The collective IQ has dropped significantly. About now, the 2nd generation of slashdotters are making their exodus to other news sites - or - worse - the real world. By leaving the collective and making the ratio of clue decreases, leaving the bottom-rung stallmanite slashdrones to pick up the slack, so to speak. in addition the average age is now lower.

Perhaps we should charter a report on slashdot groupthink. if i were in college i'd do it.

Alternately, i accept the idea that it is indeed brainded friday.

  7. Re:However . . . on If This Had Been An Actual Emergency · · Score: 2
There's a very good reason the Emergency Broadcast System was not used..

The Emergency Broadcast system is no longer used!

In 1994, EBS was replaced with EAS. EAS has some pretty big differences.

    Stealing from the government's webpage:

Automatic Operation. The EAS digital system architecture allows broadcast stations, cable systems, participating satellite companies, and other services to send and receive emergency information quickly and automatically even if those facilities are unattended.
Redundancy. The EAS requires monitoring of at least two independent sources for emergency information. This insures that emergency information is received and delivered to viewers and listeners.
Less Intrusive. EAS tests are shorter and less obtrusive to viewers and listeners. Therefore, when people do hear or see the EAS messages, they will take them more seriously.
Second Language. Do you or someone you know watch Spanish-language programming? EAS digital messages can be automatically converted into any language used by the broadcast station or cable system.

Still, i do ponder why the EAS wasn't activated. I mean, Shrubya is all up for that cold-war secret agent man underground shit. I hear he's having "The button" installed in all rooms of the white house, and wired directly into his libido, just in case any of his vital fluids become inpure...

The first layoff was okay. It was a dot-com. The second layoff was seen coming from a mile away. Literally the 2nd day i was working there.

The third layoff was the straw. I was their best administrator, most certified individual and knew more about the systems than our "manager of unix systems", who was a technical manager - not a manager-manager. There were definately some political reasons behind it, and i know - for a fact - the manager was in on it, and was jealous that someone in their 20's knew more about the systems than someone in their 50's. Now that's rejection. I have more debt than most people in their 30's. And that one rejection will end up costing me more than i can calculate right now.

I could care less if i got into their cliques. I just wanted to work. I'm in it for the $. Well, last month, they took that away from me, based on - guess what - my age. Since im in my lower 20's, i have less experience, even though i have the same amount of years working with computers (as in real world, not playing on my pc at home) as their senior administrator. I think the reason was they promoted him to a manager of unix systems, and he didn't like that i quite literally knew more about the systems than he (for god sakes, he didn't even know what SSH, NIS, or SUDO were.)
