    In the mean time I use my Internet access on my cell phone and the Skype client I loaded onto it to make all of my all of my mobile VoIP calls.

    Don't bitch at us about what the Swedish government has chosen to charge their citizens for the privelage to use gasoline. According to this article 68.5% of the price of gas in Sweden is tax. That's $4.16 per gallon at $6.08. Meaning actual cost is $1.92 per gallon, which is probably about what it is here in the US minus the taxes.

    Seems to me these color coded systems do more to confuse than they do good.

    I totally agree w/ you. We need more clear statements about what the problem is and what we should do about it... like this.

    Symantec ThreatCon as a part of global DeepSight Threat Management System saying Increased alertness and Internet Security Systems X-Force with Increased vigilance at AlertCon.

    LOLOMGWTFBBQ? At least with the colors you can say, oh well red is bad, and green is good... and so that's that. When AlertCons are X-Forced w/ 3 points of Increased Vigilence and 1 point of Vitality, whose to know what could happen or what arcane anti-sploit knowledge you should call upon.

    My guess is that they missed some bugs :/

    The list is no doubt not absolutely complete... but you could easily attribute the difference in the # of vulnerabilities between Windows and Linux to the the fact that Linux is Open Source, and therefore more people are participating in the debugging process. Or it could be that Windows really does have fewer vulnerabilities than Windows. Of course that doesn't mean that the vulnerabilities that it does have are less impactful than those on Linux.

    How does VMWare fit into EMC's strategic interests?

    VMWare enables virtualization of servers, which means larger servers with larger centralized/conslidated storage requirements (typically SAN). EMC's major strength is storage. VMWare is also simply a great product that obviously make EMC a nice profit which they can use for other strategic initiatives.

    I was a Blockbuster subscriber... but after a year (and the dreck that's been coming out of Hollywood) I ran out of movies to watch. I wish they'd stock more TV shows (new and old).

    If Blockbuster could work out a deal w/ the movie industry to burn the DVDs onsite so they could have all the benefits of an unlimited DVD inventory and all the convenience of 20 minute turn around times, I think they'd really hurt NetFlix & Amazon's business.

    Your story brought back a fond memory I have of my son. A couple years ago, when he was seven we were working on setting up his new laptop to replace the desktop we got him when he was three. He was very excited because we had purchased him a very high end system. As we opened the laptop box he looked me straight in the eyes, and with a little gleam he said to me, "Dad, can you imagine a beowulf cluster of these?". That's what dad's live for!

    I applaud your desires to be such a wonderful and caring parent. Not only are you looking out for your child's younger years, but by providing them with the Gentoo LiveCD you'll give them years and years of joy as they constantly recompile the OS and software only to find out that the latest version was just released moments before they finished compiling. It's an endless cycle of computing fun. Hooray!

    I started out using a Kaypro II luggable writing some pretty crappy MBASIC (learned entirely from the reference manual). My first PC was a Packard Bell 486SX w/ 4MB of RAM (upgraded to 8MB for Windows 95).

    I know most of you will not to admit this, but computing in the post 9/11 world is very dangerous. With online predators, viruses, terrorist attacks and the like, I don't belive any child should be exposed to the Internet or computers without adult supervision.

    On top of the risks there's the expense of it all. Unless you're quite wealthy how are you supposed to afford your child's new car, w/ in-dash DVD player, and stereo system and all of those minutes that they use on the cell phones as they talk to their friends while driving around watching "Dude Where's My Car"? Dangerous and expensive I say!

    March of the Penguins, according to Yahoo! Movies did not top the US box office this weekend. It was #6 behind The Dukes of Hazzard, Wedding Crashers, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sky High, and Must Love Dops. How does this constitute "Tops" at the box office? Top means highest point... not in the top 10. To put the movie's earnings in perspective Dukes of Hazzard, the top (#1) movie at the US box office, made $30,575,000 slightly over 5 times as much as March of the Penguins made this weekend.

    The infrastructure built by the Bells was heavily subsidized by... your tax dollars.

    The education I recieved and use to make a living was heavily subsidized by... your tax dollars.

    This means nothing. The trade was we subsidize that infrastructure so everyone can get phone service as quickly as possible. Without the subsidies it's likely many communities would be stuck without phone service due to their small size or distance from existing infrastructure. The Bells would only expand as the market could sustain the immense cost of installing wired infrastructure.

    I agree w/ you that the first review you mentioned wasn't of much value to you... but because it was long you could determine that that customer's low rating was not due to something that would affect you. Also, had I been confused about the product and read the review I may not have made the same mistake.

    I would initially tend to agree with you about pissed off people... but my experience with Amazon's reviews and IMDB reviews have shown that this doesn't seem to be the case. I've seen more positive reviews on Amazon (maybe they're mucking with the... although I doubt it b/c that would be quite a scandal for them) and IMDB seemed pretty balanced. That's just my experience though. Sounds like your experience was different.

    It sounds like you think reviews in general aren't much help... at least using the current tools and processes for collecting them.
