  1. You are at a similar point to me... on Getting Beyond the Helldesk · · Score: 1

After 14 years of different levels of computer support and helpdesk, from setting up AS/400 terminals to admining a variety of server types and everything in the middle...I've reached an odd point. Sometimes I wonder if I'm just unlucky, but I have never worked in a place where the users were tech savvy. If anything most seem to be going backwards. I spend more time now holding a user's hand than I ever used to. And after all these years burnout is settling in. Sadly, unless you move beyond anything in the even remotely support range, things do not seem to get better. I've started taking seminars regarding starting my own business - not a tech related business I may add. While I love technology in all it's forms, I don't believe I can go much longer in the support area. I agree with the other posters that taking yourself in another direction may be your best thing. You may decide that you do want to continue with support. You may discover that you never want to do that job again. Either way, you seem to be young and unattached, this is the time of your life to try new things! We all get stuck in a rut it seems, that this 'career' we've chosen first has to be what we do for the rest of our lives. It isn't, and for better growth as a human, it shouldn't be.

  2. Re:Wonderful news on Acer to Acquire Gateway for $710 million · · Score: 1

The wild part is - Gateway has been looking into buying Packard Bell, as has Lenovo

    From the article:

"Acer's acquisition deal with Gateway also derails rival Lenovo Group's plans to acquire Packard Bell."

Not only are they looking to become the next one, they want to buy the original!

  3. I AM VINDICATED! on Microsoft .NET Patch May Make PCs Go "Haywire" · · Score: 1

I spent all day Wednesday trying to figure out what the bloody hell was going wrong with our server running the helpdesk software (SQL, web based, that sort). Stupid me, I had loaded the patches deemed 'critical' by MS. I unloaded that patch and all was fine. No one believed me when I said it was the culprit. I AM VINDICATED!

That being said, at least the damned thing uninstalled easily.

  4. Am I the only one thats had no issues with WoW? on No More Players for World of Warcraft - For Now · · Score: 1

Maybe I'm the oddball, maybe I'm playing on the right server or maybe my karma is just perfect, but I received this game for XMas and have had no issues at all, other than a minor glitch here and there. No queue, wait time, anything - I want to send props out to Blizzard for doing this, realizing they have an issue before things get too crazy...and thank them for creating a wonderfully deep, rich, fun, world, where me and my level 24 undead warlock are most happy together :-)

  5. Amen Sister Gamer on Playing Games While Not Ruining Your Relationship? · · Score: 1

I've been a hardcore if it bleeds it leads gamer since the original wolfenstein games (and I aint talking the 3d one, this one was nice and flat and 2d)
Geek grrls and gamer grrls exist, we just tend to be rather independent and not terribly needy of male companionship...and when we do seek it out yes (at least a good chunk of us anyway) seek fellow geeks. It is hard as hell for a man to understand any techy female if he ain't into it too...I think it hurts the male ego if a girl out-techs the guy...

  6. This sort of thing should not be just ignored... on Congress Plans DMCA Sequel: The SSSCA · · Score: 1

or taken lightly for that matter. The best way to quell stupidity of Congress is to yell, scream, rant and rave loud and long. I am fortunate enough to have a Congressman who listens to his constituents, I've sent letters to him before and actually spoken to him before regarding issues. I have emailed Rep. Hollings and plan to do the same to my Congressman and Senators. I'm not the best at speaking my mind, but I hope to at least have gotten part of my point across with this.

    Here's my email:

I am writing to you in regards to your newly proposed revamp of the DMCA, known as the SSSCA. I have to say this is one of the most insane, freedom-squashing laws I have seen come out of anyone in Congress in the last several years. I understand the need for stiffer copyright laws, but to go this far is outrageous. The way this current resolution reads, it would be illegal for me to decide to write and test my own operating system, or to build my own hardware devices for my computer. It would be a total monopoly held by a handful of the annointed. It seems to me it is more of an attempt to kill any OpenSource operating system, and to stop anyone from writing their own software for anything. Copyrights on the Internet are a big issue in this day and age, and I fully understand that. But this extreme way of dealing with it leans more towards a totalitarian type of government. The last thing we need in our lives is more government intrusion. Why stop with just computers? Why doesn't the government tell me what TV sets to buy, what VCRs I should get, what DVD players I have to have? All so I won't by some accident videotape a TV show and give it to a friend...we can't have that now can we? This sort of law is a step in the wrong direction. I may not be in your home state, but rest assured I have emailed my own Congressman and Senators regarding this issue as well. This sort of over the top extremism needs to be stopped now before it gets out of hand. Thank you for your time.

handing out step-by-step installation sheets (got one for Mac and PC). Most kids coming in now are techno-savvy enough to muddle through. Of course there are always going to be some that just dont' know how to do it--then again thats part of what they pay me for heh... Besides, its kinda cool to be able to help the guys out in their dorm rooms...they always give you this look of 'but you're a GIRL!' Notch one for the girlie geeks...
