Geez, if you want an iBook just buy one. Denying yourself the computer you want isn't going to hurt Al Gore any, you would just be punishing yourself. I'm sure every company must have employees whose politics you don't approve, so I'd be careful about adopting that as a standard for doing business. It would save you a lot of money, though.:-)
Anyone juvenile enough to take offense at Sun for not 'sticking up' for Linux enough probably doesn't command any sort of budget with which to purchase Sun products anyway. I'd say they've got nothing to worry about.
Nice try. I own shares in an S&P 500 index fund. Since I'm part owner of all of those companies, does that make them 'sisters' and prove that they are in collusion for nefarious purposes?
Your number for the QT 'tax' (LOL) sounds wrong, I've always heard $1500. Anyway, why would people involved in Free Software give a damn about that? If you write GPLed code you can use it for free.
I can think of plenty of times I've pasted text with style info and wanted it that way. Windows and Mac OS generally give you the option to paste with or without formatting (I think it's application dependent). X only appears to let you do it without, I guess just one more example of it's vaunted flexibility. Why is it that whenever someone points out something that's difficult or impossible to do with Linux the response inevitably is "Only an idiot would want to do that anyway!" Can't you guys admit even slight imperfections? It's ridiculous.
Gee, I thought the main problem was that the country is in a recession and neither businesses nor consumers feel like spending much money on computers. Come to find out, it's really all Microsoft's fault!
Wow, you can cut and paste text? I assume that preserves all font/style/size information, right? What if there's a graphic embedded in the text, does that come along for the ride?
Are you sure? I'd be quite surprised if pdflatex can handle that. Including EPS files just puts a 'special' in the DVI, which is then only handled by dvips. It seems likely to me that METAPOST works the same way.
As for journals and METAFONT, you can use TeX just fine without it (I do all the time, with pdflatex). Knock off the bogus appeals to authority, just because some old people are stuck in their ways doesn't prove anything.
What else would you patent but an idea? That's the whole point! Specific implementations are covered by trademarks and copyrights. I think patents are great. Sure the PTO could do better in weeding out obvious ideas, but patent protection gives the little guy with a good idea a fighting chance against huge companies, who would otherwise just copy his product.
METAFONT may have been nice in its day, but it's garbage now. Embedding bitmapped fonts into your postscript documents means that they can't be easily translated into other formats, i.e. PDF. Use pdflatex for your documents and stay the hell away from junk like METAPOST.
The original message specified "no extra hardware". I agree that remote mounts would work fine but that would require buying the optional network interface.
Without any extra hardware there'd be no place to save your programs, or space to use for VM or compiler temporary files. It seems like it'd be pretty tough to do any development without a hard drive.
The exploit email should have been enclosed in a long cylinder instead of a sphere. That would have made the scene where it went into the open sendmail port a LOT more compelling. Maybe it'll make the director's cut...
It's just part of the mock rivalry, Americans make lots of Canadian jokes too. Because we're really so alike it's funny to exaggerate the differences and pretend to be bitter enemies. I work with a Canadian guy and we go back and forth like this all the time. Lighten up a bit.
Yeah, he really embarrassed himself there. I especially liked how he claimed that Iraq is aiding Al Queda, when in fact the Iraqi government is specifically listed on Al Queda's list of secular Arab governments that must be destroyed. How ridiculous can you get?
I'm sure they'll come up with all sorts of stories about WMD's, just like all those stories about mass graves in Kosovo. Of course, after the need for them had passed nobody was ever able to locate any...
Are you sure about that? I know of Icarus verilog which is free and can be used to generate netlists. However, are there any free/cheap place-and-route or bitfile generation packages around? We use Synopsis in the project I work on and I'm sure it wasn't cheap enough to include with the C-ONE.
You still have to clock the data into and out of the chip because of limited pincount. In that sense an FPGA is no less serial on FFTs than a CPU, right?
Why would they throw a temper tantrum? Because people want to watch the TV shows and movies that they are broadcasting over the air specifically for that purpose? I don't get it.
We've got the War on Drugs and the War on Terror, can we please have a War on Crappy-Hard-Rock-Bands? At least then something good will come from this tragedy. Suggested first target: Creed.
Are you the Tom Hudson who wrote Spectrum 512 for the Atari ST? I'm pretty sure you're not - judging by your postings you weren't even born then - but I just thought I'd ask anyway.

Perhaps it's because you are wrong? Salon doesn't require any registration.

It's called 'Objectivity'. Read about it at objectivity.com.

BTW: you can code? Wow, you are so 1337!

I hear that it's also correct to call it 'High DefiGNUtion TV'. Credit where credit is due you know...
This isn't 'Interesting', it's stupid. In what way would you need to circumvent encryption to receive over-the air TV broadcasts?

If I was doing a security review the very first thing I'd do is audit all of the comments in the code for accuracy. Safety first!

Geez, simple answers to questions are now astroturfing? Or are you really just jealous of people who have jobs and can afford decent computers?
