I know this was intended as a joke, but I am so sick of people complaining about advancing standards and their old {record, tape, VHS} collection.

IF YOU DON'T LIKE BUYING THE NEW STANDARD, DON'T BUY THEM!!!!!!!!

Last time I checked you could still go to Fry's and buy a VHS player or blank audio tapes. Maybe they quit selling record players at Radio Shack but you don't have to look very hard to find a good record player either.

NOBODY and I mean NOBODY is telling you that you have to upgrade your whole collection. Sure you might have to buy a HD-DVD player to buy the latest releases, but that won't cost much (cheap DVD players are less that $60 now) and there are improvements in the standard.

People complain either way. Take television, it took decades to see any improvement in the TV standards and with the way other technology grows I am not alone in greeting the HDTV standard with a big "it's about damn time."

Now quit your whining, all of you.

  5. Using the catchphrase "weblog"... on On Collaborative Weblogs · · Score: 3, Interesting
is a bit misleading. The author is simply talking about online communities. From pages 7-8:

In theory, the organization of a group weblog is similar to the structure Hamilton was searching for. This form of weblog also falls into the general category of an online community, alongside more traditional community forms like bulletin boards and chatrooms.

In his study of decentralized mob behavior, Rheingold pursued this line of inquiry further (2002). He also highlighted Slashdot and its 300,000 members as an example ofself-organized behavior by "smart mobs" and "swarm systems," which grow to exhibit collective intelligence that is greater than the sum of their parts (Rhengold p179).Rheingold notes that the many-to-many media model found in a group weblog empowers the audience by allowing them to "create, publish, broadcast, and debate their own pointof view" in ways previously unheard of in the print and broadcast mediums. Like others before him, Rheingold was not sure if this newfound ability would provide a legitimatecounterforce to society's dominant forces, or just be a simulation of a counterforce that feels empowering but, in reality, is toothless. Nevertheless, he concluded that beforeanyone could reach such a verdict, or determine a way to alter that outcome, there is a need for more knowledge of how such technologies, and the people that use them, function today.

The author then continues to refer to Slashdot (and the others) as collaborative group weblogs without ever trying to make the distinction between a weblog and the aforementioned "online community". So as best as I can tell, the author simply likes the buzzword "weblog" and is actually studying online communities and group/thought dynamics(how's that for a buzzword?) on the web.

Well in typical /. style, I didn't actually visit the NGage website, so I have to take back what I said about attracting developers. They already have a huge mass of "fancy" games like Splinter Cell, but my marketing suggestion still stands; If they have all these (potentially) cool games, they should be more than able to make back the price of the phone with a special pricing plan and through game sales.

  7. Free? on N-Gage QD - Worth It At $99? · · Score: 4, Interesting
It seems as though, especially with the bad press/experience that was the original NGage, cellphone carriers and Nokia should be "giving away" the NGage QD. By that I mean slapping the buyer with an 18+ month contract. Or even better, the special "Elite Gamer Package" where the phone is free and you get a new game cartridge "free" every X months paid for by the higher monthly rates.

I can only assume that they are trying to make money from selling cellphone game cartridges, and in order to attract developers there has to be a large enough market. What's the easiest way to build a market? By giving out the console for free/selling at a loss. Nokia is a giant; they can probably follow the path of Microsoft and the Xbox.

No, I understand that the point of the test is to pick an encoder/codec that is good for a whole library of music, but I think that the benchmark appears to compare music quality/bitrate, which it does not. It is a guide for encoding your whole collection, not a benchmark to show the best codec quality:size.

The logical basis for tuning the VBR and CBR encoders to the same bitrate is simple: If you want to compare quality/kbps you need to do this. The whole point of audio compression (IMHO) is to get the best quality:size ratio. It is equally moronic to compare a 160kbps MP3 with a 128kbps AAC and announce that MP3/LAME is superior sound quality at ~128kbps settings.

  9. Bitrates!!! on Vorbis And Musepack Win 128kbps Multiformat Test · · Score: 1
Did anyone actually read the whole results section? Vorbis, MPC and LAME were using VBR that resulted in average bitrates higher (and in some cases much higher) than 128kbps. Go back to the results page and scroll to the third from bottom table and have a look for yourself. On the samples where there was a clear or runaway winner, the bitrate for that codec is generally higher than the average. Only AAC and WMP actually had 128kbps samples.

For example, the final sample "Waiting" the winning codec MPC was actually 153kbps, followed by LAME and Vorbis at 144 and 148kbps. Unless I don't understand his algorithm, it doesn't seem as though he is taking these bitrate differences into account

The report claims to be a 128kbps Multiformat Test, and it's really a "128kbps standard preset on our encoder" Multiformat Test which may result in higher bitrates than 128kbps. I am sure that if you gave the static bitrate codecs the same bitrate as the resulting VBR average bitrates, they would be much more competitive.

I disagree; handing out free WiFi is a great business model, it's just that the wrong business is providing it. Instead of some corporation trying to make money by setting up large networks of hotspots, local coffee shops(or even chains) should spend $60-$100 a month to get a DSL line and WiFi router (I know the Speakeasy TOS allows for this) and let the local patrons use it for free. Coffee shops and cafes are favorite places to do work and relax and making the atmosphere/conditions more desirable are well worth the cost.

Worried about freeloaders? Then change the password on the AP every day, and print it on every receipt. Seems like a great business model to increase your customer base as a cafe.

My mother who also tried the coffee immediately didn't like it because the caffeine content is much lower in the Arabica bean (most blends have Robusto(sp?) which is very high in caffeine and has a bad/bitter flavor) so she didn't get the normal buzz. (Firewire, USB2.0, digital sound out, 5.1 support, tv out etc)

As far as not being able to HDTV you're dead wrong, I've got an HDTV decoder in it which runs flawlessly (want a 40gb HD version of the superbowl? mail me a harddrive). Gaming is a no go for modern FPS, but even without using one of the 2 pci slots (riser card) the onboard video will run Half Life rather well, and most RTS (save WC3) and of course anything MAME can throw at it... Who wants to play an FPS on a TV but doesn't want a console anyway?

In short, if you think VIA has failed with their MiniItx form boards and the C3, justify that conclusion. All your complaints are either incorrect or baseless. Divx DVDs and HDTV all run beautifully on the VIA. As for gaming: the most powerful console on the market runs at less that 1 ghz and boasts a far from cutting edge graphics card so it's not lacking in power, just in development support. PC game companies aren't interested in supporting anything but bleeding edge tech, and in all likelihood people who want games on their TV will be looking to the real players in the market: Sony Nintendo and Microsoft.
