or perhaps they want to keep their @aol.com email address intact because that's what all their friends have in their contact list? many of the former aol/compuserve users i know are aware that they are always connected and don't need aol, but they just can't give up their 'prestigious' email address. people are afraid to 'give up' an email address for some unknown (to me at least) reason
i am aware that you can keep your aol/cs email address (for a ~$5/mo fee) and use pop client, but pop clients are associated with spam/junk (my fault - i set my parents and inlaws up with pop access to their broadband email account)
my dad was pissed once i discovered the joys of airwarrior. $200 internet bill with $150 phone bill (connection number was a toll call) is a bad thing... before that fiasco i didn't know that we used a distance number or that cs was per hour.
a shell scrip from 30 years ago MAY run on a current/bin/sh. i don't have my o'reilly unix in a nutshell with me right now (i keep it at work), but as i recall, there's a whole section titled 'obsolete commands'. these commands may not exist on a specific system. good luck getting your shell script to work when the commands within the script are invalid.
what does this have to do with windows...

maybe i missed something, but what does connecting to a malicious network have to do with an operating system? could os x have connected to the same wireless network? how about linux? this is as much an os flaw as 'click yes to install spyware'
in other words... fix all the problems, add new functionality, but keep all the compatability for the applications that 1% of users want. you obviously don't program large applications.
as a trading engine developer/support guy for a financial firm in ny, i can't stress enough what a pain in the ass this was. the day after the nyse crash, it took hours upon hours of verifying (by hand) trades that the nyse says we were filled on that we never say (because all nyse trading lines were down).
this type of 'message flood' occurs from time to time, but not on the nyse in a while. it's generally the ecms trading otc stocks that have rouge programs blast orders in an infinite loop. when this happens to an ecm, they slow down but generally don't lose the ability to trade. the nyse, who toutes the importance of their rapists^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hspecialists because they add 'stability' to the system, was dead in the water. this crash goes to show how useless the specialists really are - without the technology working, they can do nothing. if this is the case, why not just replace them altogether with electronic trade matching?
interestingly enough, the nyse announced mere months ago that they are 'merging' with archipelago - a large ecm. perhaps this merger will be the beginning of the end of the specialists.
if you change it to the host name, the poor support guy will not be able to walk the user through the process of finding a file. "ok - double click on the EELAB4035A icon, then C:,... etc". this is particuarly bad if the user doesn't know the hostname of the machine they're sitting in front of (ie: typical user).
1. Hardware - graduated with electrical and computer engineering degree 2. Software - currently programming for a financial firm 3. Get Married/Girlfriend - married 2 months after graduation
but nobody collects tickets on the ny subway. you simply swipe your metrocard to enter the terminal. once you've paid to get into the first terminal, you can generally transfer from train to train - so $2 can get me from north bronx (near my grandmother's house) to south brooklyn (my appt) in 3-5 free transfers (depending on time of day/week). of course with a monthly card, you pay $76 for unlimited rides (7-8 minute minimum wait between swipes though). until a month and a half ago, the monthly cost $70.
10. Will Google be coming out with more food products?
As a rule, Google doesn't comment on future product releases, but...let's just say for now that a cool, refreshing drink isn't complete without, oh, say, chips and dip, is it?
you see only 3 processes running in windows?impressive considering you will always have a 'system idle process', 'system', 'explorer.exe', and a few 'svchost.exe' - not to mention the fact that 'taskmgr.exe' has to be running in order to see any of this. would you like me to explain the difference between the 'applications' and 'processes' tabs?
i would argue that you are completely clueless based on your statement.
we use solaris and sybase in a financial environment, and we've been doing it for over a dozen years now. i thought this was pretty typical on wall street...
in the first place, i guess your humor meter need to be repaired. but since you mention it...
"this just in - iraqi civilian death toll caused by american invasion now officially 0. this has been confirmed by slashdot poster, operagost."
perhaps the reason "we don't do body counts" is that there is no one dead? you danmed detached americans think that because it's 10,000 miles away it's not real. time to put down the comics and read the rest or the newspaper asshat.

does this mean that i can't clean up the spywa^H^H^H^H^Hsoftware on my wife's machine for her?
you slashfolks should make up your minds... does a windows distribution contain a "handful" of programs? or do they bundle too many programs? please clarify

user idiocy is not an os flaw. end of story.

incorrect. i'm on a prop trading floor (but we hired a small sales team last year)

or all 3 like i did -
1. Hardware - graduated with electrical and computer engineering degree
2. Software - currently programming for a financial firm
3. Get Married/Girlfriend - married 2 months after graduation
why limit yourself to just one or 2?

don't you mean the "VI Vs emacs" thing?

it may be the most unhealthy part of our society, but is certianly not as unhealthy as starving because you can't afford food...
even a TI-82 calculator can have a 9 year uptime given enough power
my ti83 can beat that any day. and this week alone, my ti89 has an uptime of 15 years!

this is where the concept of a mutex comes into play. you use globals in threaded apps without a mutex? remind me not to hire you any time soon...

How many internal organs of Iraqis have we sold on the black market exactly?
exactly none. by the time we're done with them, there's no internal organs left to speak of
i liked this paragraph...
