    if u want to see someone who's addicted to news .. then look at the fp posts on \. these ppl just sit there and wait for a story to come up so that they can get a fp ;-)

    But seriously the graphic images of the attack that are being shown repeatedly can have a deep psychological effect on the ppl. watching it again and again (u can't help but watch!) can make a deep impression on your psyche and can even lead to extreme emotions and even depression.

    The only solution is to talk about it ! even if no one knows the answers .. just talking about the problem can be of great help.

    this is not that simple. there have been cases in the past when the passengers had to take control of the cockpit to land the plane .. pilots are also human beings.

    But your second idea is really neat. However it must be used with the first to avoid misuse !

    The FAA is making a lot of changes in the security arrangement. But i'm afraid these may not be enough. All they're doing is what ppl are calling "super security measures" .. which'll lead to more waiting time in the airports ... no curb side check in etc etc. But i feel these will be short term. Soon after a year or so .. ppl will become complacent again. What is needed is a long term policy to prevent such attacks. None of the measures they are taking could've prevented the hijacking if they were in place.

    we've seen this happen many times in past. Extra security measures right after a crisis which begin to wane out soon. This had happened in India too.. when pakistani terrorists had hijacked a indian airlines flight and took it to afghanistan, there was unprecedented security at airports. but this soon waned out. This clearly is a much bigger tragedy but i'm afraid the reaction will be the same.

    we should seriously consider having armed air marshells on every fligt .. armed with maybe not regular guns but something which'll not harm an aircraft if fired.

    People should give up some of their convinences for the safety of everyone. Together we can prevent this from happening again.

    I'm sure this kind of a project will find corporate support. Even if we can't establish a human coloney on mars, we might consider having it as a mining coloney. And this probe will be the first step at that.

    But with the recent evidence of life on mars, such things will be really difficult to pull off. Imagine if we end up destroying life on mars, we'll end up destroying something which we've been searching for so long.

"The attack was carried out by our fidayeen (suicidal group) led by commander Abu Samama," Lashkar spokesman Khalid Saif said in a statement faxed to AFP.     The Boston Herald, quoting a source it did not identify, reported that authorities had seized a car at Logan airport that contained Arabic-language flight training manuals. The source said five Arab men had been identified as suspects, including a trained pilot. At least two of those men flew to Logan on Tuesday from Portland, Maine, the Herald said.

    this is truely the biggest tragedy america has faced in the recent time. the response of the ppl of new york .. how they got together to face this was praiseworthy. But i'm critical of the other states. lot of things were shut down .. malls colleges etc .. this should not happen. cuz this is what those terrorists want .. they want to take away our freedom .. we should not let them win. The country is and will be vunerable to such suicuide attacks .. it;s very difficult to gaurd against someone who's willing to give his life. But we shouldn't become scared and stop everything. Soon as the authorities tell us that its safe .. we should get back to work.... like what the congress did tonight

    this is a time that the whole country should stand behind NY as they embark on a herculean task of reconstructing and evacuating. but that doesn't mean the rest of the country should stop. they should go on.

    Since the virus runs as the user who executed it, the chances of it causing havoc on a web server (like code red did) are minimal. Even on a normal linux box, the admin will be smart enough not to run an email attachment (it's not as simple as double clicking to run it) and if some "dumb" user runs it then it's no big deal. The systems isn't comprimised.

    But this could be a big issue when linux is used in offices (where the "dumb" people work) not everyone is a *nix guru.

    I don't think that this virus has any potential to be a threat because Linux users are generally smart enough to not run every program that they get sent to them.

    Well if you're aiming at getting linux to the desktops then you're clearly aiming to get a good userbase of such "dumb" people. Those who come from a M$ background might be used to running email attachments (probably even cribbing on why can't it run automatically) So such trojans can cause a havoc and scare away such users.

    but even if you do this ,,, you cannot remove IE from a windows machine can you.
    and besides anyone can goto google.com and type in the URL and get a hyperlink to it in one second (or write the link in a file)
    So have a linux box as your proxy server, run squid proxy with squidguard and you should be done.

    I think you can use Squidguard for this purpose. I'm not sure but they've wildcard support so you can configure the filter based on that.

    However in my opinion it would be difficult to pick out those handful of useful .com, .net, and .org domains. Cuz there are many more than just a handful. However you can use the available blacklist database available from squidguard's site to do the blocking.

    how do they conduct human trials. the article says that it is a vaccine. so it prevents u from getting aids ... it was fine with monkeys .. you could give them the vaccine and then inject them with HIV to see if they develop aids, but clearly you cannot do this on humans.

    Am i missing something here, I am no biology/med expert but was just wondering about this. Or is it that you test it on someone who's in early stages of aids .. i dunno if they tested that on monkeys .. anyone has more info on this

    Yes the effect may not be the same, but that's what the human testing is aimed at finding out. This has been the case with many vaccines in the past. Just because it has different reaction on humans and animals doesn't really mean that it won't be effective in humans.
    But that's a question only human testing can answer.

    heck i've worked and now am back in school (not forced but on my free will)... i find working too restraining .. you gotta code what you are told to code .. i find research more interesting (you get paid to do what you want) .. so this isn't a bad deal for thee dot-commers .. well they had their fun (and $$) now time to get down and get some serious work done besides making web pages ( not that its not a serious one .. but not for some coding guru )

    microsoft research has done some really good work in the field of Bayesian Networks (besides other things). How they use it is a different thing. But besides the paperclip there are many other applications of bayesian networks. People at the Microsoft research have applied bayesina learning to developing systems for medical diagnosis, fault detection to name a few.
    Personally I'm not a big MS fan, but the work they do at Microsoft research is great.

    No MIT is not a federally funded university.

    Ofcourse there are some projects which get federal grant but not all and so it also has the right to patent stuff like any other research institute

    you should never be lenient with these money hungry corporations. MIT should go for getting an injuction and get them to licence under their terms and make them pay big $$ or better still stop them from manufacturing (that'll hurt them really bad) cuz if they don't then they'll be setting a bad precedent and everyone will start taking the educational institutes for granted.
    MIT has devoted time and money into this research.. no one should be allowed to use it for free just cuz they're big and rich.

    to restore the Art Deco charm of the skyscraper as they convert it from office space to residential condominiums

    then what's the point in competing with the downtown lighting .. just turn it down a bit .. 7 billion candlepower is a gross waste of energy and ofcourse they need to adjust their focus so as not to get into other peoples homes.

    USA should be doing this. this could be a big business. the plan looks pretty feasible (not sure of the numbers though) but there are many ppl out there who're ready to pay huge amounts of money for a visit to the stars.
    Instead of depending on the govt for grants, NASA should also start a commercial wing to cater to space tourists and use the profits for further exploration. This way they won't have to stall or cancel their projects just cuz the govt doesn't like it or doesn't want to fund it.

    allright 2 months may be enough for mice but whats needed is to know if can humans reproduce in low gravity and what effect does it have on babies to grow up in low gravity. and humans take long time to grow and all .. so does the 2 month study on mice and other animals scale up to years for humans ?
    But the concept is good .. and kindof essential before u start planning mars settlements.
