    If you want unintuitive graphics, try UML. I went to a one week embedded programing course (which I've been doing professionally in C for 25 years) that was taught entirely in UML and I felt like I was at an alchemy symposium. Boxes with variously shaped arrows criss-crossing everywhere. Not spaghetti code, but a whole plate of spaghetti. Didn't understand a thing.

    Want to hack law ? Then start by by putting the entire code of law in an SVN-like system. Including proposed laws. With traceability of authors, who voted for them, etc... And an associated wiki for comments. And a complete list of cases that used them. This would be invaluable.

    I personally wouldn't be interested in a tablet or an ebook reader that works best under the sunlight. I just don't read in those conditions. I read in the evening, with external lights off.

    Because you are used to do it like this. If I had a laptop with a screen perfectly readable in sunlight, you can bet your ass off that I'd be working on a bench in the park below my office instead of in my office.

    /me wants 24" or smaller desktop screen with 2048*1536 pixels or more.

    A thousand times yes. There are a few gigantic ones with resolution above 1920x1200, but nothing that would fit on my desk. And the price jump from 1920x1080/1200 to anything above that is huge.

    Yeah, when I was in the US (in my country telemarketing is illegal), I made it a point to try to get telemarketers to cry on the phone. I went along with something like: "You should have listened to your mother when she told you to study and you wouldn't be pissing off people for 4$ an hour now."

    Multiple windows allow us to make use of multiple monitors, true, but if it's the price of fishing out the layer window on one desktop, the tools window on another and the image on yet another, I don't see what the point is. And it's exactly what happens when you launch a lengthy processing function and change desktop to do something else in the meanwhile: when it finishes, some of gimp's windows magically change desktop to 'signal' you and now you have to put them all back together again. Annoying as hell.

    Why do you have to spin this ? Everybody knows that climate change is not 'universally bad'. Places like Canada and Siberia are very likely to benefit from it. As for getting different numbers of penguins from two DIFFERENT methods, it doesn't tell you anything about the effect of global warming. You need to compare numbers obtained from the same method. Since this method is new, it's a non sequitur.

    That's how I explain it to people who ask question such as "What was before the Big Bang?". The question doesn't make any sense because time was created at the same time than the Big Bang. It's exactly like asking "What is farther south than the south pole ?!?". And yes, I've been there just to check... C;-)

    You're giving federal money to Europe ?!? That's news to me. As for the UN, last I checked your were years behind in your payments while being one of the main 'users' of the UN.     Maybe the conclusion would be that salaries ought to be paid in a mix of currencies, say 33% in $, 33% in gold and 33% in the $ equivalent of a standard shopping cart (and 1% in BJ, but I digress).

    Yes. I've noticed that lately /. seems to have offered more varied interviews than in the past. And mith more serious people (not those who run after cheap fame). Keep going this way, even if you need to offer $ for interviews of quality people who usually have better things to do. And don't do it on video: I won't watch it.

    • Don't sponsor criminal organizations like RIAA/MPAA

    Then maybe after 10 years, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and start purchasing some of your products again. In the meanwhile reap what you sow.

    I wasn't clear enough. First I don't wear headphones in the car (it's actually illegal where I live). Second, you put the active noise cancellation on key points of the car (above the shocks, at the engine attachment points, etc) to seriously dampen the vibrations (=sound) coming through them and keeping them from reaching the people inside. Sound coming from the outside is unaffected..
