  1. Almost Worthless on 'Cut and Paste' Is Out, 'Pick and Drop' Is In · · Score: 1

This is sort of silly. The pen is not the transport mechanism. Both computers simply retrieve the file from the same place. This implies that both systems already had access and rights to it. You're just copying the URL to the resource on a file server somewhere. You can do that with copy and paste in an email, but that's not what pasting a photo in an email is, at all.
This is a lot different then walking up to a stranger at a trade show, and having your PDAs swap business cards over IR. That is actually the transfer of new data.

If anyone is interested in the XPort FPGA and I/O Adaptor used in this project, there is a good article about it, in the May 2004 issue of Dr. Dobbs Journal. They use it as a spectrum analyzer, and said it's very easy to use. Almost any set of I/Os is possible, making it a super simple embedded platform.
I just read it this morning, and am thinking of getting it myself. Sadly, the article on the website is $$ to view. But, if you're interested in the device, it would be worth paying to view it.

I worked at a printer for a few days one summer, and did cards for a Snapple cap game. These were the cards that you could mail and request for no-purchase necessary. They were VERY careful about counting. Every stack was checked again and again. There were agents there to keep watch, and the grand prize winner cards, of which there were enough that all of the winners could be mail-in, were checked and rechecked around breaktime and quitting time. It was VERY stressful, to say the least, but a bit of insight anyway.

The evolution of Chicago was similiar. The early builds seen in 1994 were sellable/releasable, but weren't nearly as nice as the final Windows 95 turned out to be. (Which 9 years later, looks lame)

  14. It's about time on Star Trek TOS DVD Box Sets Forthcoming · · Score: 2, Interesting

Finally, an affordable release of TOS. The original release was paired episodes on DVD for about $30. That is a very high price point. Coming from a monthly by-mail subscription, it was a good deal, but these box sets should bring it down even further.
I have the $700 tied up in the TNG sets ($100 * 7 years) and I never regret it. It's a complete collection, that no one can ever take away. Paired up with the "Companion" CD containing all of the TV commercial spots, it is the complete TNG series.

  15. It's Slow on Projected 'Average' Longhorn System Is A Whopper · · Score: 1

As an MSDN subscriber, I've had access to a build for a few months now, and I have to say that I was less then impressed. I will confirm the fact that Longhorn is VERY slow, and in need of a speed boost.
I've run it on two different P4 3.0ghz machines, one with 512meg, and the other with 1gig of RAM. The results where not acceptable. I became frustrated by the lack of response fairly quickly. There are also a set of new UI elements that can not be disabled that take up the top 100pixels or so, of every window, no matter your resolution. Dropping to 640x480 and 800x600 proved my fear, there is just not enough remaining screen real estate to be useful.

I remember reading this whitepaper in 2001 about how to do this, and why, and I wonder if it is powering the entire phenomenon.

Some people, myself included, never rewatch a movie in the theater. The movie is going to make it to the web no matter what, as we're seeing currently. And, around here at least, DVDs come out before Pay-Per-View and the such get them. What is there to cut into?
You know what the trick of it is, they can pull an "Underworld" on it. THey can have that immediate DVD with no or few extras or menus, and then just have the normal Special Edition a couple months down the road. The same die hard DVD people who buy it day 1, will want to have the full version later on.
