I know who Jean Sibelius was, but Ucklak was talking about some "Sibelus" software. "Sibelius" is a well-known music notation package. There might be a plugin you need to install to view score sheets created with it. Well, I was just pissed off a little bit by someone complaining about a piece of software they don't even know how to spell. I must admit that my post wasn't worth more than the original troll. Sorry.

This might be true for basic concepts like finding files etc., but the "bare-metal way" won't do you any good in a couple of years, when all of the underlying infrastructure has changed in your distro and you simply don't know what the "best practice" is. Until last week, I had an Ubuntu (7.10) install which still used configuration files that I had hand-edited for Debian potato. Then I finally decided to try all the automagic features of that same Ubuntu distribution - and I don't regret it. As long as the distribution will still let you have that look under the hood like Ubuntu does, I don't see any disadvantage to autodetection and "ease of use". (It's nothing more than a Debian variant, after all...)

The German "Buchpreisbindung" (fixed prices for professional sellers) has been in effect for a long time. It has nothing to do with DVDs etc. The only "new" thing about it is the court's decision that it's also valid for eBay, which doesn't really come as a surprise.

Good novels don't need sympathetic characters. (btw, Isidore != sympathetic?) To me, the main theme of Do Androids... is the "What is human" question. There is a review of "professional" graphic cards in the latest issue of the German magazine "c't", including detailed data on image quality. I don't know about the computer magazine market in other countries, but I think c't is the only "readable" mag here in Germany (nothing but badly disguised advertising in other mags).

I believe that if you need to spend hours doing mind-numbing tasks just to be able to keep playing, you're either A) doing something wrong or B) playing a badly-designed game. Some people also seem to like doing those mind-numbing tasks. A friend of mine spent hours improving his jump skill in Morrowind. And sometimes even a well-designed game will force you to do some silly tasks. Ah, inventory management... I almost miss that fifteen minutes of item trading between the six party members in Baldur's Gate after each major battle...

As much as I like the idea of playing a CRPG with GM on the Internet, it still remains a CRPG with all its limitations. In a classical Paper&Pencil game, I don't have to write some script or to model a dungeon for the players, I just _tell_ them how it looks.
