>> Have their been any ransomware attacks on the Linux desktop?
Two things:
1) Why on earth would someone take the time to develop ransomware on "desktop" Linux?
2) Anyone running a Linux desktop with a 10 year old version of their OS (like XP) is likely just as open to attack.
Here in Florida, my kid's schools have had plenty of racial diversity. What they lack is men. Growing up some of my favorite teachers were guys, but now there seem to be almost no male teachers.
...coding ISN'T cool. It can be fun, rewarding, and it can pay the bills, but there is very little that is cool about programming. If you have a group of people picking their future careers simply using the "is it cool" filter, then you can except to get very few programmers out of that group.
...none of the EU countries monitor communications, right?
This is completely an example of misdirection. "Look over there!!! Bad NSA!!! Bad US spy agencies!!"
Completely agree... I'm 37 and I've pretty much always had a watch on my wrist. And both of my kids (6 and 3) have watches that THEY asked for. Don't know, it seems like a (stupid) non-issue to me.
I truly think a large part of the issue here is that "Blu-Ray" is a horrible HORRIBLE name. The name HD-DVD is alliterative and logical.
HD-DVD "sounds" like the logical upgrade to the DVD, while "Blu-Ray" sounds like a Star Wars weapon.
My guess (based on some other articles a few months back) is that they are illegal due to a lack of GAS TAX REVENUE. Think about it, a large percentage of our road infrastructure is paid for by gasoline taxes. If cars don't require gas, where is the money to fix the roads coming from?
Actually the marketplace is free (it only needs a "sliver" membership):
"Xbox 360 gamers in the U.S. can access Xbox Live Marketplace with a free Xbox Live Silver subscription or a paid Xbox Live Gold subscription and a broadband connection. Pricing is competitive and will vary based on format, media type and whether the content is a new release movie or a classic feature film." http://www.xbox.com/en-US/community/news/2006/1106 -moviestv.htm
..and there are 3rd party tools that allow non-WMVs to stream.

I would look into resin 3D printers like: http://formlabs.com/products/3...
I wish they would add Intel Edison support.

What world do you live in?

I can buy a Blu-Ray PLAYER and the disc for less than it costs my family of 4 to see a 3D movie with pop-corn and drinks.
Rich kids tend to have higher test scores...
Will someone please think of the poor millionaire ball players? It's just not fair!

Yup...
I understand this is Slashdot, but I find the the lack of a Windows client for a project like this pretty ridiculous.
It's 2013, can we please stop using "cyber" now?
Generally, the only people who profit from the class action suits are the lawyers.
So now what we really need is a droid who understands the binary language of moisture vaporators.
Unfortunately, if you asked "WHY???" to the soccer moms involved that's likely what you'd hear.
My thoughts exactly unless I'm missing something.
Hollywood is trying to kill Netflix as quickly as they can. Sometimes I think they would prefer us all to just use torrents.
Basically, this will drive people to use Redbox for disc-based movies and NetFlix for screaming.

.... and you'll be a happier person.
