Not sure what the Scooba does, (obviously, since the thing isn't out yet), but the Roomba doesn't a pretty good job. You have to pick up the papers you might have on the floor, but you can leave things like books (well, books that are thick) and larger objects. Not sure why you would want to do that, if you really want the whole floor vac-ed.

So, this is just a guess, but given how the Roomba works, I imagine that Scooba works nearly the same way. There's a gizmo under the Roomba that can tell when the "elevation" (for lack of a better word), changes. That keeps it from falling down staircases. When the Roomba moves onto a rug, the front of the thing gets a little higher than the rest, and I would bet this is enough for it to back off, if it were programmed to do so. The Scooba probably does this. The cleaning solution is probably back far enough so that the rug wouldn't be harmed.

The Roomba comes with gizmos you can set up as "invisible walls" so the Roomba won't move into the area. I'm guessing that the Scooba uses the same sort of technology to keep it off the regular carpets.

I had my doubts about this thing before I got it, but I have to say, I like it. Lets me keep things vac-ed a lot more often than before. ;-)

  19. Re:Look, this is like the Java argument on Hyper-Threading, Linus Torvalds vs. Colin Percival · · Score: 1

Whoa there cowboy, we're on the same page here at least partially.

The "do a fork of it, and fix it" is the argument people use whenever the whole Java thing comes up. My posting was to them, saying if they're bitching about the kernel, then they should put up or shut up, because it's exactly the same argument they use when Java is brought up. They can't go using that argument about one, and not the other.

As for the kernel, there I think you're wrong. There are a helluva lot more people that understand kernel programming than you presume there are. There have been many patches submitted against it that were rejected because Linus didn't want 'em in there. Some were likely bad additions and should have been rejected; others weren't and should have been included. THAT is a BIG problem.

As I said, other OSes are getting ahead in the multiprocessor game, and Linus didn't effect change when it needed to happen... several years ago. Now it's going a really big PITA to do it. It's quite likely that some company that's doing that sort of work is going to end up surplanting Linus' kernel when multi-processor systems become more commonplace and people start waking up to the fact that the stock kernel just doesn't perform as well as it should.

What people are failing to realize is that Linus has a stranglehold on what's going on in the kernel, and they're just fat dumb and happy about it. Sun does the same thing with Java, and it's "OMFG Sun suxxorz" from the same people.

  20. Look, this is like the Java argument on Hyper-Threading, Linus Torvalds vs. Colin Percival · · Score: 0, Flamebait

The solution for this is just like the "Java should be open source" argument that people always float. "If Java were open source, we could do a fork and fix what's wrong with it".

If you don't like what's going on with the project, do a fork of it, and fix it.

At least, that's how the argument goes when people are talking about Java. Since this is the Linux kernel, people seem to be a bit unwilling to do the same thing.

It's long since time that there be splits in the kernel. This whole thing with SMP is going to turn around and bite Linux if something isn't done about it soon. Other operating systems are prepared (or are preparing), why should Linux be so far behind?

And don't make the argument that Linux isn't really that far behind. It is. If Linus had started the work several years ago, it wouldn't be as big of a problem. The trouble is Linus doesn't want it mucking up the kernel, or making it harder for other people to code for it.

Well, doing the work to get multiple processes in kernel context (not just two or three, I mean a LOT of processes) IS hard, and it will be difficult for people to program under the new kernel rules.

It doesn't mean the results aren't worth it though.
