"If they know so much about it, how come they still have it?"
How is this question logical? Is knowing one is living in a certain condition equal to the ability to extricate oneself? So many still live in poverty because it is difficult, as a third-world citizen, to pull oneself up. Moving to a first-world nation is an obvious solution but can take years and for some is literally impossible due to government restrictions or the sheer cost.
"It makes just as much sense to say that, never having seen what lies beyond poverty and suffering, they probably aren't nearly as motivated to work hard to get there."
They do. They have TV and american and european imported shows to watch. They see the lifestyles lived by the people on TV and assume that's how it is to live in the US.
I'll agree that there is probably more motivation for someone who lives in a third-world country to better themselves than someone who lives in a first-world country. They have more to gain, and probably know more about how poverty and suffering than the average american But I don't know if you can accurately say that American works are in general incompetent and unmotivated.
"I made no such claim. What I said was that the original poster's claim that Americans were not incompetent or unmotivated was not necessarily true. I know lots of unmotivated American employees. I also know a fair number of incompetent ones. Having taken physics and mathematics courses with a number of architectural, civil, and materials engineers I can tell you that I have less confidence than ever when driving across bridges. If you don't think many Americans are incompetent and unmotivated you are just not paying attention."
It seemed obvious to me that the OP was not claiming that there are NO incompetent or unmotivated workers in america. He was making a generalization about the average american worker, in comparison to those of other nations, and I would agree. In general, american workers are not unmotivated or incompetent. The fact that SOME are doesn't mean that all are, or even most.
gallows are too good for him. I say we cut off his arms and legs and slowly lower him into a tank full of leeches. and pirahnas. with rocket launchers strapped to their heads.
Reasonable grounds to detain him are not the same as reasonable grounds to cuff the main and leave him cuffed in front of other people in the store. This makes him look like a criminal regardless of the fact that he is merely a suspect, and only barely so.
so, did you miss the part of the story where he came in to PAY THAT INSTALLATION FEE and they accused him of using counterfeit cash? You can't have someone arrested for not paying a fee that you refuse to take payment for. The man was arrested over the counterfeit cash suspicion, which turned out to be groundless.
Reading the OP, it seems to me that was the point of his article. In fact, he specifically poses the question of whether admins can really trust MAPS to blacklist effectively.
I guess the problem is that without clinical trials, preferably with appropriate blinds, it's hard not to assume that the few anecdotal accounts we have of his methods working aren't simply placebo effect. Anyone know of any actual studies on these techniques?
This kind of "cracking" is impossible to prevent, if the software runs on a standard PC. And even if that were somehow secured, the analog hole would still exist.
Unstable has newer packages available. And if you don't mind compiling and installing yourself, you can still use basically any linux software that isn't already included.
...and? What relevance does whether the game is offline or online have? You should have done more investigation into Steam before purchasing the game if you didn't know this could happen.
Valve is not the first game company to have service outages, nor will it be the last, and I have yet to see a single one that offers compensation to their users in such an instance.

so, someone who counters an OP with a bunch of well-considered points is a troll now? Yep, we're on slashdot alright.
And Debian doesn't "just work"? My 5 debian boxes all seem to "just work" "just fine".

naturally, as a scared 18 year old clerk, the logical thing to do in such a situation is accuse the person scaring you of passing counterfeit bills.
Reasonable grounds to detain him are not the same as reasonable grounds to cuff the main and leave him cuffed in front of other people in the store. This makes him look like a criminal regardless of the fact that he is merely a suspect, and only barely so.
my windows systems dont crash very often, either. But the point is that they crash more often than my six debian boxes put together.

According to the article, it's only legal if you also attach a printed notice stating "Copyright Frist Post 2005".

That Bates guy was discredited a long time ago... his methods were pretty poor.

It's worth keeping in mind that this is the first Trek since TOS that is being cancelled without another Trek series launching.
I believe previous stories I read pegged it at around 60M...

Actually, I can drive stick no problem. I was just going for the lowest common denominator :)

How is it that most non-retarded humans can grasp the idea of a brake pedal AND a gas pedal, but your father can't handle two mouse buttons? ;)
I have never, ever heard of a game company doing this, even the ones who supposedly provide a continuous online experience like MMORPG's.

Where exactly is this "informatics law" inscribed in US legislation?
His entire point was obvious to me. Why would anyone pay for something they can get for free?
