...why not just use XP or 2K? They run Windows apps better than Lindows, and sure seems just as stable as Linux... Not to mention the better hardware and software support.
You missed the point, you uneducated piece of crap.
If we were comparing system performance, we wouldn't necessarily use DDR for both.
However, since we're comparing CPU VS CPU (NOT SYSTEM VS SYSTEM), they try and keep all the other specs similar.
It's to see how the Athlon compares to the P4; not how an Athlon computer compares to a P4 computer.
Just the fact that this post got modded up so high shows how totally uneducated in these matters the Slashdot crowd is; maybe you should go back to playing with your kernal, instead of ranting about something you have no authority with?
We best get at the job of obliterating the 200 Koolance cases that exist on earth, because after all, they were only created by the Demon Realm to destroy us with their fish tank pump, right?
What a waste of energy. I've got to go do the dishes and take a bath, right before I drive 45 minutes to and from work in my internal combustion engine vehicle.
But first I have to have lunch. I've got a few pounds of waste left to produce in my day, not to mention all the recyclable items I have to throw in the garbage before I go to bed for the night.
After all, I can have a restful slumber knowing that me and my peers are the perfect humans for picking on some geeks and their water cooled computers.
Umm... the chances of a keygen working online, after being generated by one of the few pirates who would try it online, is, ah, nearly astronomical?
In the even such an unlikely thing occured the person would probably take the game back. One or two lost customers is a good tradeoff for not having a robust support system in place for used keys...
Apparently most of you haven't tried DOD for Half-Life...
If you had, you'd see that the company contracted on to create the multiplayer (practically as an afterthough) pretty much took all the cash they could muster and spent it on copying and improving DOD as much as possible.
At this point, as far as I can see, DOD still has better gameplay as Wolf does.
DOD is at the maturity level CS was at around beta 6. And though it has less players, it's arguably more original and fun than CS. Most people who try it get addicted very quickly, as long as they're burnt out by CS. If you're still a newbie to CS and haven't clocked two years of it, maybe DOD won't turn you on as much.
In short, the hotter a semiconducter is, the shorter its lifespan will be.
Generall this means it'll last 10 years instead of 50, but... I've seen a modern cpu fail here and there after a few years of use.
Also, the CPU generates much of the heat in the machine, so you'll be killing your other components as well with the high ambient temp of the case (unless your problem is less one of ventilation and more of having a horrible hsf combo).
Not to be rude, but what you just wrote SPEWS "I actually don't have a clue what I'm talking about." In fact, it reads like you didn't talk to a single person who knew anything about anything but "that slow thing makes less noise than that fast thing."
Apparently posting on Slashdot didn't get you the best hardware advice, so I'd suggesting reading up and then posting at any of the 50 good hardware sites out there (hardocp, techreport, amdmb, hardwareextreme, tom's forum, etc, etc) before you go on another buying expedition.
Now, that said, several of your choices were wise ones. Depending on when you bought this thing, some were questionable.
That is the point. This news post is apprently based on the fact that a new video disputes Tom's results.
If Hemos and the rest of you had actually WATCHED the video, you'd see that they come to the same conclusion; If you remove the heatsink, the chip will overhead very quickly.
In Tom's case, it destroys itself in just a few short seconds after the heatsink is removed and Windows crashes.
In this new video, the system shuts down automatically when it reaches critical temperature, a few seconds after the heatsink being removed.
These are not conflicting results.
The misunderstanding came from the person who submitted the new video. They compared the time an Athlon survived with only a heatsink (9m), versus Toms time WITHOUT a heatsink (a few seconds).
"The Report of My Thermal Death Have Been" is improper english.
And I guess my little "anyore" was a bit too swift for some of you to catch. Sorry, I guess some Linux distros don't come with sarcastic humor built in...
...finally getting those damn things in our shoe soles. Charge while you walk!
Good try, but you're TOTALLY WRONG.
Been reading too much Tom's Hardware Misinformation Guide?
This gets a 2 and Offtopic?
*DOWN WITH SLASHDOT MODS*
Go back to RUSSIA, YOU MODS!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's the most informative post here. A lot better than the other garbarge you mod up.
Mod me down, FOR AMERICA!!!!!!!
Yeah, that's pretty damned ingenius...
...why not just use XP or 2K? They run Windows apps better than Lindows, and sure seems just as stable as Linux... Not to mention the better hardware and software support.
Right?

You guys are fucking sick in the head. Killing Somolians isn't good either, but you don't see anyone saying "it served those terrorist ragheads good".
It's "There're", not "There's". There's would be There is. ;)
:)
But you're correct, he is pretty retarded
Come come people, out of any crowd online, I'd expect the slashdot folks to be on the up and up about Miranda and Licq.
If you use Linux, use Licq or Miranda and WINE. If you use Windows, use Miranda.
Simple as that!
oops, miranda is at miranda-icq.sf.net
Clever.

...but this new video shows the same results as the TH video! After about 2 seconds with the heatsink off, ths system SHUTS DOWN.
Only when the heatsink is left on, but the fan power is disconnected, does it last 9 minutes.
The thing doesn't last 9 minutes with the heatsink off, crikies....
Do we speak english here at Slashdot anyore?
I am not less perfect than Lor

I think I need someone to explain the phenomenon of the MONEY SHOES to me.
That's right. You're all unfaithful and unworthy if for one moment you called it Mario Cart. There is no such game as "Mario Cart".
You disgrace the name of our Lord and savior Mario Kart by slandering its name in such a haphazard fashion.
