Second-life's attempt to be the world's Metaverse turned out to be just a huge advertising/hacking cluster fuck. Not saying that that Lively won't be a advertising/hacking cluster fuck but at least it sounds it would be more open to programmers, which will allow for more diverse possibilities, so there could be just as much good stuff as bad.
Can you explain that please? I mean, I already know you're full of shit. I'm just thinking it would be interesting to hear what set of lies and half-truths you plan to use.
Lev 20:13 "If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads."
The idea of capital punishment for homosexuality is definitely subject to debate considering what Jesus said about the coming Kingdom, but no "twisting" of the text is required.
No twisting of the text is required but twisting of the context definately is.
Starcraft was an RTS which is consistently touted as being the greatest RTS ever made, when, in fact, it did absolutely nothing special.
So which RTS is the best? I would love to compare this RTS to Starcraft's sales numbers, fame, meta critic rating, awards, and it's staying power in professional gaming.
Hell, even if you come up with a real argument describing why Starcraft isn't the best, Starcraft would need to have poor to decent ratings from some critics/gamers for your post to make an ounce of sense. Since there are rarely any gamer or critic reviews that even give it lower than an excellent rating, you are completely of your rocker saying it's the most overrated game.
By the way, your argument stopped any holding water once you said it was "It's Warcraft in space." I suggest you play both games again to see how immensely different the two games are, because if you truly believe that, you obviously don't know anything about the games.
Not to mention that if each piece of gold was an individual object that contain multiple bytes of information, a lot more bandwidth would have to be used when gold is transfered during looting and trading.
Ugh, so much wrongness...where do I begin. Here is a little disclaimer: I'm an indie game developer myself and I know a little bit about indie games. This is one of the games I've made.
It's not portal, but I challenge you to come up with something better by yourself in 3 months.
Gaming has NOT gotten too mature for innovation. One word, Portal. 8 students with help from Valve for polish.
Techinacally, Portal is basically a rip off of Narbancular Drop which those 8 students developed first. Why didn't anyone hear of ND before Valve got of hold of it? I would imagine becaue it just isn't the quality of game we would see from a company like Valve or Blizzard. So you really can't even count Portal as an innovative game. And the innovators got lucky they got picked up by Valve, otherwise they're creation wouldn't have gone anywhere.
Also, for every Portal there are literally thousands of innovative/indie games that just plain suck ass. They might be original ideas but originality does move things off the shelf. Long past are the days we will see new game genres, just different ways of blending mutliples (like Spore etc).
What happened to Ghost? They're a mortal, fallible company just like every other one on the company.
They realized that the game sucked, and had the balls to yank it because they didn't want to ruin their reputation of making quality games. The fact they admitted to themselves that they are a "moral, infallible" company shows just how dedicated to making a good game Blizzard is.
Actually wait to release things? The release of WoW? Paladins didn't have talents at launch. Server disconnects were rampant. Server crashes were rampant.
Are you a programmer? You don't sound like one. However, if you have the ability to predict the future and anticipate how many people will use your servers, and then develop the most optimal server backbone for those numbers, you should seriously put your resume out for lead fucking db programmer of the universe. I don't think I've played an MMO that hasn't had some kinks during it launch or at some point. Maintaining servers for an MMO is a extremely complicated task and Blizzard resovled these issues in a timely manner. Could they have done it better/faster? Probably, but their response made MMO's like SWG seem like a joke.
Listen, if Blizzard games aren't your cup of tea, that's understandable. Hell, I could only stomach so much WoW and War3 before i got bored. But you have to admit, they are a very patient company that only release games that are acceptable to their high standards. Very few game companies do that anymore these days as they succomb to the will of their publishers. You have to give Blizzard credit for resisting that. If you can't see all of the many things that Blizzard does right, then I suggest you play some other games, and seriously take a step back and judge them.
Its 2008, we can make better games. Can we make better money printing factories? Probably not, these two products are already harnessing the weaknesses of the human psyche.
That's a little condescending towards the people who play these games, don't you think? You can even make the argument that deciding to play a video game at all is a weakness of the human psyche. Whatever. I think Blizzard's games were fun, and they stayed fun for a while, not forever, but for awhile. Just because millions of other people agree with me doesn't make them mentally weak or whatever opinion you have of them.
I actually kind of agree with you that we can make better games. But it's not Blizzard you want to be pointing your finger at. If more companies were like Blizzard, I honestly believe we would have a much easier time finding quality games. Blizzard games can be seen as "money printing factories" for a good reason. They made quality games that were very fun. They gained that reputation because of their track record.
I don't really agree with the negative tone of your post (I think both games are great), but you forgot one of main similarities between the two games: Skill trees.
That's just his campaign strategy. How much "change" will he actually generate if he gets the White House seat? With a pretty evenly divided congress, probably not much. That doesn't mean he isn't going to try though. But you honestly can't tell me his opponent would have a better chance at changing things. I'm sure most of his advisors that McCain chooses (you know, the people that actually make the decisions) will probably have had experience in the Bush administration one way or the other. The republican party had their chance to change things six of the eight last years in congress and the last eight years in the White House. If you honestly liked the changes that happened to the US during this time, then be my guest, don't vote Barack because he hasn't magically changed the world as a single senator out of two hundred. Just know that the economy has consistently done better under a democratic president almost across the board for the last 50 years.
This is why it's so much easier for governors to be elected as presidents then congressman. I totally would vote for your bill that you proposed, but the second I make the vote, the party who I was running against would put up ads saying "Cornflake917: He supports curb-stomping puppies. Is he ready to be our leader?" I would be deemed the puppy-hater, even though I really like puppies.
If this FISA thing is honestly the best criticism people have against Obama, then I think he's in good shape.
If I had mod points, I'd mod you redundant. This is said on almost every slashdot article involving game technologies. Yes, we all know that gameplay is more important than graphics, can you please find something new and interesting to say? Or do you need the guaranteed "insightful" karma?
Just because gameplay (just a stupid term btw, since every one has their own definition of it) is more important doesn't mean that developers shouldn't spend resources on trying to get past the uncanny valley, since it is a real problem for games that are trying to achieve a realistic look.
I can read any book I want for free, if I get it from a library. Would you prefer that they be illegal? Should the author be angry?
Nice attempt at a straw man. However the library pays for the books. You get the books for free because libraries are paid for by the government. The author got compensated for the sale of that book copy.
I can watch any movie my friend owns, if I want to borrow it or watch it at her house. Is that morally wrong? Should the director be upset?
Again, you are putting words into the GP's mouth that he did not say. The correct comparison is if you wanted to watch a movie and didn't want to pay for it, so you went to the homeless guy down the street who was selling DVD rips for 2$ a pop. If I were a director, I'd rather people who are buying my movies to buy it legitimately.
I can enjoy viewing paintings for free if I go to a museum. Should I have to pay each artist whose painting I witness? Should the artist be unhappy about this?
Ugh, at this point I'm trying so hard to be respectful and not insult your intelligence, but give me a fucking break. First of all, paintings and software are totally different things. The museum paid for the ownership of the item. It doesn't work that way with software. The painter doesn't see lost revenue of his painting because the money was already given to him after he sold it to museum or a middle-man. It's totally different with software. Generally, you can't make profit from selling one copy of software, so you need to have protections that prevent people obtaining your software for free. If software companies can't protect themselves, then we would be society without a software industry.
I've never seen so much common sense in a post, it...just.. doesn't make sense!
Seriously, I've played WoW for several months I got bored of it after getting close to the level cap. Even though I got bored, I know I could have made things more interesting by joining a guild the fit my playing style more, but I decided to move on anyways. I never really thought that the game sucked, and after playing other MMO's and RPG's, it really puts things in perspective about how much of a quality game WoW is. I still don't play WoW, and I probably won't play it more than a month or so after checking out the new expansion. That being said, I still think it's a great game. So many people think they can make the world's greatest game, and I think this type of ego is what makes them say "X sucks" instead of "I got burnt out from playing X to much." Since I've gotten into game development as a hobby I believe that until you actually have to sit down and implement your ideas you won't realize how difficult game development is.
Knew it! Thanks for the laugh.
How is it illegal when the company who created the software no longer exists?
Those aren't really questions, dude. Those are political attacks that are disguised as questions. Nice try.
Can you explain that please? I mean, I already know you're full of shit. I'm just thinking it would be interesting to hear what set of lies and half-truths you plan to use.
His father died from a car crash. I didn't realize car crashes were hereditary diseases.
You really shouldn't be modded informative because the information you provide is misleading.
You do realize that Nintendo will probably release a next generation hand-held, right?
Mentioning that the game has Spore-like DRM on Slashdot is really the exact opposite of advertising.
You just replace "hoes" and "booty" with "Christ" and "salvation."
Big salvation christ!!!

The biggest mistake I think was not stopping.
Yeah, because Microsoft/Bungie totally lost so much money from the poor sales of Halo 2 and 3.
Give me a break....

Damnit, even Einstein hated band geeks like me. I'm so glad high school is behind me.

Before I get ambushed. There are, in fact, one hundred senators in the united states. =)
