Nice rant. But gimme a break. The iPod is extremely valuable. I think it's the coolest thing I've ever owned. Despite paying a lot of money for my 1st gen 5 GB iPod, it's well worth every penny. I use it all the time. It works perfectly. It is an absolute delight to use. It honestly improves my quality of life. Listening on the train, listening while walking home, listening while studying, etc.
Oh, and even Joe Satriani digs that Darkness tune.
I sort of agree. I have an original 5 GB and felt like it attracted a lot of attention. I mostly stopped using the white headphones coz I didn't like them - uncomfortable and not the best sound. I bought some other more comfortable, better quality earbuds (Sennheiser MX400s) and have used them since.
I have friends in a similar situation to yours. My friend originally shunned the iPod, saying he'd never pay that much money for a music toy. But now he's gave in and bought one (and totally loves it, of course). But he feels like such a trend follower that he won't wear the white headphones.
Now the Personalize Search link I posted above says "Sorry, Google Personalized does not yet support Safari.
(Setting your User-Agent to Mozilla may work)". It looks like they are tweaking it a lot.
Where do you see this? I'm on Safari and the Personalized Search seems to load up fine for me, and searches seem to work. I didn't see Safari mentioned in the FAQ. What am I missing?
Oh wow. What a waste of an account. Someone should just write a script to search for I'm ________, then automatically register the username ________ and reply with the same post as above.
I think we should try to keep things in perspective. I am going to be making more in my first job out of university (Computer Engineering, graduate this year) than most school teachers will after 5 years. Do I make as significant a contribution to society as teachers? I'd say definitely not.
You are right, it's an idea whose time has come. My school has it. (Trying to find a link but only came up with this conference we are apparently hosting on the topic.)
Yes, I know there are a couple of schools out there that offer SoftEng degrees, but until industry distinguishes them from CompScists and requires the engineering designation for key positions they are meaningless.
I wouldn't say that. It's certainly a start. Sort of a Catch 22, no?
Is this modded funny because of the Co.uk? What about when the script makes one that makes perfect sense, like the one I received:
Hello user of Ucalgary.ca e-mail server,
We warn you about some attacks on your e-mail account. Your computer may contain viruses, in order to keep your computer and e-mail account safe, please, follow the instructions.
For more information see the attached file.
For security reasons attached file is password protected. The password is "60456".
Best wishes, The Ucalgary.ca team http://www.ucalgary.ca
I think we (Slashdot readers in general) are being a little pompous if we think that this isn't convincing at all. I think it's the most convincing virus I've ever seen. There is only one serious grammar mistake, which is better than most Slashdot posts. The concept of seeing an attached file for details would seem reasonable to many people. Even the password protected thing makes a fair amount of sense.
This email was made even more confusing when I received numerous other *real* emails from my mail system saying my mail had viruses in it.
Flamebait!? I'm serious. What leads you to honestly believe that Eminem himself cut off the proceedings. It said Steve Jobs called Eminem's record company. Did he ask to speak to Eminem himself?
Telling a bunch of geeks about their products doesn't work, they already get all the information themselves. And they buy based on reasearch anyways, not on advertising.
Right about geeks, so why would you give Joe Sixpack facts (which are for geeks)? Joe Sixpack doesn't care about the facts, he likes the jingle or logo.
I'm seeing other large problems with 0.8. The Google icon in the search bar is all squashed and distorted. And my Toolbar Booksmarks fold only shows one sub folder and none of the main bookmarks in there.
I had no such problems with 0.7. Do I have to delete my profile or something?
Our 4th year Comp Engg. program requires us to take a CS class on Compilers (which includes a lot of Finite Automata stuff - or State Machines as we call them in Engg.) I'm having a *very* hard time seeing the usefulness of it. Anyone have any insight?

How do I apply for this prestegious award?

Hmmm. Those search results are very similar to a Google search for juts "processor". Not exactly the same, but quite close.

Any proof of that?
Slashdot. No wireless. More incorrect tech predictions than Dvorak. Lame.
It would be a lot less pathetic with a lower UID.

I think if the battery life and capacity where the only key factors, then iRiver players would be outselling iPods.

Yes, having Slashdotters writing a report is about the best idea I've ever heard. 10000 Slashbots on 10000 keyboards....
Flamebait!? I'm serious. What leads you to honestly believe that Eminem himself cut off the proceedings. It said Steve Jobs called Eminem's record company. Did he ask to speak to Eminem himself?
Are you sure that's not the "royal Eminem" as in his huge group of advisors/lawyers/agent/record label/etc/
Best.... post..... ever!
I get 2.5 on my 12" PB, max. Usually closer to 2.

Too bad /. cuts off your sig just enough to make it completely useless as an anagram!
You don't have any concept of basic civil human communication, do you?
I had no such problems with 0.7. Do I have to delete my profile or something?
Geeks have money? Then why do so many people around here run Linux on Pentium 133s?
Sweet sassy molassy, was that ever funny!
