  1. Nautilus Install on Nautilus 0.5 PR2 Released · · Score: 4

The Nautilus install is similar to the Helix install and runns relatively smoothly (RH6.2)

RH7 is not yet supported. Total install is about 80Mb. It has support for online file space similar to WebDAV. Upload is earlier this evening was approx 128kb and integrates seemlessly into the file manager.

Overall interaction is not exactly zippy, however it does seem much more stable than the last incarnation.

This guy did none of this just damaged a couple of egos. It was a peaceful demonstration.

I disagree totally. Removing the watermark from music that you have purchased is not piracy. Unauthorised distribution of copyright music with or without the watermark is piracy; eating it, singing over it,,corrupting it, destroying it is not piracy.

If the RIAA have their way then removing the watermark will soon be illegal.

If I were producing SDMI, I would put in an easy and obvious copy-protection and a much better hidden one just to say 'yes' somewhere is the three minute song. The 'yes' would state that there was once encryption and if it ain't here now stop playing.

This system is designed to be used on propriatory hardware just like DVDs, with region encoding and other bells and whistles. The public accepted DVD players, why would they not accept similar restrictions in a music player if it does not hurt them too much?

The short affirmative would be much harder to find and it can be very small.

We started out by saying that $10,000 was not very much, exactly but enough to dupe everyone into looking for the wrong thing.

It was written by an ill-educated person with an absence of humour, desperately trying to appear PC. FYI I spent the last ten years working in the Far East and Sub Continent so have a fair experience of different cultures and what is racist - you Kwai Loi.

Most jokes rely upon differences between culture, such as the Scottish being renown for being mean with money. I am Scottish and I find those jokes funny - It does not mean that you do not like the person or culture, you are merely enjoying the difference between them.

That the Chinese have 5,000 years of history (only 4,600 more than the Americans {bless'em !}) provides a better background for the joke and acknowledges that the author cannot really be serious.

  18. He has missed the point on Napster totally on Information Doesn't Want To Be Free; People Want It · · Score: 2

There is an huge difference between sharing software and downloading copies of music that you have already paid for.

A good example of this is when CDs first came out many of the Dire Straits albums went back into the top 40 album chart as many people bought another copy on a different medium.

I do not agree with the Microsoft business model but at least they give you a 50% discount if you have already bought their software and want to upgrade.

If the music industry want to be honest about it why don't they just give you a licence for a year; after all that is how long music cassettes last before drop-out becomes intolerable.

I have used Napster to obtain copies of albums that I have purchased time and again. The law allows fair use in copying. I am allowed to copy my CDs to tape for my personal use etc. etc. I see no difference in obtaining that copy from a third party when the cassette or CD put out is of inferior quality.

Yes I do see the CD and DVD as an inferior product they are overly fragile and having been around for in excess of fifteen years I would expect these issues to have been addressed already.

Long before Napster was available I had all my music stored to hard drive to try to preserve it for the future. Hard drive space is now included when I budget for CD purchases. Napster is addressing problems with the digital medium's transience that the media companies did not deal with as it would reduce the profits from repeated purchases.

  19. Re:Problems on What Pitfalls Exist When Outsourcing Code? · · Score: 2

There are some very good minds in the subcontinent.

I would like to point out that when last working there I visited a clothing manufacturer. They had two lines of machines in a big warehouse. One one side there was a huge bank of electric sewing machines; on the other was a huge bank of pedal-powered sewing machines.

When (not if) the power, went down all the employees stood up and walked across to the machines on the other side of the room, sat down and carried on working.

This is not possible to do with computers, unless you have some very enthusiastic donkeys tied to a generator.

On a more serious note I have worked on a number of projects where we have outsourced and it has helped enormously where we seconded one of our engineers to the third party to join the coding team. This ensures that nothing is swept under the carpet and that documentation is done correctly.

While I am extremely happy at the release of a Notes client for Linux, and one that may evidently be customised and adapted I see IBM front-loading their efforts.

I would like to see more thought put into the work during and after the release.

For Example:- The downloadable Linux Domino Server does not provide instructions as to what commands to run to execute the server setup in the readme.

I have no problem reading and following documentation and I do not think that anyone would complain of bloating if they put the relevant text files with the download.

My point in short is that they would get much better market penetration if they set their documentation sites at the competant rather than expert.
