Another +5 Socialist viewpoint. Perhaps slashdot editors should join the Socialist International. Sounds like you all have a lot in common.
The workers are going to wake up one day and realize they are fucked because they've been robbed blind while they've had their faces glued to their television sets, absorbing the latest disinformation from the media and the government.
And so just who buys the products produced by corporations? Workers do, and at all levels. Corporations make profits by selling products and services to individuals and that includes other corporations. And all workers are compensated in the US, and they are free to use their compensation however they want and that includes NOT watching TV.
Trust me. I know all about this communist propaganda. I used to me one myself, until I realized what a huge lie communism and the sentiments you are spewing are.
The biggest problem with the US is that corporations are given the same rights and treated as regular citizens without having the burdens or responsibility of that designation placed on them.
Only socialist sentiment like this would get modded up to +5 Insightful.
Corporations worldwide have the same respnsibilities worldwide, to their management and to their stockholders as well as to their customers. OUR U.S. system ensures the corporations get the same standing and rights as individuals.
Do yourself a favor and chuck this leftwing lie about corporations. It is in fact markets and business which make the world what it is today: a better place
Amen to that. But it is definately better to be pissed off by MS than to be pissed on by MS. Ball sounds like he's been dry for a good while from the wetting the BSA and MS gave him. Good on him.
Has anyone noticed a pattern here? Every time that SCO gets a major slap-down, they churn out a new press release with some sort of new angle to temporarily bolster their position until the next slap-down?
The referred WSJ article does mention copyleft as another name for the GPL.
From the article, talking about Richard Stallman: To make sure that free software stays free and spreads, in 1991 he wrote the GPL, which he sometimes refers to as "copyleft," because it encourages copying, as opposed to "copyright," which discourages it.
So, what you're saying is we are damned if we do, damned if we don't, right?
I say we don't. Fuck modern environmental science and it supporters in the UN and elsewhere. Environmental science is the alchemy of the new millenium.
If Seatlle gets submerged then maybe the US will finally realize that they have a responsibility to the environment just as all the other nations in the world. Doing nothing to protect the environment because it hurts the economy (as Dr. Shrub claims) is plain stupid and will backfire eventually.
Actually, politically, Seattle being submerged has no downside to it is you don't believe in global warming.
Steel Panthers series was originally released as a DOS game in 1994. Since that time, two more official enhancments have been released, Steel Panthers II (a modern tactical game) and Steel Panthers III ( a platoon level wargame covering the period from 1939 through 1999).
While these games are now essentially out of print, they are still considered to be the high standard for military gaming. Few games in print now can reach them and it is unlikely few will survive the changes in tehcnology the way these games will.
Since the release of SP3, three more modifications of the game have been released, Steel Panthers World at War
(SPWAW)( a rewriting of the code for running on Windows (which, as it happens, runs rather well on Linux under Wine)), Steel Panthers WWII (SPWWII) (essentially a modification of the SP2 code with WWII only changes) and Steel Panthers: Main Battle Tank (SPMBT) (a rewriting of the SP3 code for modern combat only with mods promised out to 2020) All of these games install and run rather well under dosemu.
All these games should have died out when MS killed DOS, but they continue to be very popular with the military wargaming crowd as we speak. Scenarios are constantly being written to these myriad games all the time.
My own website, http://www.rkka.org is dedicated to wargaming using the Steel Panthers series. I have even have a section which allows all the SP series of games to be run in Linux under dosemu. The advantages are very clear to me. These games no longer require anything but simple hardware and software to work well. This basically opens the genre to nations with people who cannot afford the latest and greatest, but who just simply need something that will work well. SP under these conditions (running under Linux) fits( Even WinZip will open gzipped files)
I do not know if these games, as popular as they are, can be considered classic games, since they are still very much alive in the miltary wargaming community. The simple fact is that no one has been able to top these games since 1994. In my most humbled opinion, that is these games' true legacy.
One other note: The Steel Panthers series are a basic rewrite of a series of computer wargames written by Gary Grigsby beginning in *1984*. That is quite a record.
My thinking was basically if Bois agreed to prosecute a questionable case knowing a pump and dump scheme was part of the plan, he could face criminal and civil problems, at the very least conspiracy charges.
I am not a lawyer, but I have a basic grounding of the law and Boies is obligated as an officer of the court not to become involved in anything illegal in the course of his represenation of SCO.
Yes, if SCO hires Boies to prosecute their suit, they are entitled to represenation, but if the basis of the lawsuit is fraudulent and Boies is aware of it, he could be in trouble.
That is pretty extreme, though. Assuming Boies has researched this and found SCO's claim has merit from everything he has found out and from what SCO has told him, there can't be a problem, and IBM has something to answer for.
If SCO executives have conspired to get Boies to prosecute this case knowing it is fraudulent, Boies is still safe as an attorney as long as he can show he knew nothing of the deceit. Not likely either.
I'd be willing to bet that this whole charade by SCO is just a shell game to pump and dump stock, and earn a bit of scratch from MS and SUN, while plowing the company under. Hiring Boies was a PR move.
If this is true then Bois himself can be charged with fraud and a whole host of other federal crimes. In other words, his days as a lawyer are over if this is the case.
SCO still has to prove that the stolen code originated with them. They also have to show that if it did originate with them, that they were deceived (or there was some sort of active deception) which caused that code to be released under the GPL without their knowledge. To do this they must show that they at least had an active vetting program which looked at the code that was released and allowed SCO to sign off on that release.
SCO bears a good deal of the burden in this case and if they cannot show they went to the proper means to ensure the code that was included in the kernal(sp) was the code they wanted, and conversely, they did take measures to protect the code they did not want to be included in the kernal; they may well be laughed out of court.
In order for theft to be apparent there has to be a victim (supposedly SCO) and a perpetrator (IBM), and there has to be an active element (intent to steal) IBM may be a 800 pound gorilla, but they are not stupid. It seems to me that extra caution was exercized to ensure that code IBM didn't want in was kept out, and donated code was placed in the kernal how they wanted it placed. I would think that donated code would be fully vetted by lawyers and by God before being released.
The source code for Linux is there to see. It is unthinkable that someone stole code and placed it in the code base It's fine to use analogies that someone walked into someone's home to steal, but when they get caught they offer to put it back.
It's more like SCO brings a TV into YOUR home, then walks out and reports you to the cops that you stole his TV.
Coporations have the exact same rights as individual persons. In the eyes of the law, a corporation is no different than any individual. They have the right to free speech, for example, (they can advetise about politics as well as their own product)and they have the same protections.
You need to read up on the law in the US fully before you make those assertions.
I have to concur with other replies to this. But, it is really not so hard to believe the parent was modded so high. Socialist thought is rampant and unchallenged in slashdot. It would be a true miracle to see it disappear, but don't get me wrong. It would be a welcome miracle.
It is kinda sad becuase it wasn't civil aviation which enabled the attacks of 911.
Laxness and plain incompetence on the part of the INS, the FBI and the CIA enabled those bastards to attack the US.
So what does congress do? They find a way to launch a federally funded assault on civil avation, in the form of unneccesary and expensive regulations from airports to civil aviation; they virtually destroy the domestic airline industry, meanwhile the multitude of stoopid policies which allowed murdering Muslims into the USA in the first place continues with hardly a change.
You remind me of this quote I saw in digdug.cx about someone who decides since they can chat with their friends on IM and can use Outlook Express, and IE, they can go to college and major in computer science.
I think the software that comes with Linux is incredibly good and easy to use. I think the Gnome desktop is ready in business for the enterprise with tons of applications, from database to groupware.
I have studied this for a long long long time, and I am ready to commit to using Linux on the desktop for it is the best, most stable, most flexible solution available.
I don't think I could in good conscience tell the good people (and there's gotta be hundreds of thousands of them) who have slaved their asses off to produce a rather decent product, to pull their heads out of their asses. I think the people who have worked on open source software/Linux deserve a good measure of praise (not to mention compensation), not only for their devotion to this concept that is Linux, but also to the end product that is out there; usable and configurable.
I think they deserve far better than they have gotten, certainly with this stupid SCO lawsuit that is all over IT news these days.
I would like to get some details on this myself. It doesn;t sound right.
Running Samba and using Win9X is the only way those computers can use a permissions-type file system.
File permissions in Linux are a wonderful thing. A few months ago I had a problem with users wanting to change the interface screen to a database program. I simply set the shares where the executables are to read/execute only (555). Not more changing interfaces (A lot of bitching from users, though)
I find it hard to believe that systems administrators have such a hard time meshing Samba with Linux files permissions. Files permissions are a security enhancement not a hinderance.

Give it a rest. I am an SCO /. news junkie. I can't help myself. I am addicted! Please, just one more hit of SCO news. Just one more, please?
Just unbelievable. Career/industrial suicide. Not pretty...
Don't be sad. I fixed it.
It kinda pises me off coz Peace through Superior Firepower is much better sounding than the one I have now.
Oh well...
Amen to that. But it is definately better to be pissed off by MS than to be pissed on by MS. Ball sounds like he's been dry for a good while from the wetting the BSA and MS gave him. Good on him.
It's called whack-a-mole.
Yeah, a lot of users think a computer is like a Ronco product: Set it and forget it!
From the article, talking about Richard Stallman: To make sure that free software stays free and spreads, in 1991 he wrote the GPL, which he sometimes refers to as "copyleft," because it encourages copying, as opposed to "copyright," which discourages it.
You are a crazy environazi and your point is totally invalid. Global Warming (tm) is not proven scientific fact.
I say we don't. Fuck modern environmental science and it supporters in the UN and elsewhere. Environmental science is the alchemy of the new millenium.
Actually, politically, Seattle being submerged has no downside to it is you don't believe in global warming.
Maybe we need to start using more aerosols. Maybe we best stop trying to pass off unproven theories such a global warming as proven fact.
Having just read the above, let me add: Let a thousand jokes be posted!

No, MS doesn;t support NFS, but you can still mount an NFS share using Samba.
It's a shame it isn't reciprocated.
Samba is a nicely done Linux module. Helped introduce me to the world of Linux waaay back in 1999.
Transitions from MS to Linux are never easy
