Ironically, the term "narcissistic twit" also applies to some dumbass corporation whose tool loses a top secret prototype, after having too many drinks at a public restroom, and hopes the whole legal system bows to their corporate interests and entitlement to total control.
It's scary how brainwashed people are in the US regarding corporations. I can envision a near future in which people will gladly insert 12 inch sticks up their rectums because they will be told that is good for the economy.
The irony of it all is that in the tech sector, a lot of the evolution and advancement come from people who are in it because they love technology and scientific research, not just because of monetary rewards
In fact I know people who love so much what they do, they will point blank tell you they do it most definitively not for the money since they don't get paid anywhere near the amount that their time and effort would deserve.
Which sort of proves that most of the assumptions by those in love with Capitalism are at best incredibly dishonest. If people were guaranteed a relative level of stability (guaranteed housing, health care, food, and education) while being allowed to concentrate on what they love, you'd see humanity advancing by leaps and bounds. But then, the aim of Capitalism (and most other "isms") is not human advancement, but rather a closed loop cycle of concentration of capital, since that very same capital is both the means and the end.
If you look at overall system performance, not just Mhz, you will see that the same performance increases have been sort of maintained during the past 2 decades. Furthermore, under certain algorithms, things like GPUs obliterate that trend.
If you were to plot performance per buck, you would see a dramatic ramp up, which during the 90s was no where near as dramatic. This is, at the end of this decade, relatively, you will be able to buy much more performance per dollar across this decade, than you were able to do during the 90s.
You lose that perspective if you simply focus on clock speed.
Damn right. Besides weekends, what has organized labor done for us?
OK, OK...
Besides weekends AND vacations, what has organized labor done for us?
Hum, what... OK
Besides weekends, vacations AND paid leave, what has organized labor done for us?
Really? No kidding... OK
Besides weekend, vacation, paid leave AND fair salaries, what has organized labor done for us?
For real?
Besides weekends, vacation, paid leave, fair salaries AND safe working conditions, what has organized labor done for us?
What? Really... OK OK
Besides weekends, vacations, paid leave, fair salaries, safe working conditions AND retirements, what has organized labor done for us?
Huh? come on... OK OK
Besides weekends, vacations, paid leave, fair salaries, safe working conditions, retirement, AND medical coverage, what has organized labor done for us?
"An infant born in America will grow up in an American cultural environment, and will have American probabilities for growing up to be a decent person. An adult immigrant from another country is a much larger risk, and many would show up just because they couldn't succeed in any other country either. You do not want to let those people in. It's ok to be selfish."
Yeah right you are not an American. And I am the queen of Sada. LOL.
It is funny to see republicans trying to pretend to be "financially responsible" after generating more debt in just 8 years, than the whole accumulated debt accrued by this nation in all its history.
Not that the Dems are that much better. But seriously, it must take some sort of reinforced steel balls... for a republican to try to assume some sort of fiscal moral higher ground.
Pray do tell, which public university has a $2 billion dollar endowment for just their engineering department?
It seems all some libertarian/republican posters can do to justify their view is spread innuendo or make up facts. It is intellectually disingenuous at best.
Actually, if you knew anything about how federal funding works (NSF, and DARPA for example... I am sure NIH et al do the same) there is plenty of oversight. Most funding grants requires to provide report and justification on how, what, and by whom each penny in the grant was spent.
As a researcher myself, I think the original poster has no idea on the amount of overhead that goes into managing a grant. $12K in the big scheme of things is not that much. A normal paper may cost triple that just on student salaries.
In fact, for each $1K of funding I get, the amount of time I have to invest in obtaining it, working with it, and then justifying it via multiple reports would make any sane person think twice about getting a PhD. Also, for each dollar in external funding, the uni most likely "taxes" you half of it. So that they can subsidize the education of little pricks like the original poster. What an honor!
Only now??????? Where have you been in the past decade.
The last outfit I worked that was using CATIA, the windows machines outnumbered AIX dekstop boxes like 10 to 1. And even the high end AIX gfx were starting to seriously under perform compared to the Quadros in the PeeCees.
Same thing for NASTRAN. I am no fan of windows, but Dassault, PTC et al have focused on the Windows versions for a while now. And that is because the price/performance of AIX workstations hasn't been there in a loooooong while.
Yes, indeed the new deal did nothing to rebuilt the US of A and its production infrastructure to the point that it could out produce the 3 power of the axis combined.
In fact, FDR's plans were so catastrophic that he was elected "only" 3 times, and people cried in the streets when the guy crooked.
Sometimes, the ignorance of the American populace as illustrated by the anonymous coward above astounds me. The lemming attitude that makes idiots like these proactively handicap their own interests astounds me.
So let me get this straight, one of the few economic policies with a proven record of success (the new deal for example) are now framed as toxic. Whereas the insane policies that led to the gilded age, the great depression, the crash of the late 80s, the recession of the early 90s, and the current credit crunch... all those things are now gospel. Wow!
No wonder that capitalism is about making dumb people part of their money, as there seems to be an infinite supply of dumb idiots....
TI just went fabless. And they have their own issues, they basically left SUN hanging without a net as they were the fab partner for the SPARC parts.
And the x86 licensing with Intel forbids AMD from going fabless, or getting bought out.
An AMD sans its x86 processors would be of no interest to anyone.

You must be a hit at parties.
So someone was talking about WORKSTATIONS and you go off on a tangent about high end SERVERS?
Yeah, what planet are you on exactly?
Really, you had all that in 1998?
You know that "flash" refers to the memory technology kind, not the adobe persuasion one.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Nothing else to add about a post which was just right. We're a social self aware species, about damned time we start acting like one!
To run what software exactly?
"... we just don't trust the code because we don't trust the principals used for getting where they are today..."
So by "shop" you meant the couple PeeCees you use down at you parents basement. Right?
I don't think "hard core" means what you want it to mean in this case.

Sorry for the tangent...
It is hard to figure out what your "point is" if you're going to keep changing it.
I thought you were talking about cross platform issues, and now it is about game studios. Uh?
Welcome to the wonderful world of "leakage current" in the overall power dissipation of modern processors (sub 90nm).
Short story: cooler chips lead to lower power dissipation, thus a better cooling solution can indeed reduce overall power dissipation.
That is a fairly ignorant analysis.

An IT "professional" should have no issue discerning between a marketing gimmick and a value proposition.
With my condolences to the Monty Python:

Wow, if I wanted to read so many GOP/libertarian talking points with no sources or references, I would have signed on to Free Republic.
What the heck is going on Slashdot today?

As a person who is working at a top university, let me tell you that you have no clue what you are talking about.
I would like to see where those mythical piles of money on which universities are sitting are, because we could sure use it right about now.
So please, oh wise one, point us to where all that cash may be.
