With always on and 0 downtime, they are the ultimate target to hack.
No need for zero-day exploits.
Now, one can get all the personal information they need from the most vulnerable of people.
Really makes me sick.
I am not suggesting it, as it is already happening now (itt was already someone else's suggestion).
More than half of my team is overseas. I am only needed now when certain customers require US-only person.
There really is no need to import foreign work anymore as most of it can be done in their own country. India is a good example, where employees abroad are able to work remotely. Most companies know and do this due to VPN to sponsor company in US. That is why Virtual Desktops is a growth industry!
As an added bonus, they can be paid in native wages for their local country. Why would companies bring employees to the US, except if a physical presence is needed, i.e. farm work., etc.?
I stopped wearing a watch when my last one broke over 10 years ago. I am surrounded by time - on my computer, the TV guide, cell phone, clock on microwave, clock on stove, clock on standard phone, time is everywhere. Why would I want to strap it on my wrist?
Once you don't hear the noise, you can think. With no internet, you won't be able to cry for help and then have to work through your own problem. Don't worry about reinventing the wheel.
In the article, SuperMicro has fix in update. However, the key takeaway is that thousands of people decided to not patch their SH1T.
"This means at the point of this writing, there are 31,964 systems that have their passwords available on the open market. It gets a bit scarier when you review some of the password statistics. Out of those passwords, 3296 are the default combination."
"Besides flashing, there is another (albeit unsupported) temporary fix. Most of the systems affected by this particular issue also have their “sh” shell accessible from the SMASH command line. If you login to the SMASH via ssh and run the command “shell sh”, you can drop into a functional SH shell. From there you can actually kill all “upnp” processes and their related children, which provides a functional fix. That is of course until the system is completely disconnected from power and reconnected, during which the IPMI module will reboot. This is what I have done for our own systems that were unable to be permanently fixed at this time. After continual monitoring, I am satisfied with the results and there has not been any noticeable impact on functionality."
Hey ganjadude,
Where is team called NY Onodaga? Sorry, don't be offended, but ganjadude sounds like name of white man trying to be cool (when he is not). Like dad wearing sons clothes.
That would be a good name. The double double-you. Whoa. WW. Looks hot. My other thought was the Washington Rednecks. If there was a jersey, I would buy it. That would be my team. Ha ha ha.
So, after getting blackmail email, first course of action was to take matters into your own hands?

We should stop having scholarships for athletics. It should only be for academic achievement. That way the motivation to do good in school will be higher.
All the ozone from the exhaust of cars is the culprit. We just can't make enough ozone. Time to rev the engines.
It is rare for Windows Server to run on bare metal. Most are run as a virtual machine. Hypervisors are the last thing customers update.

Right. I choose to err on the side of caution. Maybe I should post as Anonymous Coward?
My hat is off to you. When I see systems with high uptime, I see missing updates.

Counterfeited is now an option. Personally, I think a name change like Virginia Moonshiners would be cool.

I am more worried about people not patching what can be patched.

Unlikely. The human race is a mix bag. There is no data on how many humans are Homo-Sapiens or Homo-Quantum.
