I'd rather trust a theory that has factual evidence backing it up than the belief of myths based soley on the writings of corrupt power hungry religious factions set upon control over the masses via fear.
Actually, we have no idea if that is the truth or not yet. True, just because it was posted by a website does not make it so, but then again, just because MS denys it does not make it untrue. I, for one, think the truth is somewhere in between (because, it all honesty, Smarthouse said that "up to 60%" was to be re-written, and if you have any basic math skills at all, you would realize that could mean anywhere between 1% and 60%. Only the future will tell.
Funnily enough, I am one of that "tiny" amount (LOL) of OS/2 users, and it seems at the time, all my other geek friends used it too. It most certainly had NO problems running any windows or DOS software we tried on it... that is, until MS started changing stuff with the singular intent of breaking OS/2 compatability. I think this was the start of MS's undoing. They were so intent on creating a moving target so that nobody can reverse engineer compatablility with their software (and still do to this day), that it has gotten the better of them, and they can't clean up the mire and muck that they themselves created.
Microsoft has NEVER turned out a product that could kill competition. Your so called "revolutionary" '95 came after OS/2, and OS/2 did everything '95 could do, plus some, and did it all better. It's not the product, and it's not competition on merit, it's all market manipulation by sometimes quite questionable means.
"I swear I remember reading an article a couple of years ago where Allchin (sp?) commented that Vista was a from-scratch complete re-write of the OS, that they didn't port anything over. Of course I could be mistaken, but it just sounds really weird to remember that, and now the talk of a major re-write."
No problem with the fact that you heard that, but my problem comes in thinking that you actually believed it. Stay away from the Kool-aid.
"Once again, we have the Slashdot spin to deal with:
Up to 60% of the code in the new consumer version of Microsoft new Vista operating system is set to be rewritten as the Company "scrambles" to fix internal problems, according to this report."
Guess you didn't read the article, because that is a direct quote from it, not "Slasdot spin".
How the hell did the parent get modded insightful? He obviously didn't even read the article! How can "Microsoft has also admitted that it has major problems in it's Windows division and has has immediatly initiated a total restructure of the division' be spun to mean anything other than what it says?
I think that poll is more representative of the demographic that wants to use faq/walkthrus and cheats to blast through their warez collection as quickly as possible.:/
I have a gaming friend that just turned 21. I'm 41. He always wants to show me some nifty new code, then wonders why I'm not falling all over it like he is. It's easy. I just want to enjoy the whole game, not play the Readers Digest condensed version of it.
It sounds way too much like you have to sneak and hide it to do it... like it's dirty or something. Which begs the question of why you married somebody who didn't really know who you are (or wouldn't like who you really are)? Sounds like you need to clear some air, seriously.
At the moment, my husband is in his computer room (yes, we have his and hers computer rooms) playing (and will be till 1 or 2am). I'm getting ready to hit the xbox for an hour or so before bed. It's a match made in heaven:).
Married does not automatically mean 2 incomes. We live quite comfortably (though we're far from rich) on one, and we BOTH prefer it that way. I did have a job for a couple of months recently, and heard from close friends that my husband did NOT like me working. He wouldn't tell me straight up, because he wanted to be supportive of what I wanted to do.
I have a 7yr old, I choose an alternate route though (maybe it's because I'm home during the day... housewife), I spend most of the time the little one is at school playing (lately anyway) GTA SA. When I hear the bus drive down the street, that's my signal to get the disk out of the xbox and return it to it's hiding place in my room hehe. I'm always watching the clock as the time gets close, just to try and finish one more mission.
" Like anyone didn't expect this. Are they too busy with Organimi or whatever? Xbox 360? Their URGE music store?
Well, these are typically different divisions and Microsoft is rather a large corporation."
I would think that, as large as MS is, and with as much money as they have, that they should be able to make better products than they do. I would also be wrong in thinking that, as they have been known to be spread too thin on things on occasion (making a service pack for XP delays their new OS for how long? Years?). Maybe they should consider cutting back on some of those different divisions, and figure out where THEY want to go today, cause they clearly don't seem to be getting anywhere very fast.
"I really wonder if it has something to do with thwarting pirates. After, most pirates are going to want to pirate the Ultimate edition, not the Starter or the basic home. But if they build something into the operating system that makes the whole OS harder to pirate."
I have an idea.. quick, somebody, call MS, tell them to protect themselves from piracy by using Starforce copy protection!! Yeah, that's the ticket!;)
"The problem is frequently not a lack of admin competency, but a lack of corporate willingness to do what IT says. CEO goes to IT, says, "Mister IT Man! It hurts when I do this!" IT guy says "Well, don't do that" and CEO says "What, are you fucking crazy? I want to play my ActiveX games! I like clicking on everything that comes into my inbox! Go fuck yourself!" And so, the security never improves."
Man!! This is just too true! I know an admin, who wanted every machine in the building behind the firewall (duh), but one of the upper muckity mucks wanted one machine to be outside of the firewalled network (forget why.. some stupid reason, like to make it more easily accessable for someboy.. yeah.. no shit, but he was "the man" so it was so). Then, they get the call from the FBI to say they are hosting a phishing site, which is when they found that server had been compromised. Dumb shit. Then again, that company has had dumb shits at the helm for a long time now.
If he was the least bit concerned with press visits, I think he might, at the very least, comb his hair. This is OBVIOUSLY not the case though.
Dude, that's not "study" food, that's "staying in the bathroom all night with the runs" food.
Yuk.

You might try reading past the first half of the first paragraph.
Nice review. Thank you! In fact, I will have Oblivion this weekend and I'm really looking forward to starting my experience. :)
"I've yet to find a western RPG that had any motivation for my character to leave the first town."
Well then you simply didn't play very much of Morrowind, did you?
Owned!

Hey, look guys, it's a sheeple. ^^^^^
Glad you're happy with what they wanna stick up your backside, but I know there are lots of people not so happy with their definition of innovation.

Most of the new stuff in '95 was in OS/2 first.

Dang. Should have responded to the last remark.. so will redo my response...

Not if your social life is defined by the time spent in
:D
A) MMO
B) Playing D&D pen and paper
C) watching Battlestar Galactica with friends
D) All of the above

MMO is NOT hardcore. Sorry to burst your bubble. Online is not more hardcore, it's just more social.
