  1. All these thoughts are nice, but.... on Green buildings, Green Server Farms? · · Score: 1

Has anyone actually considered the unthinkable thought in this day and age of the on demand world?

    Shut them off...

I'd like to see some numbers on the amount of power and natural resources wasted because we all have to have computers up 7x24x365. Even if no one is actively using the resources or has a chance of using them. I'm sure these numbers would be both interesting and staggering. I'm sure that the US would be listed as the worst offender in this category as well.

Since Y2K, I've worked for 4 different companies.

All of these companies had some form of lights out time for a good portion of their computing assets. How much electricity are we wasting by just leaving our office desktop and server equipment on and available 7x24?

Could companies institute policies of once an asset is backed up in the evening that it powers down until just before the workday begins? This could be one of those instances where the phrase "every little bit helps" could be applied.

Obviously this would not be applicable for internet services like email or web, but if your Customer Services organization doesn't operate between 11pm and 8am, what's the point of the application hardware being operational beyond backing up the resource?

Does anyone have any thoughts along these lines?

  3. Agreeing with the masses. on When Would You Accept DRM? · · Score: 1

DRM in any form is totally silly. Even if I'm renting something. The only thing that's in that price range that I would ever want to rent is beer.

I've watched various people and organizatinos over the past 8 years attempt to tame the internet and all things digital to be under their way of control. They realized eventually and gave up. The latest candidates out there trying now, IMHO, are Bill Gates, the RIAA, and MPAA.

As long as DRM hurts my rights as a consumer of goods and services, I'm not interested. When I purchase something, I want to own it without restriction. The ability for something to play on up to 3 systems "forever" does not work with the consumer model. Systems fail, get reinstalled, and upgraded. This breaks the DRM and you usually left with the SOL scenario.

  5. Copyright protection my ass.... on Court Says FCC Out-of-Bounds With Digital TV · · Score: 5, Insightful
The FCC has said copyright protections are needed to help speed the adoption of digital television.

Copyright protection will CERTAINLY NOT help speed adoption to DTV. Ceasing production of analog 4:3 sets and only selling DTV sets and thus lowering costs for DTV sets will though.

Some people, myself included, just can't see spending that amount of money on a TV set that doesn't provide long term dollar investment like an analog set does. Maybe if they only manufactured the DTV sets, the consumer would get better quality goods for their hard earned dollar???

  7. It all comes down to one thing.... on US Still Dithering Over Analog-Digital TV Conversion · · Score: 1

This is a very simple solution to solve, IMHO anyway.

It should have been made very clear that TV makers need to stop making analog TV sets some time ago and focus on making DTV sets and converters.

I myself enjoy watching what I watch on television, and would love to see it in digital, however, I can not justify in my mind paying that much moola for a television set that will not outlast my washer and dryer. I have friends that have purchased good quality DTV units and have spent another small fortune in repairs.

Stop worrying about what we have today. Focus on tomorrow and help the manufacurers get there.

A convenient appearance by a roofing contractor closes the debate and puts it all into perspective for the viewer.

We're talking about industries like the RIAA and the MPAA which operate under a specific business model. This business model has been in place for at least the past 50 years. Along comes a concept of the Internet and file swapping which is forcing these industries to rethink their business model.

The problem is...they won't change their model. People are very frightened of change, and the Entertainment industry has evolved from lots of smaller labels and movie makers that were interested in putting out good product to these HUGE MEDIA JUGGERNAUTS that are only interested in the almighty dollar/franc/pound/etc...

If you can get them to change the business model and prove it works (Gee, didn't Apple just do that?), they'll come along for the ride. Until then, they'll continue to think we're all crooks.

To me, this means that I won't have to listen to people bitching about how they took a desktop job and don't get to work on any servers. I won't have to hear, "I worked on this, that, and the other thing" and the words 'but you don't know what cut and awk do' ring in my head.

Sorry, I'm venting because these are the folks that are kicking and screaming to stay in IT, but they don't really belong in IT and the "next big thing" isn't here yet for them to hop to. There are many good IT folks out of work today, and these whining people need to make room.
