Just one more thing to worry about in the security world. As is the 1GB email mongers aren't bad enough. Now UNIX Admins will be trash collectors too.

"Could everyone delete some files? We're running out of space on the server. This would include your trashcans as well."

    Response:
"Doesn't the janitorial staff take care of that?"

Unix has entered the world of the clueless.

Don't know if this is still true, but...

MS's backup environment was all UNIX based. They hired a HUGE storage services company to design/install/implement backups for them on Win2k servers with Veritas Netbackup.

This all happened AFTER the UNIX news was leaked.

Imagine being a UNIX Admin working for Microsoft? Scary thought.

Hmmmm, should this simulation be scheduled?

Now ask the people who would normally be in charge of IT (usually a CFO, CIO, or COO) at the director/exec level to fix the problem propperly.

The checkbook for contractor/vendor/consulting dollars will probably fly open.

IT is the nervous system of any company. You know you've got one somewhere, but unless you get hurt in a major way, you'll never know it's there.

Sales of Linux distros will go through the roof, becuase people won't want to pay for the bandwidth to download them.

  8. Go to college, you'll thank yourself at 30 on System Administrators - College or Career? · · Score: 1

Go to college. Too many people say that High School is the best time of your life. They lied. If you GO AWAY to college (read: out of Mom and Dad's reach), you will be the better person for it.

Earning a BS or BA degree will show a prospective employer that you can set goals for yourself and see something through to the end.

Generally hiring managers are looking for the better employee. I know if I had to chose between a college grad and a HS grad with the same skills, I'd take the college grad in a heartbeat.

College will teach you things you can't learn on the job.

You're 18, you think you know everything, and you want some serious money. I know...I was there.

The truth of the matter is, you don't know shit about shit and you NEED to go to college and finish growing up. The world and your career will thank you for it later in your life.

People who go for the quick gain end up paying in the long run.

My hat's off to you for wanting to go to college. Pick whichever degree program interests you more. You have to get your degree for you, not for your job or someone else. If you're not interested in the material, you probably won't do well.

I'm a CS grad personally, and I'll tell you that the MIS courses are boring as hell to me, and I'm glad I made this descision, becuase it was the right one for me.

I only hope that our 19/20 year old friend is reading this thread with his "five years of inudstry experience", he should have the smarts to go to college as well.

    Good luck to you.

  14. Stop your whining on Handling Discrimination in the IT Workplace? · · Score: 1

    Four things...

    1) Be thankful you have a job that gets you a paycheck right now. There are so many unemployed IT people right now and you should be making love to that paycheck you get on a regular basis.

    2) Go get yourself a degree. Having a college education speaks volumes in a bad economy. If you go out looking for a new job, odds are you will lose out to someone that just got or has a degree. Even if you go part time, it shows you are trying to improve yourself.

    3) Your biggest friend right now is your manager. If he's telling you these things, he's either doing it as a tactic to get you to move on or he really likes you and is trying to help. If it comes down to court, make sure you have him as a witness.

    4) Your IT Director is a prick. Anyone who would be trying to toss someone onto the street today has no conscience. I will say that most of the IT Directors I have met in my life are nothing more than total gutless pricks. You may find the jewel in the sand one day, but not today it seems. They don't know anything, but think they know everything. Being an IT Director is just a place to be to get you out of the way so the grunts and managers can get real work done.
My advice to you is to get out while the going is good, but remember...YOU ARE ONLY 20 YEARS OLD. You DO NOT have 5 years of industry experice. I'm 31 and I have 12 years under my belt, becuase I worked while I was in college.

Get yourself a new job that has Tuition reembursment as a benny and go get your Bachelors degree. There are too many little snots out there, like yourself, without degrees. You think you know it all, but in fact, you know nothing. Your generation will one day be IT Directors. I just hope they know something when they get there, becuase you'll be having my generation of VPs hiring/promoting you.

    In summary:

    - Thank your lucky stars you have a paycheck
    - Get a new job with Tuition as a perk and get a degree
    - Trust your manager, for information only
    - Most IT Directors are pricks
    - You only have about 1-2 years of experience, not 5
    - Don't carry this through your career...learn from it
    - Lastly..."He who has the paper, WINS!!!" Right now, your Director has the paper and you don't.

    Go get it.

You can tell everyone for this silly notion is some money grubbing bean counter that's been using the internet since the boom in the early 90's or less.

Everyone that's not favoring this is an internet fossil like myself and remembers what the internet was like before our first spammer friends (The Green Card Lawyers). Hold up your 'Spamming the Globe" coffee mugs everyone.

My point is that I pay enough $$ to my ISP, why do I want to pay more $$ to content providers? I would easilly spend an additional $40 on slashdot, ESPN, and Fantasy Sports a month...easilly.

What if you are a job seeker? Are you going to have to pay a penny a page to look for a new job? Yeah...please. In this bad economy, the unemployed would be shelling out insane amounts to find work.

This model doesn't work, and the internet will become what most other cool things is this country have become....

FOR THE OBSENELY RICH & ELITE.

Gates will get his only wet dream come true. It won't be the internet anymore. It will be Gatesworld or Micronet or something equally as disgusting. I can hear Robin Leach now. "The internet. Once for the average Joe on the corner, but nowwwww it's the same crap but costs you 10 times as much."

One cent a page indeed...give me a break.

An entry level helpdesk job is the place to start. Certifications are nice, but don't get one to get one. Learn the material. Good UNIX people can spot the textbook Certs a mile away. Most of the time you wont find a person with UNIX certs and an MCSE.

They are usually HPC (High Paid Consultants) or a textbook weenie.
