One of the Slashdot culture's strengths is that posts are immutable - they cannot be edited or deleted. It nurtures this culture where people think a bit before hitting "Submit" (I know, I know, I must be new here). Also who gets to distinguish "obvious" troll posts? Downmodding to oblivion (-1) is the correct course of action.
The only exception to these immutable posts that I'm aware of was several years ago and involved the church of scientology.
Facebook might not be the best example here as you are not the customer merely a part of the product. You have no contract with them, and they have absolutely no obligation to you. FB can cancel your account at any time for no reason and you would have no legal recourse.
That's a rather bold description over such a stupid issue. Do you think that ship builders who aren't starting to build their hulls out of titanium screen doors are also luddites?
Holy crap you're serious! It's little wonder then why Americans are so dependent on coffee, antidepressants and psychologists. I don't see how anyone can maintain a healthy work/life balance with those sorts of demands unless their working day is very short or long weekends are the norm.
Where I live all full time workers are entitled to four weeks annual leave, with some employers giving their staff a fifth week. Plus a certain number of days sick leave, but it's considered fraudulent to take those unless you're actually sick. Not unreasonable I think.
Anything that drives up demand for solar panels should result in a ramp up in supply and a drop in price so I can get my home solar installation more quickly.
The problem is not that apps can be installed outside of a walled garden, which is a normal part of operating an Android device; the problem is that malicious software exists, and has done so for as long as long as computers have been affordable.
Some of the comments here suggest an attitude that wants to marginalise side-loading, as if it were the software equivalent of walking down a dark alley and accepting sweeties from a man in a trenchcoat lurking in the shadows. That is very dishonest and short-sighted view that if carried out has but one logical conclusion - a car with the hood welded shut. If people want that sort of nonsense they may as well give up and buy an iPhone.
So... any app not sanctioned enough by Google to appear on their Play Store is automatically shady and pirated huh?
What an amazing world view you must have. I hope you never install software on your PC that is not first approved by Microsoft Corporation, or eat food that doesn't come from the local supermarket.
Not necessarily. AMD lose out in anything requiring high FPU performance ever since the brain-dead Bulldozer design but for integer intensive work AMD opterons with their large number of cores are still the better option.
It would be good to have a light source that gives a full, even spectrum again.
As others have commented here, I also wonder about the longevity. I believe that current incandescent bulbs fail mostly as a result of heat. These new bulbs, if they do run cooler would need to be designed with a completely different impedance model, since traditional incandescent bulbs run a delicate balance using heat and the resulting impedance to maintain some kind of equilibrium. This is why they most often fail immediately after being switched on - the bulb is cool (low resistance) so for a brief moment there is a large amount of current flowing through the filament before it heats up enough to reduce the current to a safer level. If that spike happens to coincide with a peak of the AC waveform then the filament, already weakened by many heating/cooling cycles, stands a good chance of burning out.
In order to use some of the more interesting features of BASIC on the C64 you had to POKE to and PEEK from very specific memory locations.
I strongly disagree.

Yes, I agree it would be interesting to model exactly what would happen to an F-14 in a martian atmosphere and gravity.

Maybe?
The good honest hayseed who camps out for 2 weeks using up 4 years of vacation time
4.... years vacation time?
Do you live in China?
Fix its reputation, by first acknowledging that there are problems and then resolving to fix them in consultation with the community.
You have just done this.
Thank you.
Wow.
I sincerely hope you never break an arm, pop a hip, or contract an infection from a cut.
Not all sicknesses are life threatening but can seriously degrade your quality of life.
Linux package managers are well overdue for redesign.
Perhaps so, but there's nothing on any other mainstream operating system that can compare in terms of software management.
And no, the OSX and Windows App Stores don't come remotely close.
Mod parent up.
UEFI and its inbred cousin, Secure Boot, are a scam to give Microsoft Corporation the final say in what you can and cannot boot on your computer.

This is true, but not particularly helpful.

... or someone who knows something about Facebook that you don't.
Some of us prefer to use FOSS repositories such as F-Droid.
People love false dichotomies.
How dare Apple call something that is unduly burdensome and not necessary, "unduly burdensome and not necessary".

Why only cloud-based data centers? Are they not reliable enough for actual data centers?
A similar method was reported here back in 2002.

How can Facebook, a social media website, have any say in the future of a sound card company?
Sounds rather similar to OpenOffice vs OpenOffice.org
I'm tired of living in a country where idiots continually respond to gun violence by saying "We need more guns."
Are you also tired of living in a country where idiots continually respond to muslim violence by saying "We need more muslims"?
