  1. Re:Wired had a bit about this last month on RFID-enabled Vehicles: Pinch My Ride · · Score: 1

This again is not quite accurate.

If you take the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) to any main dealer they are able to order you a key or have one electronically cut while you wait. I have done this on a couple of occasions with an ordinary Toyota.

The VIN of my current Volvo is on display in the windscreen (to allow for law enforcement agencies to easily check it matches the Index plates).

An unscrupulous employee of a main dealer can easily obtain a new set of keys. The keys therefore will never all have been 'accounted for'.

I know a lot of organisations that have blocked MSN search bots at their firewall.

The bot behaves very badly, frequently saturating the network.

Google has a great algorithm that tests total network bandwidth available and size of site and takes a directory a day or even just a page a day.

Once a range of IPs get into an admins firewall, they are not often removed. I see the same thing with IPs responsible for spam.

I am a Red Hat trainer working in the UK. There is no vendor lock-in.

This morning I have been teaching system V services. I have taught how to initialize these services on Red Hat, Debian, SuSE, Mandrake and Solaris.

This afternoon I am working my way through Squid. For Apache, Samba, NFS and all other services we recommend not using the GUI tools but vi (or emacs). All of these work the same way on all Linux as we deal with the application not the Distro. Where there are differences such as 'service httpd restart I also teach that you can use the full path to the script etc. etc.

The RHCE tests your abilities for applications - not RedHat thingys. Such as set up apache to do such and such, set up a mail server to receive mail. I tell my students that I do not care how they do it - use Postfix, sendmail or write a MTA that can do the job in the time allowed. We test the results not the method.

Red Hat do not modify their software so that it does not work with other software and we strongly believe in the GPL; hence our open sourcing GFS, the Global File System created by Sistina, allowing SuSE, Debian or anyone to use it to work with Red Hat systems.

In other news I thought I would also mention that I was very happy to see SuSE/Novell release the Ximian connector under an Open Source licence.

It has been shown in many tests before (including those featured on Slashdot) that at 128k ogg came out well ahead.

If we take the comparison to vehicles that has been shown elsewhere I would see the formats as follows:

AAC (Pogo stick that costs £100)
WMA (bicycle that costs £80 this year but will cost more next year and prevents you from using any other forms of transport)
FLAC (HUMVEE that runs on water, great but may be too large for your needs)
ogg (Mountain bike that is free, robust and does many tasks well)
mp3 (Mountain bike unsure of full costs, which may change without warning, does many tasks well, though is often beaten by ogg.)

I did not see any links in the article relating to using these tests for further comparisons.

If people really want to see which is the best pogo stick; however if you are looking to review different transport methods, just comparing pogo stick manufacturers are best is limiting :-)

And now for something completely different...

If you use someone else's code, of course you have to comply with their licence. If that is the GPL and you want to sell your code as well as their code I should think you would have to release it.

If you incorporated a piece of Windows's code into your application, do you not think that you would have to comply with Microsoft's licence???

Linux has had Token Ring support for a long time; this looks like more FUDing and Trolling.

Ext2 is a well written filesystem and does not require constant defragging like Microsoft's filesystems do. This is lack of knowledge on your own part.
