Another thing about "Recovery". Since Lion is going to be electronic distribution only.... some people are thinking that this browser mode might allow you to reinstall the OS somehow.... either by saving the Lion image to a USB Key or doing some sort of direct install.

I don't know about that one personally.... but I guess it is possible.

Actually... Apple did mention as part of "Find My Mac":

    http://www.macrumors.com/2011/06/07/os-x-lion-developer-preview-4-adds-find-my-mac/

    The idea has three purposes:

    1. Guest Access (as has been pointed out here)
    2. Recovery. If you hose up your HD it may be possible to troubleshoot using this browser. It actually boots from a "recovery partition"... so your actual OSX installation doesn't even need to work.
    3. Finding a stolen / lost machine. The idea is that if someone picks up your machine and tries to use it.... they might use this browser mode for a while allowing "Find my Mac" to phone home and show the coordinates of the machine.

That last one seems dodgy to me.... but that's the rumor going around the Mac sites.

Personally, I think Guest Access is a great idea. If I know I'm going to have people over to my house all evening (maybe to watch football)... I can leave a laptop around in this mode for anyone to use all evening... without fear that they are getting into my personal stuff.

One final note: This is only enabled after downloading the iCloud installer to go with Lion preview.... just in case anyone else out there is trying to figure out how to use it.

We were pissed.... but it doesn't appear that anything else was compromised (she didn't have anything sensitive in her Gmail account luckily).

Things really seem to be escalating on the 'net lately... from PS Network to Lockheed and now to Gmail. I really have to wonder if China is _actively_ participating at this point...

C++ certainly still has it's strong points over many other languages... especially when you need that cross section of good OO design and performance (like we do). There are many things I love using Python for but there a also a TON of times I need complete control over everything in order to get the most out of the machine I'm using.

I'm a fairly serious amateur photographer (took well over 10,000 photos last year all around the globe)... and here's what I do.

    1. Use a Mac with Time Machine and an external HD (if that's not an option I'm sure you can find a backup solution for windows that is similar). With Time Machine I always have at least one backup of every photo that hits my HD. Further, this also backs up my Lightroom database files, which if you are shooting in RAW are almost just as important!

    2. Backup offsite. This is another external HD that I bring home periodically and plug in and do a manual copy to it. You can keep it at work, at a friend's house, at a family member's house... wherever.

    3. Backup to the web. For me this is Flickr. I pay the yearly fee (don't remember what it is) and it gives you unlimited uploads and storage of the full size images. All of my finished and worked up photos go here. It's not a complete and perfect backup (like using a web backup service would give me because I can't upload the RAW files to Flickr).... but it gives a huge leg up on that "My house just burned down therefor I lost every photo" scenario.

I've never understood this bit myself. I stare at a backlit computer screen for upwards of 9 to 10 hours a day... how is a couple of hours of reading on an iPad going to do any worse?

I currently use my iPhone for HOURS every night. I read books... I surf the net... I play games... I check and write email. All of this on a tiny backlit screen that I have to hold fairly close to my face. The iPad is going to be a 1000 times better at all of those things.

I'm not alone in this either... I know tons of people with iPhones that use them constantly and I never hear anyone complain about the "backlit screen hurting my eyes"...

Further... I _want_ a backlit screen... so I can read it in places that don't have great light... like dark airplanes and subway tunnels. Like in bed with the lights off at night so my wife can sleep. And in a ton of other places that don't suit a reflective screen.

I'm convinced that this is a myth. I hope Mythbusters picks it up and runs with it sometime.
