Unless you're looking at the quantum superstate of blank media (which would mean that anything that can exist on blank media would exist on it until it was observed), which would further enrage the RIAA and push them to sue people who produce blank media.

  5. Lack of Competition on Cable Firms Limit Users' Freedoms · · Score: 1

Companies should be able to benefit from their foresight or luck (ie, buying cable lines, etc). However, when no competition can come into the area without spending millions on a second cable infrastructure, there's a problem. Most cable or DSL providers can do next to anything, service wise. Broadband might make another step and become like long distance and charge a per-minute fee. This, of course, after they shave down your speeds by about 50%. Its almost as if the more people that subscribe to your network, the less money the company makes, so they must charge more and more for your slowly-declining service.

  6. Don't Complain. on Cracking Down on MP3s at the Office · · Score: 2

Complaining about being yelled at or fired for wasting the company's money and time is like complaining about having to say the pledge of alliegence when your public education is paid for by the government. If you want to listen to and download MP3s on the job, start your own business. While I agree that being able to listen to music while you're working is a good comfort, its not the end of the world if your company bans it. When I went to high school, it was perfectly all right for 20 students in a classroom to watch streaming rap videos in RM format, which choked our measly T3, but it wasn't alright for me to download MP3s and listen to them.

Not like this didn't happen before, at times. Back in colonial times, people's houses weren't exactly built well, and half of them probably had no glass. Anyone could sit around and hear your every words in almost total privacy. You could go to the local store and say, 'the usual, please' the they would know what you meant. They might even suggest items. People weren't demanding total privacy back then. Now, people get pissy when their IM programs don't come with an 'invisible' option or their LiveJournal doesn't have a 'no-read' post option.

Most people are just like, "Ooh, porn, must install Kazaa." so they aren't thinking about p2p, or free software, they're thinking about porn. The whole point of p2p software is to share your files, not to leech off of everyone else. If they share their whole drive, tough, its another lesson to learn.

Why should they care? ISP's in the US for the most part anyway, frown on using home networks or NATs. They will promptly tell you to subscribe to their small business service (read: pay 2x the normal price) or remove your network. In one case, it makes sense. Tech support doesn't want to have to help people set up their networks, and truthfully, companies can't afford the time/effort to train techies in setting up networks. Only basic problems. The small portion that can tech support networks is sent to the commercial-class tech support. I do know, however, that since they limit the speed, the bandwidth used should be ignored. Since my DSL line is limited to 1.5MBps, I should be able to use it 100% of the time and only have to pay my base rate. If they don't like it, they can upgrade their backbones, or drop DSL. Why should we have to pay for their bad decisions?

Its hard enough to pay for DSL when you don't have a job, let alone how hard it will be when Bellsouth decides to raise its rates a few hundred percent because we have no other choice BUT Bellsouth for DSL. I've seen gas stations do the same thing. In a town where there's only one gas station, notice that the prices there are always near a dime higher than other places? Same difference, except for you can't easily get other providers to give you service. This is why all the DSL providers tell you that they won't know if you can have service until you're actually moved in an situated in a new house or apartment.

No. Spammers do all of these things, and they are incredibly hard to prosecute. If Intel wins, spammers will have to think twice about spamming. If Intel loses, the courts are at least informed enough to know that Intel lost NOTHING in this 'attack' (for lack of better word). A few seconds per employee to delete the email. That adds up to a lot, but if each Intel employee lost 10 seconds to remove/read/whatever that email, it doesn't seem like a big loss to me. Its a victory for nerds either way.
