The more bombs you drop, the more likely you are to hit something. Sure, they're unguided, but they are inexpensive and there are lots and lots and lots of them. This is especially true on the net. People are biting. They're the same people who scout the papers for coupons and better deals. Not every piece of spam is a penile enlargement ad. Granted, I dump spam as soon as I get it, but it'd be naive to think there aren't at least some good deals out there, and there are people actively searching for those deals. I have to agree CmdrTaco... Somebody is buying. It just isn't you.
I'm 10/10 on rejections ^__^ One wonders where they get this news in place of the real news.
"let's post a story on that year and half old sub movie, U571..." "Nah... I want a story on the anniversery of Air Conditioning!" "I'm kinda dry on stories over here...Was thinking we could repost that one on CD maximum speeds." "No! U571!" "Dammit! I was talking first!" "Boys, boys, boys... Don't fight. We can print them ALL!" "Hurray!"
...Why they'd go through all the trouble to make a counter-rotating assembly when they realistically could stregthen the disks. But personally, I think they'll stop using CDs before either happens. Not cost effective. I like 2Gb as much as the next guy, but these hyper drives are only going to see the light of day (that's IF they see the light of day) in very high end corperate environments.
So who, besides me, obviously, will get the Redundant/Troll/Flamebait/Overrated for posting this this story? Chris? Oh yeah, yet another good example why authors don't get modded. CUZ THEY'D BE OUT ON THEIR ASS.
"Moderators who are ranked poorly will cease to be eligible for moderator access in the future."
Oh, how I wish we could change "moderators" to "authors". I suspect half of slashdots staff would cease to exist with stories like these... Karma, karma everywhere and not a bite to eat...
What is it about VCDs on slashdot that seem so... so... Antiquated? Forgive me for stepping on another deligtfully informing article (ie; wasted space) and say this is a bit behind the times? And what is a VCD going to do that a VCR can't? Sure it's cheap, but unless you're somewhere in Asia, VCDs have gone the way of Betamax. And then you'd actually either have to buy the player or a PC to read it. If you buy the player, that's more out of pocket. if you use the PC, you might as well use CDRs.
Whoohooo... News for nerds, stuff that matters... I'm all over that action, aren't you?
Lets get something strait- It's homefield advantage that's killing the XBox, not hardware. I think we can all agree that Japan is the undisputed gaming captal of the world and it just so happens both Sony and Nintendo live there. With few exceptions, the Japanese is very hard for US companies to penetrate effectively. It's literally hostile territory in terms of importation and marketing, where the US is a lot more leanient in those areas, despite what you may hear. The fuss made over a small batch of XBox's scatching game DVDs is enough proof of that.
The biggest issue is the games, in my opinion. Not that they are bad (exceptions noted), just that I don't consider them nessisarily console games since the XBox seems to be leaning more toward American style PC games. Beyond Sega and one or two other popular developers, there's not a whole lot from the Japanese side of things. It feels more like a PC than a console now. If the Xbox wants penetration, it's machine needs to feel like a console and the Japanese have shaped a lot of what that feels is for just over 20 years. Those developers need to be a major presence to compete against the homefiled players.
Of course, MS seems very adept at viral infection of markets. Gates and company tend to have a very long view of their ultimate goals.
Everybody knows space aliens love prime numbers. Especially Space Alien hackers. Which must be who these security experts are protecting against since most people here (including myself) seem to have only the vaguest notion of who Reimann Zeta is. (wink)
Seriously, encryption is my best guess, but it sounds like another one of those "that's what computers are for" deals. I could be wrong. Maybe. Not likely, but it is an infintesimal possibility.

Well, "Hack the Planet" immedietly slashes any credibility you had by 3D6. Second, you're right. Your handle doesn't mean anything. Third, anybody can claim anything through "serious evidence" and "credible sources". Especially on the net. Back it up. Put up or shut up.
Actually, credit card fraud, warez and their associate porn banners make a tidy revenue. Hacking is business. Illegle (sans the porn) and pretty stupid, but business none the less.
So when do we get the anniversery story on the toaster? The refrigerator? The vacuume cleaner? Oh, I know! Indoor plumbing! That's gotta be on par with air conditioning, right?
Ah, but they are going after the home user in a fasion. All this patent BS that these large companies are going through means they'll have shell out money and, in some way, it'll be passed down to the consumer, probably in the form of a few dollars price increase. No, sending a bill directly to the home user isn't going to accomplish much. They're going to laugh and say "yeah, right!" But remeber how the recording industry gets a piece of the action for every CDR/CDRW and MD sold? Damn well betcha the consumer is paying for it. Not that I think they'll be able to enforce it after all these years. What do you want to bet that if they had charged for it's use back in the day, we wouldn't be using.jpg now? Kinda underhanded, personally.
"With this acquisition, Symantec will offer customers the most comprehensive, proactive early warning system across the broadest range of threats."
I take it that this comprehensive, proactive early warning system offers protection against the broadest range of threats, including hostile air strikes, early warning Surface to Air Missile detection, drive by shootings, nuclear tipped ICBMs and the occasional Gene Simons appearance on TV...? Come to think of it, I could use a product like that. Thanks Symantec!
In related news, Apple reports a slide in third quarter earnings according to this Yahoo release. A connection perhapse? I'd have submitted this as an actual/. story if I thought it had a snowballs chance in hell of seing the light of day, but I'm 10 for 10 on rejections; Why break the streak now, right?
You are right.. It's tough to fault em for making such a damn good movie. I remember back when I thought D&D the movie was going to be "it". Nope. Not even close. One version will be good enough for me though... I'll just wait until the new cut is slashdotted before making a final decision;)
Yes, it's all Mr. gates fault. The lack of construction games, war, plagues, famine and the ever-so-popular silent collapse of a neutron star into a black hole at the galactic core.

They could build stronger CDs. Just a thought.
You know it's a dup. I know it's a dup. So WHY the fuck did you put it up? Was it so good you just had to print another?

If you can patent .jpg's and hyperlinks, Lord only knows the fun you could have by patenting this little corner of the patent universe...
