First. I am glad that you work for a place that takes security seriously. Most of us work at places that won't let you lock a machine down so tight it is nothing more than a "dumb" terminal.
Second. If you expect anyone to believe that no place you "visited" ever had a second issue with viruses then you are either a liar or don't talk to the people there OR they are not allowed to actually use their machines for anything other than basic applications. I also visit many government agencies and will concede that most of them don't ever have any problems. That is because they don't do anything! Don't let your lack of true public sector work cloud your judgement. I will also concede that it "IS" possible to get a Windows client secure, and keep it secure, but you the admin will have to spend considerably more time working with security patches than any other OS, and don't even start with the "well the hackers/crackers target windows..." The problem is that Microsoft has never taken security seriously, their focus was to make stuff easy on the users. i.e. DDE and OLE.
Yes it "is" possible to administer a Windows network, but the amount of work is considerably more (with regards to viruses, email, spyware) than other platforms.
700+ Macs --- Never had an email virus. Never had an issue with spyware.
100 linux machines -- Never had any virus. Never had any spyware issues.
1000+ windows boxes. Many full time jobs spend doing little but virus removal. Yes we have Norton... Also spyware is a HUGE problem. It has gotton to the point that our clients machines do nothing but have pop-ups and slow down to a crawl.
So in my opinion, switching to ANYTHING non Microsoft Windows will reduce the total cost of ownership after the initial pain of moving. Also, non of these Windows users have administrative access. I will say one good thing about Microsoft Windows, you generally don't have to ask if it is supported, but then again it is almost getting that way with Linux.
Also, do you honestly believe that SP2 will address all the remote secuirty issues of Windows? Would you bet your job on it? I wouldn't...
Well I don't know what he/she writes in, but I use SWING and have only had a few MAJOR issues with Java. 1. Out of 7 JVM's on multiple OS's only ONE JVM displayed gui development poorly. That was Microsoft's JVM. All the rest looked EXACTLY the same. Some were slower than others, but only the Microsoft one acted plain wrong. 2. When I used an X/Y layout manager stuff would not behave as expected. When I went to any other layout manager they worked well.
My issue is with point one above. I had a HUGE battle because "The Microsoft JVM was already loaded on every machine". The developers who were not Microsoft lackies had to fight hard to get another JVM loaded. For everyone who wants an "Open Source JAVA", I have the question. What happens when Microsoft ships a version that is poisioned and acts differently? We the client side Java developers will have to make a choice, and unfortunately for a lot of shops that would mean using Microsoft's Java.
Entire mac client OS marketshare 3% Entire linux client OS mareketshare 3%
Microsoft used and still uses it's 90%+ marketshare to prevent any competiton. They did this in an illeagal way.
What makes this funny, yet sad is that the government can't have it both ways. It can't say Microsoft is ok, and call of the justice department, then say "Stop!! Oracle buying PeopleSoft would be bad for the customer!" The customers would still have WAY WAY WAY more real choices for CRM/HR software than they have for a legitimate client OS. But the more I think about it, I have to realize that it is the government and they tend to do whatever they want to. Kind of like governors in large states.... (He should be fired, and taken to jail).
Good points, but as I see it Microsofts flaw is that the Xbox is just about the same as a PC. So developers have a choice to spend time developing software for the PC first, then port to the Xbox and or the PS2. Now seeing that the PS2 has about a 90 million install base, people will take that on. Seeing that the Xbox has around a 5 million install base and the PC has well over 100 Million.... It makes the decision simple.
The other issue, you mentioned in your post. Nintendo has the hearts and minds of customers to develop childrens games. This does not mean the games are not fun for adults, but it does mean that there will be a large selection of games that smaller children can own and play. Microsoft by their own words gave up that market to focus on the 13-30 year old boy/men. The problem is that that market was really 13-18 year olds. Most people over 18 bought good computer systems and played their games on it. This coupled with the poor economy has caused the Xbox to be almost a complete failure. Yes it is the number two or three console, but the cost of it was HUGE and Microsoft will never recoupe that loss.
Sony on the other hand, has done a few things very well. One was to keep the price of the PS2 on par with the technically better Xbox. So when the average Joe went to buy a new game system, he saw the two at the same price and thought they were "about" equal, AND he new about the Playstation AND he saw the large game base it had. The other thing Sony has done well is to control the manufacturing process. Microsoft is held hostage by Nvidia and Intel. Sony has been able to combine a few chips together in to one, and hense save money.
What can Microsoft do? Well they can continue to dump large sums of money at this market hopeing to chew in to Sony's lead. I strongly disagree with you that most people will buy multiple systems. Most families will not do this. They will buy a new system every three of four years, but they understand that the console is just a small part of EVERYTHING you have to buy. You are the exception to the rule here.
Now seeing that Microsoft is going to TRY and release a new game system before Sony, is a great move, but I would ask "What market are they going for now?" That question needs to be anwered, and it needs to be executed far better than Xbox1.
Lastly, I believe that you are starting to see the sign of the problems to come for Microsoft. They still enjoy an illeagal monopoly with Office and client computers, but their profits were lower for last quarter, this even though sales were up significantly. There will come a time when those profits will be to low to sustain the "give away the product" to own the market strategy Microsoft has done in the past. Not to mention the board of directors is probably getting tired of seeing how much money they are loosing with MSN and Xbox....
Are you seriously comparing poor black people to those gas'ed in Iraq? Most organizations I know that are hiring would love to have a hard working black person. Black people in the U.S. have NEVER had such opportunity.
Are you comparing the mass starvation in Africa to the VERY VERY VERY small percentage of people that get government assistance in the U.S? This would be almost laughable if I hadn't read your first statement.
Do people in America need money for medical care. Yes. You being a socialist wouldn't understand that those who work hard and save can get things others can't. Also no emergency room in the U.S. will turn down anyone in need of medical treatment. Could it be better yes...
Largest financial difference in the world... This did make me laugh. All people in the U.S. have the ability to greatly improve their life. You could be homeless one day and a billionair in a few years with hard work and good idea. Ever wonder why the U.S. has more people trying to get in to the country than any other...
Information driven by corporations... You must be some conspirousy person. It is funny you mention Rupert Murdoch and NONE of the others like Turner.
You imply that you have to be rich to change careers. Yes it "could" take some money. It may not though. It depends on what you want to do. If someone wanted to become a brain surgeon then, yes it would take some money to go to school, however that person could get governemnt loans (at a very reasonable rate) to improve their life.
You have to be a Christian male to be president? You could have said the same thing about govenors a few decades back, then you could have said the same thing about congress people a few years back, then you could have said the same thing about senators a few years back... see where I am going.... If every person thought as you then there would NEVER had been a governor or senator.
Lastly, what country do you live in Mr Anonymous Coward?
Well I guess I will take my turn bitching. However, I am in the process of switching our stuff to SuSe also...
My bitches are as follows: 1. RedHat abandoning it's low(er) cos O.S. in favor of it's enterprise OS. The core reason most Linux made it in to copanies is because it was bascially free (small CD cost NOT be on any Enterprise version of Linux. So someone like me who does Java development and wants to use Jdeveloper can't use it on Linux unless I cough up the money for RHES 2.x or SuSe professional 8x. I wish Oracle would also pick one of the "desktop" non enterprise versions. As everyone says Linux is Linux (Oracle and IBM have both said it), soooooo then support a non enterprise modern distro..... It seems weird to me that Oracle wants to drive it's developers to WindowsXP (supported and cheaper).
My only other grip is that I wish I would have looked at SuSe earlier, and I wish I had the time to work with Gentoo and Debian.
My bitching on this issue is over.... I feel much better now.:-)
It's funny you mentioned that. I watched CNN, FOX, ABC, CBS, NBC, BBC(much later) and MSNBC and saw the same thing. Granted it made the CNN and BBC executives mad that Iraq was happy.
You must have been watching something else.
What exactly was on Jehad tv that day? We can't seem to get that on our Cable over here in the states...
Well if he is black then they have improved his rights a ton.
If he is an illeagal alien then he has a far easier time getting employment and citizenship.
His average household income has gone up dramatically in his life. (NOTE: the average american home now has less people than in 1960)
The court system in America if FAR FAR FAR more liberal than it was in 1960, and tends to find in favor of ridiculous lawsuits against major companies.
America the most feared country in the world.... Well I guess you and I saw something different on TV when the U.S. came in and freed Iraq.
They have increased terrorism.... Umm.... let's see , you can either attack terrorist or be attacked. You obviously believe in negotiating with terrorist, and the current administration doesn't. Let's see now... negotiations has worked sooo well for Israel in the last 40 years... Please understand that I am not saying negotiate with other countries, but terrorist. There is a differece.
The U.S. is cutting back on... WTF? What do you call a cut? When the program gets $1 Billion a year and they don't get $2 Billion the next. Name a MAJOR program other than the military and NASA that has actually been cut. What people like to do is ask for a 100% increase in spending for their program and then when they only get 10% they say the administration CUT the budget.
You are either with us or with the terrorist.... Yep that is correct. It seems fairly clear. How many first or second world countries do you know that openly support terrorism? Why would they want to? If they do then aren't they basically declaring war on the U.S.? Should the U.S. wait until they kill another 3,000+ citizens before doing something? So to the previous poster... you are actually safer now, because the U.S. is not sitting by waiting for some governement funded terrorist to slam a plain in to your building.
They personally profit from the war... The U.S. and every other country that helped should gain some money back if possible. I understand that this is different than what you would do, i.e. give the terrist money and hope (but not pray) that they don't hurt us.
I could go on also.
The posters previous comments were on the mark. He has been given an opportunity to improve his social status with little true intervention from the government, short of possibly being drafted (he is too young for this).
Other things I can think of. He has not had to worry about being gased. (Iraq) He has not had to worry about starving. (Africa) He has had one of the worlds best medical care. He lived in a society that works to achive equality among it citizens. His economy isn't run by the mob. (Italy) His water is clean. (Africa and most 3rd world) His information isn't driven by the government. (Many) Heck in this case it is just the opposite. He could choose what type of career he wanted, and even still at 40+ could change it completely. (Ton) He could get in to politics and drive the future of his country. He could openly say how bad the U.S. is and how he hates our president. (kind of like you). He has the ability to worship God freely.
America is a government by the people for the people... If you don't like it run for freaking office. Change it.
You bring up Hotel work and I have to laugh... my family has worked in hotels and ran them. I feel VERY comfortable in saying that you do NOT need H1Bs. Next you will say that we need them for our fast food industry.... another myth...
Thanks for the input, but I still don't see the advantage. Most people that I deal with that use Java applications (not applets), have a modern JVM, or they can control what JVM is installed. How do they fit in to the rest of the desktop better? Does drag and drop work better? Again, I am not trying to start a flame war, but it seems that Swing is a constent, and will run on anything (NetWare, PDA, etc...) and SWT won't. It appears that SWT would run great on Windows, but may have issues with other OS'es.... Is that the case?
Are the SWT libraries 100% java? or do they use Native widgets? I honestly don't know, but I have done a bit of development with SWING and have not found it to be slow at all. Yes JDK 1.2 was slow, but 1.3 and 1.4 SWING apps have worked well for what I do. Granted hardware has increased in the last 4 years also...
What are you doing with SWT that can't be done with SWING and perform well? NOTE: I am not trying to start a flame war, but just understand.
1. Before 9/11/2001 the U.S. was in a resession. The I.T. market sucked. Now Before JAN 2000 that was another matter, but it was starting to loose steam by March of 2000.
2. Your point about people in India willing to work for less money... Well companies don't EVER come to their I.T. staff and let them counter offer. They just outsource it and then when it fails, that CXO is gone (with a great package), and the company is stuck trying to bring it back in house or fight with a company that is in a different time zone and can't speak English. The real issue is the greed at the top. Why do you think the CEO of HP is so worried about this? Mabe she should look at her >1Million a year salary. Is she worth this? Heck, given what she has done with HP/Compaq is she worth anything?
I do hope that you realize that people that act like you will NEVER have any employee loyalty. Just the opposite in fact. Any person who worked for you could and should leave your company at the MOST critical time, and if they want to stay, then hold the company hostage forcing you to sign some life long contract with them; or just be a dick and not document anything, then just leave without any notice... I have seen a lot of small shops treat their employees like dirt, and you can bet that those companies will be the first to have serious trouble when the economy picks up. Those companies, and larger ones like HP and Oracle are the ones that love slave labor, and fear an economy that is good for their employees.
3. paper MCSE's willing to work cheap. Some will some will not. The U.S. does not and never will need H1Bs to do ANY JOB!!! There are skilled people here that will work for minimum wage! If a particular job requires a certain skillset then our government should be working with our education system to address that issue, NOT EVER going offshore to solve the problem. Again the only reason for this is slave labor. Greedy people love slave labor.
It will be interesting to see what Bush does on this issue. In my opinion it will be an election maker. I find it sad that the only people that are seriously complaining about not passing any bill is those who make well over a million a year. If they were so worried then mabe they should take a pay cut for their company.
We could argue about the points of why we went to war. My main point is still valid, and that is that there was WAY more than one reason the war took place. I also left out one important reason. Sadaam never complied with the U.N. resolution. Heck even France, Germany and Russia agreed that Iraq didn't comply. They just wanted to keep giving Sadaam more time. France even went as far as to say that they would NEVER vote for any military action. I do find it a bit strange that they would agree to the resolution and then not want to back it up in any way except to keep giving more time.... but I digress.... again my main point is that there was more than one reason. We could argue about the reasons, and to be honest I might agree with you on some, but the fact remains that finding WMD's is not the only reason we went to war.
I would imagine we could also argue about if this war caused Libia to change as a country...
Actually you are not correct. One of the MANY reasons the U.S. and 60+ other allies declared war on Iraq was because of the weapons of mass distruction. The core reason the war came about was because of Iraq's unwillingness to comply with their U.N. agreement. Now I can't say that I blame them, because they got away without compliance for almost 9 years, and believed that the current administration would behave the same as the last.
Another point for war was that it was shown that there is a connection between O.B.L. and Sadaam.
Another point was that Iraq was training terrorist for use against the U.S. and it's friends.
There were more points, but I think you get where I am going. It was NOT one point.
Of course when they do find WOMD's some people will just say they are planted and choose not to believe...
I agree with your post, but being a race car fan you are watching the 3rd fastest. Most top fuel cars run 310+. Granted a F1 or Cart car could probably run that fast, but they don't currently.
Again I agree with the point of your post, now if Honda would just make the Goldwing lighter than an Accord:-)
I don't know what your salary is, so it makes it hard to debate your point. But I will say that I know a TON of I.T. people that were consultants that are now looking for work. Yes when they bill they do make excellent money, but when you factor in that they may have bench time (and few consulting companies pay for bench time anymore), they don't make that much money.
The eonomy in the U.S. is getting a lot better, but from what I see it still isn't great.
By no means am I saying that they sucked. Just it would have been a TON smarter to produce a chip that did both 2d and 3d. They eventually did do this, but by then it was starting to end with 3dfx.
I currently have a Radeon 8500 all in wonder. It BARELY works with Linux. Yes I can fight to get the 3D support to work, but what about all the other stuff like video capture with the card? Oh yeah and their instructions SUCK for getting the driver to work. Now lets talk about the ATI drivers for a second... I also have a windows hard drive that I boot to do the video stuff. Here was the choice with ATI and windows for many a years... Use an unsupported driver (slow) and play Never Winter Nights OR load the supported drivers and lock in about EVERY game you would want to play. Ahh but at least the video capture would lock up if you tried to capture more than 30 min of film...
I have heard that the latest drivers work, but for me, and a lot of other people it will be a LONG day before I buy another ATI card.
Also, have you checked out WINE with ATI stuff? Yeah that works well... If you want to take on a science project...
Your memory of the 3DFX and Nvidia are incorrect. The Vodoo 5 was VERRY late getting to market. Also remember that they CHOSE to not sell their chips to other graphic card manufacturers (Vodoo 3), but to produce a card by themselves. Brilliant move! That pissed off all the other card manufacturers that worked with them and left them NO choice but to use Nvidia chips. They did and also Nvidia worked better with Direct X than the 3DFX cards that were out at the time.
Lastly, wasn't it brilliant on 3DFX to produce cards that ONLY worked for 3D games (Vodoo 1).... Yep nothing like having to buy 2 video cards for a system, one for 2D and one for 3D. Oh yeah I almost forgot, wasn't a great idea to force some people to buy two freaking 3D cards to get performance (Vodoo 2)... 3DFX was the king ONLY because there was no real competition in the Windows world, and now there is. Nvidia bought them when they were all but dead.
Is it me, or does it seem weird that the URL has nothing to do with Microsoft. It is a hardcoded IP address. Yes it does use.ASP but not.ASPX or whatever the heck that.NET crap is.
I don't think this is from Microsoft.
On a somewhat related topic... I was contacted by phone, from an outside company (not Microsoft) but sponsored by Microsoft to answer development questions. I was suppose to get $25 for their "brief" survey. I remember the last question.
"What could Microsoft do to get you to use their software?"
Yeah but the HUGE difference is that the Mac wasn't chewing in to their profits and wasn't GAINING marketshare. Open Source scares the crap out of Microsoft. Specifically FREE software that competes against their core business scares the crap out of them. They take the open source threat very serious (unlike the Macintosh one).
It kinda sucks to be them in one regard. It is damn near impossible to compete with FREE when FREE is actually good enough. I do find it funny that the company that crushed out competitors like Netscape by giving away their software will end up dieing by the same tactic. Not that I think they will go away, but they will be a MUCH smaller player in the next 10 years.
Hey, my idea for Microsoft is too start outsourcing more of their development to India... Yeah that should work great... or better yet how about they could start paying people to use their software... Oh yeah I forgot they already have tried both of these and people are still switching off of their stuff.
First. I am glad that you work for a place that takes security seriously. Most of us work at places that won't let you lock a machine down so tight it is nothing more than a "dumb" terminal.

They are so left wing it is not even funnny.
Yeah, I got my wife an emarald. I thought it would be great, because it is also her favorate stone.... then I found out they were more than Diamons :-(
Oh well, she is worth it, and it does look great.
Ahh but multiple $10 adds up. Just ask the Howard Dean campaign. :-)
This is just the beginning of the end for Microsoft. Rome is falling. I do wonder if they can actually inovate anything...

(Iraq)
He has not had to worry about starving. (Africa)
He has had one of the worlds best medical care.
He lived in a society that works to achive equality among it citizens.
His economy isn't run by the mob. (Italy)
His water is clean. (Africa and most 3rd world)
His information isn't driven by the government. (Many) Heck in this case it is just the opposite.
He could choose what type of career he wanted, and even still at 40+ could change it completely. (Ton)
He could get in to politics and drive the future of his country.
Where do you get your facts?
The core reason the war came about was because of Iraq's unwillingness to comply with their U.N. agreement. Now I can't say that I blame them, because they got away without compliance for almost 9 years, and believed that the current administration would behave the same as the last.
...
Another point for war was that it was shown that there is a connection between O.B.L. and Sadaam.
Another point was that Iraq was training terrorist for use against the U.S. and it's friends.
There were more points, but I think you get where I am going. It was NOT one point.
Of course when they do find WOMD's some people will just say they are planted and choose not to believe
I agree with your post, but being a race car fan you are watching the 3rd fastest. Most top fuel cars run 310+. Granted a F1 or Cart car could probably run that fast, but they don't currently.
:-)
:-)
Again I agree with the point of your post, now if Honda would just make the Goldwing lighter than an Accord
I own a Ducati
Yes it does use .ASP but not .ASPX or whatever the heck that .NET crap is.
My anwer
"GPL all your software"
I never got my $25... Shocker!!!!
