works well)
On the trivial side I have got it playing videoCDs at about 3 frames a second.
The lock in comes when you are forced to use M$ servers. Once they get the lock on the servers and mass adoption; then a couple of tweeks to corrupt other platforms. We have seen it with Samba, Netscape.......
Not at all.

I have lived and worked in the UK for many years.
BT are a company I would never deal with in the future. They will lose your account details, they will lie to you and over charge you.
Two years ago they were charging £10,000 for a 128k leased line when their competitors were charging half that.
They at present run a monopoly and abuse their customers and competitors.

Microsoft has been proven to be a criminal organisation in the US. It is currently under investigation throughout Europe for criminal activity.
If this is not enough for your Morals, what is?
By working with MS products, easing the ability for companies to find engineers you are endorsing MS.
I myself cannot condone that.
Now Microsoft has an excuse to sell us the same software every two years :-)
Yes I would compare 5 escorts against 1 porsche.
They have a job to do of carting bits of data back and forwards. The five escorts can act together all carrying their data together.
In addition to this everyone knows that porsches have got small boots (trunks) and so they may be fast but have no carrying capacity (bus width?).
Cheers Xander
This reviewer has obviously not used a mac. The recently used programs menu has long been available on macs, as has the windows95 interface.
Still waiting for something innovative from M$........
