  4. Names with meaning can be painful on Best DNS Naming Scheme For Small/Medium Businesses? · · Score: 1

I used to name machines with meaning.... like sles10 (e.g. a box with Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10). However, does that describe that it is 32bit, 64bit, Intel, PPC, etc? What about its purpose? Is it a web server, email, dns, dhcp?? What about it's location? Aack!! To try to put all of that information into a name means having incredibly long names... which probably isn't desirable. Oh sure, you can build a cryptic code using single letters where the placement tells you the type of the coding to use... but then you have names that look like hash... eww!

So... here's my opinion. Name machines how you like. If you want a set of machines to have some kind of relationship... then maybe do a theme for that set. The relationship could be based on CPU, OS, function, whatever. So if you DO choose a theme, I don't think you need to be uniform. Have fun.

So... how do I know what a machine is used for, what it is, what it runs? A database. All companies should have a record of their machines at least for warranty and support... add the rest of the information there. Just my opinion.

For example, if you have a cluster of two machines... maybe one is called romulus and one is called remus. Or jacob and esau. Be creative IMHO. Have fun. Don't get caught up naming, enjoy the job and make people guess why you name machines why you have named them. You'll have stories to tell instead of boredom.

I believe you have been mislead. Certainly there are pseudo-scientists that are Christians, but not all. Not by a long shot. So far every response to my request for TRUE science is only leading to the conclusion that today's science IS NOT based on experimentation and observation, but purely on assumption and prejudice. If some of sciences supporting evidence is drawn upon faulty assumption, then it can greatly skew further observation.

For example, most old Earth scientists based their findings on uniformalism. Most young Earthers would reject uniformalism since its an assumption and not backed up by solid evidence. I'm not saying that there's an easy way to back it up or not... it's just something I've observed.

As a believer in Christ, I have long believed that the next step in anti-Christ science would be a "space seed theory". This is no surprise to me. However, I think that ultimately pseudo-scientists will adopt a "theory" that man was placed here by beings from another world. But we may be a few years away from that... we'll have to wait and see.

So far in my lifetime I have watched as science is sullied by self-proclaimed experts who make hypothesis into theory by virtue of their position in the community. And ultimately, those same self-promoted theories into fact, by the same rule. Experimentation and observation have died. I think today's scientists watch too much of the Sci-Fi Channel. It's easier to make things up than try to have meaningful discussion (or do actual work). Creation scientists are automatically discarded simply because of prejudice... not because of evidence. It's a shame. True scientists, whether they be anti-Christ or not, use experimentation and observation to support hypothesis... and not necessarily to define exact truth, but so that the pursuit of truth isn't marred by self-promotion or sensationalism.

I know, I know... "He's a creationist... shoot him and let his god sort him out." Sure... I expect nothing less from the majority of the "open minded" participants here. But perhaps there are still some that are truly open minded here.

I really do not see any way we can reach agreement unless you believe there is an absolute truth, even if difficult to ascertain by men. I am certainly presuming that truth does indeed exist and that man can actually pursue real truth, even without totally understanding it.

It's an interesting premise to consider that going back to the past (the days of "freedom") might end up with another 911 terrorist attack.

One might argue that since the terrorists (presumably under the "freedom" days) are already among us, that there's no good way of identifying them in order to stop their activities.

We live in a world where many people do not know their neighbors, nor do they even have the desire to know their neighbors. We have taught our children now from youth that all strangers are DANGER. Is it any wonder that terrorist groups can operate effectively without fear of discovery? In addition to "stranger danger", we've also adopted things like "don't ask, don't tell" and "mind your own business" to the point of where neighborhoods are no longer controlled by the populace (we no longer even desire to "tar and feather" and "have em' ride the rail" out of town.. not that I'm advocating mass witch hunting either). Now we fully expect our own gov't or police to be the sole entity in determining who is "ok" and who is "not". And when those gov't/policing entities fail us, we sue them.

And we WONDER why we don't have the freedoms we used to? We don't have those freedoms because we have acted irresponsibly with regards to our duties as citizens to train our children to do what is right and honorable. Instead we set up examples of lewd living, cheating, piracy and CLAIM that we want "privacy" mainly to protect the deeds we have done that aren't "right" or "honorable". Sigh...

To make matters worse, to combine irresponsible living with no policing just continues moral degradation and chaos.

Want to go back to a "freer" time? Time to teach again what is right and wrong and THEN live it out! Not with justice... for no one would survive but with grace and mercy so that everyone can understand that the desire is for everyone to work together to do what is right. For those that are unteachable and have caused much harm to society.... time for them to "hit the rails!"

Anyone who believes that the "fix" is to stop the current policies needs to understand that building back responsible human behavior is NOT an easy or quick task. Policing must continue until the populace takes back ownership and their own responsibility for policing themselves.

Loki had a lot of problems. There model was that they would pay in advance to get games to Linux and make up for it on the back side in sales. One problem, Linux people are cheap... REAL cheap. Instead of selling millions, they barely sold into the 10's of thousands. That and a plethora of other mismangement reasons forced them to shutdown.

The problem with Linux gamers is that they DEMAND a free ride. Same goes for any other piece of software on Linux that actually has a >$50 price tag.

I play games under Linux, I have OWNED some Loki titles (yes... some of us actually decided to support the effort rather than rip them off). I do own a REAL copy of Tux Racer (which puts the free version to shame btw). UT2004 is STILL one of the best commercial produced games for Linux oddly enough... but the game is NO LONGER available for Linux (beware if you buy a new one).

I own a copy (yes... OWN.. that is... I paid for it) of CrossOver (actually I own 5 licenses) and I have a purchased STEAM account through which I can play (for example) Half Life 2... with few problems on Linux. I also own Linux Doom3, Quake IV, Descent 3, etc, etc,... ALL for Linux.

Are there a gazillion games that play under Linux like there are for Windows? No.... but IMHO, you're either for Linux gaming because it's Linux, or you might as well be playing using a console (which removes Windows from the equation anyhow).

Probably the best thing to bring games to Linux IS the plethora of free games that are coming out. Some of them are pretty good and that might make Linux a more viable market for commercial games. I will say that UT2004 was a game done right for Linux. Loved to see more of that. It's worth the money.
