Poof MS is gone.. never existed. Now, if there is something still sitting on your desk that resembles a pc, it's probably loaded with something much better than what MS has strangled the industry with for the last decade plus. Since the IT industry was not held back by their shenanagins, there is a very high chance that some form of Unix flourished and moved forward.

It would seem to me, that having a *choice* to do something that _other_ system does would be a Good Thing(tm) in this case. If you don't want it on your system, just don't install it. Choice is good.. ala the ability to install what you want rather than what some corp deems you must. I'm all for choice, but it's certainly not your place to be telling me, or anybody else, what they should, or should not desire on their system.

It's not even a fair fight, because it's one that absolutely impossible for them to win... kinda like trying to keep people from snagging a picture off the 'net. And this is the simplest solution to what problem, specifically (I'm guessing ripping cd's, but you mentioned monitors so you confused me)? As much as I love Linux, it too, will have the same copy protection brought to it, and require the same 'approved' monitors that Vista will in order to watch protected content. Sure, cracks will appear that will allow viewing of content.. among other methods of aquiring said content, but I'm not discussing pirate activities as those same methods will also be available to Windows users, probably before it's available to us, so there's no benefit gained. Simply stated, in order to view protected content *legitimately* in Linux, it will have to support DRM, and all required hardware in order to operate correctly. Hell, most distros still require you to aquire mp3 codecs from a 3rd party due to licensing issues. I promise you won't see ways to get around DRM and such in out of the box installs.

Hmm, how strange it is, then, that Debian has had XOrg packages since July, and they are working fine, if the Ubuntu crew are doing all the work and it is still broken there. When Xorg went into Sid, it worked and didn't break anything that I saw, and it certainly is not broken atm.

I could really give a flying fuck how much it costs, but it's not a $20 item. The main point of people problem is that the unit without the hd creates a situation where the game devs can not create the games on the same level as they could if there was a hd in every unit. The "core" unit should have been, console, wired controller, hd, $340ish price. Either that, or tell the game devs that if their game needs the hd for advanced features, to put a "Hard Drive Required" sticker on the box instead of telling them to write games as if the hd isn't there. As it is, few devs are now going to make enhanced features in their games.
