Time critical mailing will go out the window. I can see how this might make any corporate user irate. The same thing goes for challenge-response, the time delay in the business world is unacceptable.
This would be great for personal mail, but that's about it. ISPs would have the same problems with it because their business-class users most likely use the same servers as their consumer-class users.
After listening to the witty banter of both sides of the debate on this current war, I've come to the following conclusions:
Ridding this planet of a genocidal maniac is GOOD. Stopping the development of devastanting weapons by a genocidal manic is GOOD. Liberating people from constant fear of getting raped for stepping out of line is GOOD. Relieving a point of tension in an already over-tensed region is GOOD. Protecting the national interests of my homeland is GOOD. Protecting my way of life, and therefore, the way of life of many people across the globe is GOOD.

Doing is alone is BAD!! Killing people is BAD!! Aggression is BAD!! WAR IS BAD!!
Boo-flipping-hoo. Weigh the pros with the cons and it simply doesn't even come close to remotely mattering on the tiniest scale the "offical" reason for killing this mofo. It needs to be done. I REPEAT FOR THE DEAF: IT NEEDS TO BE DONE. Obviously noone wants to do it, so we have to.
We do the best thing for the rest of the world, almost always at the sake of our nation's reputation but I for one don't give two flying flips. It needs to be done, and for the LOVE OF GOD why not do it now? We've learned, to our GREAT SADNESS, the great repercussion of our inactions when we could have killed Bin Laden. ANd no, folks, Saddam is to Bin Laden as Water is to H2O, same flippin difference. He's a murderer and he should have been taken in on war crimes a long time ago.
So I for one am ashamed that people who call themselves Americans don't understand why our nation has the unenviable position of having the cajones to take care of what HAS TO BE DONE. It has to be done NOW.
I love peace as much as the next guy, but I can't stand by and wait to be murdered in my own home.
And honestly people, why would Bush waste so much money and at the cost of human life, if the reasons weren't justifiable? Give me a frickin break, you have to be so partisan or just plain naieve to believe that crap.
Get a clue, use your brain and THINK for Christ's sake, our nation was founded in war and the longest peace on this planet war forged from the scraps of war. We have to start the elimination of the people for the good of humanity and the future of the planet.
I am filled with endless pride that I have a government that will act on what it believes to be right, regardless of the negative feedback. That we act regardless of the impact on our reputation is the greatest testament that America will push forward against all opposition to ensure the good of the world.
God Bless America, proud parent of the planet Earth.
That wasn't the meaning of the post. For instance, here in Cincinnati i've not seen a single commercial on TV for an alternative party on the local level in the 6 years i've legally voted. It's a helluva lot easier on a local level too..makes me wonder.
Anyway, when a company/organization knows what works, they'll never switch.
Politics these days are based on lobbying, and lobbying extremly hard, then lobbying some more. That all takes an extreme amount of money (to the 100s of millions of dollars on certain issues,.(*cough AOL*).
To that end, any smart investor knows that to put the money to good use, it helps to be using it on a major player rather than a fringe player. Hell, ever notice how many companies give money to both candidates in their districts?
Puh-lease. I find it almost humourous that you think the people only have "extreme" ideas. Yeah, saving the environment, taxing people for what they use...wow...f'n extreme.
I also think that 99% of our spoon-fed citizens don't know a damned thing about what these parties stand for. That's why they aren't in office, it's also why they never get votes at all.
Give these parties an equal amount of money as our esteemed labor party and business party and then we'll see how many people acutally reject these ideas as "extreme".
Is hugely influenced by the amount of money a political party has. This is why it's so insanely difficult for an additional party to make any gains. Dems and Repubs have cornered the national government, and that is very sad. The only thing this does is make for damn sure that the same vanilla issues come up again and again, because the agendas of the big parties coincide with the agendas of business. Other parties, Green, Reform, Libertarian have hugely varied political goals that most Americans never learn about.
It goes to figure that the artists themselves would have to take the official stance against the facist ways that the RIAA tends to take. Consumers, while holding the majority of the power, take very little action. The artists (whom started this in the first place, btw) need to take the proactive stance to create a fairer system.
Actually, you should pay attention to this statement:
The states get a vast majority of tax revenue from the federal goverment. This is called a parent-child relationship. Now, if the state gets more money on its own it has less reliance on the allowance from the federal government. This is turn means that more of your federal tax money pays for the eradication of Iraqi citizens.
How am I represented with my tax dollar in the state of Ohio when the tax income is going to the state of, say, California? That's the whole reason interstate taxes don't exist in the first place. Ah well, it's all for the better.
The more taxes we pay, the more Iraqi we can eradicate. Thanks Mr. Bush.
AOL failed because the online advertising industry failed. After they owned this giant media company they resolved to putting even more annoying AOL commercials on TW's network and failed miserably (you can't make money off yourself). All in all I can't say I'm surprised by this move, it's long overdue.
An alternative to this would be like a passive-active system where you have a chip embedded into your skin. Then when you are in proximity to the active scanner and try to turn the doorknob the thing recognizes you and unlockes the door.
Of course, someone could hack your arm off and get in your place but at that point I'd think you'd have more worrisome things on your mind.
Didn't even notice the outage, none of my customers or people browing my sites indicated that they noticed either. In the nature of multiple providers and the way the DNS structure works, it would take an awfully long time for a large number of people to notice anything.
We backup to an offsite backup server over a 3Mb link, we back up to on-site tape and central backup, and we keep off-site archives (1 per week, stored for 1 year at a different off-site location.)
I don't think an opinion on poor customer service is "slander". If this were the case, everyone would have been sued by now.
Slashdot could sue us when we bitch about reposts. Or the anti-slashdot site. Opinion is expressly protected by the First Amendment.
There is also a certain amount of rights granted to the media so that they can run stories that corporations may not like, or politicians for that matter, also granted by the protection of the First Amendment.
I've tried a few products that use the mouse gestures and I tend to find that I'm much much faster using the keyboard shortcut keys, etc. I would envision that these features may be directed towards newbies?

"Company A sucks.
Company A's Reply: We do not.
Cheers
The girls round where i live all have the glazed look of sheeps. Only problem is that they still have the reflex.
Good God, another one.
It's like the co-founder of the company I work for. Whenever some buzz issue comes up he is an instant expert on it.
On a side note, this chick is hot.
Mod this down please, i can't believe i wrote it.

Already patched, thanks in part to VNC.
Not with my users. I'd get the frantic phone call in the middle of the night about losing documents.
Caller: OH MY LORD I LOST MY DOCS!
Me: Huh? Did you delete them?
Caller: No, i lost my PC-on-a-card.
Me: Tough luck, did you remember to allow you docs to get backed up?
Caller: I have to do that?
Me: Er, did you not get the memo?
Caller: I thought you did everything like that (and wipe my ass besides).
Me: No, good luck finding a new job.
I'm getting a 65" Digital Widescreen. Beat that one Dean!
We'll finally be able to definitively state that yes, indeed, the cat is in the box.

Also, no competition is a bad thing for business.
It takes a lot of money to get the word out, G.
