I see a lot talk about firearms when 3d printing discussions start, but my first thought was to print some new frames for my glasses. these things can cost hundreds of dollars, break easily, only consist of a few grams of plastic. I could have a different pair for every day of the year...
please wear light clothing so that the earth will cool, and Al Gore will not punch you in the face. oh, and change the background color of your web page.
Screw Google and all that "allowing people to have a choice" crap. I want a world where government controls all the frequencies, Kenneth! I am absolutely upset that a company is buying my freedoms out of the hands of politicians. Those bastards! Those a-holes want to buy from the government the ability for me - ME! - the ability to use software, hardware and services - at f-ing wholesale prices!! Can you believe that socialist pig crap! Why... the whole f-ing internet could fart without paying a tax of carbon credits! The huge manatee!
I'm not a physicist, so I may not "get it." But what's exciting about finding out that if you put a bunch of junk in front of a light beam, the light doesn't get through?
My hamster, Melvin, is slow when he's cold and "stops" light. Coincidentally, he can then "release" the light when hit with a laser.
you're right. however, nobody ever said that the disk/tape/dvd/worm/blu-ray needs to be in the same location as the original data... If my life/business depended on it, I would certainly keep it elsewhere. In other words, the media isn't important, it's the policy that keeps you "safe."
That's pretty funny to imagine, but there's really no need for tape except for very long-term storage. It's very economical nowadays to keep a large (enough) RAID array of disk for an short- and mid-term backups, in combination with WORM/DVD/tape for long-term backups. Anything that doesn't need to exist longer than 6 months for us, doesn't ever go to tape. You get great restore times, too. It's the "Emeril" restore - BAM!
I really couldn't care less until I can get greater than 486kbps over my ~17,000 foot link to my CO. You can transmit your butt to Uranus at the speed of light and it isn't going to make me thing you're some kind of super hero. That would still be cool though.
haha, thanks for the macroeconomics lesson and you only needed two lines!
I was going to be really fresh and say "There's no such thing as a free lunch." That's only one line!
[...]but their technology is being sold worldwide.
point made and taken. But damn, that means I'm paying for it too.
The Australian government, with its reduced spend on the CSIRO can now take that money and spend it on something else or return it to taxpayers in the form of tax cuts.
I can just hear the government now: "Wow, we've got all this money left over. We'd better give it back!" hrmm...
...This means that we, the taxpayers, don't have to.
you don't understand macroeconomics, do you? When all the wireless providers pay CSIRO, they'll raise their prices to come out even. Anytime the government is benefiting financially, you're paying for it. It's just a matter of how many people are between your wallet and them.
If you want to leave the greatest country on the planet (my arrogant opinion, but easily debated), I'll do my best to buy you the ticket. I'd be happy to see you go, considering you're probably destructive while you're here. Do you: want constitutional rights for terrorists? not think we're at war? think terrorists will forget about us if we quit "provoking them" (9/11 anyone)? think more taxes are good for citizens? think we shouldn't spy on phone conversations of terrorists? think the social security system is viable long-term? think we should let anybody walk across our borders and get benefits paid by us? get lost and remember not to take your finger-nail clippers on the plane.
sorry for the venomous response, but I'm sick of this anti-patriotic crap. I fully expect to get burnt to a crisp on slashdot.
if you're foreign to the US and want to immigrate, welcome aboard. just follow the rules and I'll buy you a beer.
Get rid of the lawns. Lawn grass required over two inches of rain per week (or the equavalent in sprinklers) and does nothing.
huh? that's quite a claim. my area doesn't get anywhere near 2" per week and my grass is pissing me off by growing all the time. If you were a politician you would have a difficult time running on the "grass is bad" platform too.
imagine their sad faces when they realize that's what charges their electric cars.
I only lurk for the comments. The comments are slashdot. If all of you leave, please leave a note where you're going - it's dangerous to go alone.
also, I came to spread FUD rumors about upcoming slashdot microtransactions.
the post is a secret poll to see who reads TFA.
it's the giant lemongrabs
+1 came to post this. you could stream eye-fi to a tiny pc in your trunk powered w/ a dc-ac inverter, run linux on it, do whatever you want.

everything about this story make me sad. remember when NASA was an acronym?
X-Ray. See through. Solid. You keep using those words. I do not think they mean what you think they mean.

who is "/." and what's his ID# ? He sounds like a whiner.
Does anyone know what is new here ?
What the deuce? I'll have none of your foul mind-trickery! Blast!
