    a quote from the article:
"Music creators have the right to protect their property from theft, just like owners of any other property," Sherman said. "Motion picture studios and software and video game publishers have protected their works for years, and no one has even (thought) to claim that doing so was inappropriate, let alone unlawful."

the RIAA needs to understand that the suit is about the flaw in the security measure itself, not the artist(s) right to protect property.

a highschool teacher of mine once told me that "one's right ends when it impedes on another". the CD's security measure impedes on consumer's right to back up and fair use. hence the legitimacy of the lawsuit.

"Just like Outlook, the program you deride for its ubiquity, a huge, huge number of jpegs are viewed through the Microsoft libraries. If a hole was discovered in that library, it could be used as a vector for viruses.

if that was the case, microsoft's image library would be a "sleeper" virus and "infected" images would be the key.

i knew m$ was up to something... jokes...

seriously, though, if that was the case, it would seem that whoever wrote the library wasn't sensible enough as to give image parsers permission or even the possibility that the library could be a "vector" for virii.

overall, it's unusual for an image file, data that's only parsed and not executed would somehow be able to execute code and do malicious things.

"Maybe bnetd was invented so people with pirated copies of the game could play it without being hassled by the BattleNet servers?!"
    i disagree with you, completely.

bnetd was created so that a "dedicated" server could be feasable and I'm sure bnetd would have checked for keys if battle.net gave them permission to have access to information. getting into solutions between battle.net and bnetd, well that's a religious war [i'm not ready to fight].

out of what seems right now as a minority, I _WILL_ boycott this game. as a gamer, i'll be disappointed - i've been anticipating this game. I guess i'll have to settle by watching my friends play. but as a coder, as an advocate of free software, i find it very difficult to support those who squashed the wrong guy.
