That's because eBay and Amazon lately have been top bidders for the George Bush "keyword," offering 11 cents and 10 cents, respectively, for each click-through a search engine delivers.
So by clicking on these repetedly we can cost eBay and Amazon loads of money!! However doing so supports the search engines whom have sold search placements....
To click, or not to click, that is the question. eBay Amazon

I wonder if the success of Google could be driving the other search engines under. Using payed placements is as about as good a way as any to shoot yourself in the foot. The largest users of search engines are likely techies like us who would not only realize that often the good sites are the ones that wouldn't have the money to pay for good placements but these people would also be the ones most likely to object to being fed information like this on a moral point. Does anyone know how AltaVista's been doing since they started accepting money for placements? This move strikes me as more a move of desperation than anything else.
So who broke the law when your computer crashes every five minutes causing you to lose large amounts of productive time (time=money). Besides you're never going to be able to effectively catch all the crackers. The responsibilty lies with the software company to defeat them by making their software secure. Notice I said responsibility, not liability, unless a distributor explicitly states that their system is COMPLETELY secure there is still a possibility for holes. The moment we make companies liable for security holes you can expect half of them to go out of buisness right off the bat. The potential suits are simply way too costly
Actually I remember a case where an American living on the border won a Canadian lottery. He moved to Canada to avoid being taxed, however years later he decided to visit some of his freinds back in the US, when he got to the border he was arrested and sued by the IRS for something like 3 million dollars.
I wonder if the same argument would apply to someone collecting donations on the street. While it is likely that these people are not collecting unemployment how do they define "earning money". On the same note would gambling also be considered "earning money", I know in Canada winnings are not taxable yet there are some professional gamblers that Revenue Canada is attempting to tax due to the fact they consider it a job.
" The writer is chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association."
Does this mean he IS DIRECTLY affiliated with the MPAA? While they undoubtedly think along the same lines this doesn't necessarily mean they are the same nor have the same strategies to get to their goals. Who knows their article may interfere with some horrible master plan the MPAA has in store for us and they are screaming in agony as we speak contemplating a quick and plainless death rather than face the information anarchy that will surly follow!!!
You would be charged one way or another sooner or later, the money has to come from somewhere, just now the people being charged are a little more likely to be the responsible ones. They're just hairline fracturing a few eggs before they get started on their omlete.
Keep in mind that the US is NOT the ONLY country in the world with internet access. I don't have any figure but I would not at all be surprised if a substancial amount of that traffic originated outside of the US to servers outside of the US. Also so keep in mind that the large proportion of data comprising isn't surprising cosidering the fact that movies are the largest files being downloaded on a regular basis, It would only take a few movies compared to hundreds of regular downloads to take up a substancial majority of the bandwidth.
I clicked on the link to the "scenic venue!", and it took 5 minutes to get there!! Damm that was a long trip! I'd rather save the time and just look at some of the pics I have on my desktop or find something or my network if I was feeling adventurous.
Although I don't know for sure I've heard that in some places in Europe a company is responsible for paying for the recycling of the packaging from their products (i.e. McDonalds held responsible for the piles of styrofoam boxes and cups on the sides of the highway).
"And that, my friends, is why AMD is well on its way to winning the war."
I bought my computer with a 1.2Ghz Athalon in September. At that point about 1/3 of the computers in stock were AMD. Since about a month after that I've been in that and several other computer stores, multiple times and NOT ONCE have I seen a computer with an AMD chip. I'm sure the companies will only be too happy to oblige when you order (as I ended up doing with mine) but I've stopped seeing them in the stores. Could this have something to do with the fact that I'm in Canada, some bizarre business decision on AMD's part or perhaps we just like intel a lot more? Or is this happening generally in computer stores? If I recall this sudden shift away from AMD happened around the time of the release of the P4s. Don't underestimate the publics willingness to succumb to hype and a feeling of security. Most people will gladly hand over the extra one or two hundred to make sure their two grand machine can surf the net and doesn't explode.
Unfortunately, checking their website shows that only business machines will have a Linux option; home machines are still WinXP only."
And they'll likely stay that way, remember back a while on/., this story (I sure I remember a more recent and more applicable one shortly after the death of BeOs but I couldn't find it anywhere. Either way HP does not have the option of selling a duel boot machine with linux and windows due to their agreement with M$. Acorrdingly the only way to sell a home machine with linux is to sell it with only linux. I suspect that most users who are good enough to use only linux will probably build their own machines in the first place.
I was about to have a good nights sleep but then I saw this story and by the time I posted this comment it was past 2:30 and the worries about the hazardous effects to my health of sleeping in will keep me up all night so I won't get any sleep. Thanks/. for keeping my health at heart!
The story went up ~5 minutes ago and I can't get anything, surly it can't have been/.ed this quickly? I would have really liked to see what kind of measures they would take to house extraterrestrial samples. How would you be able to remove all microbes from the air in a lab? Would you even use air, just keep it in a vacuum. That still leaves the problem of microbs on the equipment and and lab environment. They have experience keeping things in with viral labs but I don't think it's entirly applicable to this situation where you'd have to keep things out. All I can think of is shortly after building it roasting the entire lab to destroy every last trace of life than doing the same thing to the lab suits when coming in, which would of course have to be fire proof AND impermeable to moisture, anything come to mind? Are there any other more practical ways to effectivly destroy all cellular matter in an environment?
What is humanity? There are numerous vastly distinct cultures all over the world and I can't think of a general definition for humanity. If you wanted to have the new world adapt your culture you need to teach it to them through the same computers and machines that keep them alive. If you think about it it's actually a very nice situation. We would have the ability to start "humanity" over again WITHOUT all of the baggage we've been carrying over the millenia. We only have to tell them what they should know. Teach them science and the some of arts (ones which will not inspire hatred), sure many great works will be lost to this new civilization but so will the concepts of racisism and much hatred. We could infact generate a utopia! Think about it, why did communism fail? Because humanity in its present form is by default lazy and corrupt, any system that assumes otherwise such as communism will inevitably fail. But what if we could start from scratch? Teach these new humans to be caring, compassionate, understanding, hard-working, yes it would be very diffucult to design a system that would raise the new children with those values but without outside influences it may be possible. Once we do get that first generation of rolemodel humans they may very well be able to inspire their progeny to carry on the tradition and we may end up with a utopia after all.
I don't see their problem with shipping half a dozen or more CDs. When I got my computer it came with 6 cds just for MS worksuite (none of which I use since I got staroffice;). Cds are much cheaper than hard drive space and i'd rather just have them give me a bunch of image files and rip the cds off that. I wonder if the recovery cds could be used to pirate windows XP, if so I suspect that is the real reason for their reluctance.
I still think the easiest way to spread the human race to other stars in a Van Neuman machine. It's a self-replicating machine that when it finds a good planet will first terraform it that clone humans to live on it (I may be confusing it with something else but I think I got the basics right). This would not only be drastically cheaper and more practical it holds much more potential for the spread of the human race. It also avoids finding a way to keep a bunch of people occupied for several decades.
Dr. Daniel Jackson speaks 23 languages, wears glasses, suffers from allergies, and occasionally launches into tedious Spock-like discourses on obscure academic subjects. But women have decided that the quirky character, and the actor who plays him, are all the more appealing for it.
more than 1,000 protests had been phoned into Cohen's office.

Sorry, I didn't read the article first and didn't realize it was just office he copied.
Why didn't he just get the upgrade CD and he'd have the whole system for less risk and only $19.95!!

We also plan a detection system that will automatically stop the vehicle if there is an obstacle in the guideway.
I just hope it doesn't run on embedded windows!
