I can pick up a 17" monitor for around $250, and a keyboard and mouse certainly wont cost me $195. Remember that these systems are designed for switchers, people who will already have those things.

The incident you are referring to was the Airbus A330 Air Transit flight TS236 from Toronto to Lisbon, 24th August 2001. At 1,500 miles from the coast of Portugal, the onboard management systems reported a loss of fuel flow to the right engine, and as normal procedure the crew cross pumped fuel over to it from the left engines feeder pump. Noone realised that it was a cracked fuel pipe that was leaking all the fuel out.

As the Azores were only 135miles away, the crew diverted the aircraft to make an emergancy landing. 8 minutes later, the right hand engine failed due to fuel starvation, then 7 minutes after that the left engine failed also due to fuel starvation. The captain of the aircraft managed a dead stick approach to the military airstrip on Terceira, Azores from 33,000 feet. The crew managed to glide the aircraft for 18 minutes to touchdown, the only damage being all the tyres on the main undercarraige bursting on landing.

This has been, and remains to be, the longest glide time for a wide bodied aircraft.

You have a point, unless they teamed up with Dell etc to produce a set number of 'standard' x86 systems and target OSX for that? Im just postulating here, we all know they wont actually do anything about OSX on any other platform. I disagree with you when you say 'Im not sure if the Linux Windows translation/emulation is up to that yet' and cite it as a issue if OSX wanted to do it, remember that a company the size of Apple can throw a LOT of money and time at something it really wanted, and Windows emulation really wouldnt be an issue if Apple wanted it.

I 'switched' to OSX jsut before Christmas with a purchase of an iBook. I then bought a Mac Mini as soon as they became available in stores here in the UK (I managed to walk into a retailer and pick my mac mini up 3 days before my colleague received his preorder from Apple).

Theres been one single app that I cant replace from Windows. DVDShrink. No other App does what it does 100% (Rip, Compress to mpeg2 and burn if needed, but I prefer to rip, compress to 50% mpeg2 and have it output each title as a single vob - something nothing on OSX has been able to replicate).

Everything else I have either replaced with the MacOSX version of the same app, or replaced with a better third party app. Its fantastic, I certainly wont be moving back!

Check out how much money they are making selling $500 machines. The Mac Mini is hugely successful, and the cost of the hardware must be at least 80% of the cost of the machine, so they must be bundling the OS 'free' as such. IF they sold OSX for $200 for x86, it would fly off the shelf and pretty much be 99% profit.

Do you (this is more aimed at the others who have moderated me or replied to me negatively) feel that someone that makes the office smell strongly, either smoking, body odor, cologne or whatever should be allowed to influence that client negatively? There are programs out there that wrap commandline programs (FFmpegx for OSX - wraps ffmpeg, mpeg2enc, mplayer and mencoder to compress video and audio files using a well built UI) without ever being affected by their licenses. Why should libraries be any different? Adding a UI is a nontrivial matter.

    Picked from the GPLv2 itself:

Each version is given a distinguishing version number. If the Program does not specify a version number of this License, you may choose any version ever published by the Free Software Foundation. (Section 9, Paragraph 2)

Oh, and Ive worked with smokers in the past, it wasnt just this guy. They all stink after a cigarette. The smokers themselves dont notice it, because they are used to it, but to nonsmokers, you can always tell if someone smokes just by inhaling as someone walks by.

I side with the employers on this. Smoking is disgusting, and it does harm those people who dont smoke in the office. Smokers smell, even if they take steps to mitigate the stale smoke smell - and many dont.

I currently work in an office which had a single smoker until he gave up recently. Every time he popped out for a cigarette he came back stinking, several of us had to leave the office for a couple of minutes because we just cant physically stand it.

You wouldnt accept poor personal hygiene, you wouldnt accept alcohol intake during work hours, so why accept what is just another addiction?
