It is frustrating to see so many people go to such extremes of rationalization and rhetoric to avoid the obvious conclusion. Humanity is clearly and undeniably threatened by both fossil fuel shortage and global warming. Both are the result of reckless over-use of fossil fuels for the last 150 years. As always, the best solution to the problem is REMOVING OR MINIMIZING THE CAUSE. If the cause is energy over-use, the solution is eliminating and/or reducing energy use.
Humanity (and particularly the West) must learn to get by on FAR less fossil fuels than we currently consume. This will preserve what precious little we have left, and postpone and hopefully minimize the effects of global warming (if that is possible).
The most efficient energy sources by FAR are conservation and reduction. No megawatt is cheaper, cleaner, and easier than the one you don't use because you minimized your energy requirements. No gallon of automotive fuel is more environmentally responsible than the one you save when you ride your bike to work.
When you consider the severity of the very real threats posed to us today, why are these ideas frightening?
I read more than half of IBM and the Holocaust, and was very much impressed with the wealth of detail and context it provided. It is truly an impressive work of historical investigation, starts at the very beginning with Watson, and does not delve too much into impassioned villianizing of IBM. I sincerely recommend it for anyone interested in the history of IBM.
My company offers generous salaries, stock options, and benefits, yet is flexible with work hours and vacation time (or at least my boss is). We aren't expected or motivated to work more than 40 hour weeks. Additionally, though a privately-held company, they are completely forthcoming about company financials. (Yes, the stock options are only theoretically valuable.)
So I'm loyal to my company because I feel that they treat me well.
I've read most of the authors mentioned in this thread. Unfortunately, I have extremely cynical standards for fantasy/sf literature.
I'm currently reading Neil Gaiman's 'American Gods' and find it drawn out and digressive. I also recently re-read the first two Dune books. they were exciting at the start, but really slowed down toward the end. Robert Jordan writes the most worthless trash ever printed and should be jailed. I couldn't stomach Lois McMaster Bujold either, though I tried hard, and I can see how some people would like his/her? work.
George RR Martin's 'Song of Fire and Ice' trilogy, however, blew my mind. I found myself glued to the pages hours and hours a day. This is real literature, with complex, living characters that you really understand. The topic is rough, suspenseful, brutal, and above all, BELIEVABLE. The plot never takes precedence over the characters' motivations.
I also enjoyed Tad William's Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn trilogy. A little light, but it keeps moving, and is powerful in parts.
David Brin's Uplift series, especially 'Startide Rising' are fun too.
My 2 cents. But seriously, if you read no more fantasy for the rest of your life, pick up "Game of Thrones", the first of GRRM's trilogy. I guarantee you will be surprised!
I drove like a fscking maniac when I was a teenager. Its a miracle I didn't kill myself or someone else. I probably would be a better man today if the cops had busted me when I was 17 and yanked my license for a year, so I agree wholeheartedly with this product.
We're talking about teenagers here, not adults. It is acceptable for their parents to "invade their privacy" to protect them from their own immaturity.
the health effects of all the electro-magnetic waves or whatever they are that all these wireless devices broadcast? Just how much "wireless" can we use before we start interfering with all our brains?
There is much more to being gesticulated than just getting nourishment from your umbilical cord. Imagine the possible emotional and psychological effects on a creature that did not experience his/her mother's heartbeat, warmth, movement, etc. pre-natally. It makes me shudder.
A fetus developng in another woman's body is still gesticulating NATURALLY. Is that a forbidden word on/.?

Someone bought a brand new 23" apple cinema display at the CompUSA downtown with my card...

Sixteen dollars is WAY too much for a CD. Charge $10 or less. Probably many more people will buy it.

brutha!
distributed data storage/automated backup = NIGHTMARE!!!
The best way to do this is have ALL company data (as far as possible) stored on centralized file servers. Then you can:
1) administer backups on a SINGLE machine
2) toss/move/rebuild desktop computers at will
3) rebuild much easier in event of a catastrophe
Centralize, man. It's the only way to go.

Pardon my ignorance, I'm not a Linux GUI user or developer. (But would like to be!)
Is it true that Gnome, KDE, Ximian, etc, are all based on the basic X-Windows system? Isn't that system supposed to be very inefficient?
