My favorite statement like this has to be a bumper sticker my friend had on his car "Death to all Fanatics!". The bumper sticker in-and-of itself was humourous but this bumper sticker epitomized his approach to the world [Ultra-cynical and fucking brilliant...funny combination particularly when stupid people get involved:)]
I tend to check slashdot 20-30 times a day, during the work week, but I'd hardly call it an addiction. When I don't come to work, I don't check slashdot...I think it's directly related to how fucking bored I get at work.
Do you really think that the USA is the first/only country to use power as a measurement of success? That's only money is, the embodiment of power.
As nice as the view from your soap box might be, I would suggest getting off it and actually looking around at things. It's all about money and power and anyone who tries to tell you otherwise is probably selling you something. It's not just the USA, it's the entire world; it transcends economic systems and enters the realm of human nature. Natural selection programmed this in to us; might as well make the best of it.
Wouldn't virus writes have taken up that challenge out of spite?
You're acting as if the hackers ethos of the mid-90's is still in tact; it's not. The internet has become a business, as such there are nefarious individuals attempting to make money or proselytize some politcal agenda. It is no longer about attempting to prove that something can be done; maybe I'm wrong but I'd be willing to put money on the fact that if Mac or Linux had the marketshare both OS's would have just as many exploits.
That's not to say Microsoft is doing their job by any stretch of the imagination or that I think it's ok for these exploits to exist. I just want people to be a bit less absolute in their approach to these things....then again you resorted to calling me a fucking idiot for having a different perspective so maybe I'm asking too much.
I figured I might as well raise a critique that isn't going to be very slashdot friendly; the reason that the Windows operating systems are so vulnerable to attack has nothing to do with the coding microsoft has done. Before the massive influx of "You're a fucking idiot" posts get thrown up here, let me at least explain my perspective...then you can tar and feather me. Also, I'm dealing with the existence of exploits only, not how the company chooses to handle it. I don't have enough information on the different patching models out there to launch a valid critique.
I can not seem to find a website that seems both credible and contains information regarding the current state of the OS marketshare wars so I won't even bother to throw a number out there; it's safe to say that more people use windows then everything else combined though. If I am up to some nefarious activities and I have a desire to spread some code through an exploit, where am I going to look? Am I going to spend days and days scouring OS X looking for vulnerabilities? Am I going to attempt to disect the Linux Kernal looking for the perfect place to get my stack-smashing on? Or am I going to look through the Windows operating systems because a majority of people use them and as such I get the most bang for my buck?
Personally, because of the nature of statistics and probability, I find it very difficult to believe that Unix/Linux etc are any less vulnerable then the Windows Operating System. There's just less incentive to attempt to exploit the system; it's economics. The supply of potentially exploitable machines is small thus demand can not exceed the supply and people turn to looking for exploits on Windows.
I believe that something like 50% of Microsoft's revenue is generated from the Office Products and not their OS; kill the OS and they still have the office products generating huge revenue...
You pretty much said it here, but I don't think you made the point quite strong enough so I figured I'd get up on the ole soap box and give it the ole college try. The point of real note is the fact that solid water floats on liquid water. This is really really really really really rare from my understanding; moverover if this were not the case life WOULD NOT exist on earth as it does. Kinda strange how a tiny thing like solid water floating on liquid water makes such a big difference...
I could be completely misinformed, in which case I apologize but last time I checked Canada could sell its entire net worth to private investors and still be unable to pay off its medical bills. I heard this from a Canadian as well, as I said I could be misinformed. My point is, I dunno how great you think your system is but if that is true the ships sinking...and yes your neighbors to the south are also on a sinking ship but that's how these things go!:)
Thankfully I've had the sense not to bother looking at any of said pictures...personally I don't enjoy warping my fragile little mind anymore then it already is:)
The gun industry was yet again responible for countless murders throughout the United States! I mean they made the guns didn't they? It has to be there fault, let's blame them and sue them! Hurrah!
When in doubt, Lawerance Taylor can provide answers to these and other thought provoking questions! So with out further ado, "And that brings me to my next point kids, Don't Smoke Crack" - Waterboy.
Sums it up for me...damn crack smoking point modders, maybe Sam L. can go pulp fiction on them...
For Oscar copies of movies and pre-releases I personally don't see a problem with it; in fact it makes good business sense. If this shit gets dropped on to the consumer market though, I think I may just walk away from the entire movie industry. I believe companies have a right to protect intellectual property within reason; piracy should not be allowed to run rampant but the consumer also has a right to that properpty because we paid for it.
What really cracks me up though is the fact that if the MPAA intends to push this sort of DRM on consumers, it's only going to affect people in countries were piracy really isn't a big deal. The countries were piracy is really an issue will just ignore the MPAA because it's a meaningless organization.
Maybe it's a bit utopian of me but hopefully with the advent of digital technology and pioneers like Steve Rodriguez [yeah the Spy Kid movies were lame but the guy consistently has said I'm going to make X movie for Y dollars in Z time and everyone tells him it's impossible...and he pulls it off, and Sin City was great film-noir despite the fact that it was digital; in my mind the ambiance was stunning] we'll see a shift towards more creative freedom, where people have the balls to tell SAG, the Directors Guild folks and the MPAA to go suck it.
Uh, I'm not sure why you decided to reference A Scanner Darkly in relation to either that Narnia stuff nor Star Wars...A Scanner Darkly is hardly science fiction as it is thought of by society at large and has absolutely no potential for any sort of franchise. PKD [Philip K. Dick] has a much different understanding of science fiction then most people, he said that science fiction was a story that took place in a universe that was not our own but could be; thus his work is very unique but almost never translates properly to the big screen [by properly I mean holds to the artistic vision of the novel, not whether it is good or entertaining but anyone who has read Minority Report, Total Recall (or whatever the book was called) or Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (Bladerunner) can tell you that PKD's written stories are much different then what you see on the big screen].
Frankly, I'm surprised that A Scanner Darkly is being made in to the movie...the book itself uses a 1984ish backdrop to tell a story about the danger of drug use. The fact that it's a fascist government is in control does not really play all that important a role in the story; the end of the book pretty much sums this up when Dick relates his own experience with drug use and drug addicition as well as though of many of his associates and many of the problems that came from it. The story isn't supposed to be an apocolyptic vision of the future; rather it is meant to be an explortory journey in to the counterculture movements obsession with mind altering drugs as a means of self-discovery and how flawed this idea really is, at least from PKD's own experience. [The last chapter of the book is an afterword from the author in his own words talking about drug addiction...I'm not just making this up...for once]
C'mon now I'm posting on slashdot...that doesn't mean my posts have to be applicable in any way nor does it mean that they should add to the discussion...it's posting for the sake of posting and nothing else:)
I hate to rain on your parade here but last time I checked our IQ's are actually getting better despite modern media. I'd look the article up to validate my point but this is slashdot so "because I said so" will suffice:)
The stuff that I've read seems to suggest that they have about 90% of the code written to make the thing backwards compatible but they are not sure whether that last 10% is going to get done by release. Apparently it's supposed to be the trickiest part, I think if it gets done they'll include it but I doubt they're going to bust their budget making it backwards compatible. I am a loser and have already set aside money for my Xbox360...I'm going to buy one so I might as well just accept it and move on:)
And if I can hurt those feelings, I think I've had a pretty good day. As far as I'm concerned the Simpson family is waisting my precious oxygen, as is the hilton family, the ritche family, the reid family (I had the misfortune of going to college with Tara's younger sister...imagine Tara fat and ugly) and I could continue this list on ad naseum but I shall refrain from trolling anymore than I already have this morning...sorta like crack got get me some to start the day!

Yeah so I most certainly remember reading this article FOUR YEARS AGO. Thanks for the new news!
Thank you much for clarifying, as I suspected I was grossly uninformed...what's new? :)
According to this article I was incorrect in my assumption
Wouldn't virus writes have taken up that challenge out of spite?

Wow your girlfriend is a star wars geek, that sucks man...personally I think I'd shoot myself.
Mmmmmmmm beer.......
Only Star Wars Fans make stupid signatures like that! Fuck that means I'm a Sith...double fuck I made a star wars geek comment!
Hmmmmm donuts.....
