  2. This is not flex time on Are You On Time To Work? · · Score: 1

Flex time, at least in the way I've always seen it implemented is: Work whatever hours you want to, as long as you get your eight hours in. Generally, this means being in most of the day, and ALWAYS be there for meetings, demos and customer visits. In practice, it's usually be in by 9 am or so...

The thing is, having you clock in at 7:30 and getting docked if you're not in by that time is not flex time. Calling a "cat" a "dog" doesn't make it one.

I have to say though, that if I were to find myself in that situation, I would clock out the SECOND the eight hours were up.

I've written Java apps since the beginning, and it entirely depends on how you code stuff...which is true for any language.

I've done major projects using AWT, Swing and Java 3D. Hell, JBuilder uses Swing... I use that every day, and it works great cross-platform. Thank God I didn't have to do all my development on Windows, and I could stick with Solaris.

No Java 3D on the Mac did suck. When Apple reps came to talk to us about doing our Java 3D on Mac, they tried to tell us to use Quicktime 3D.

Java3D is on "hold", btw. Sun's now doing that OpenGL bindings to Java. I've used those, and it's pretty damn fast. A helluva lot faster than Java 3D was, but then, OpenGL isn't a scene graph API either. That's under Linux too. If you haven't seen it, check it out. It's great.

Sound....done some of that, but not enough,

I have to disagree with your conclusion though. Java's still my choice for most desktop apps.

Oh, stop it. You act like this is exclusively a Java thing. Grown-up programmers know when to use the right language for the right thing.

I've run into many more goofballs that think C/C++ is the "one true answer" to all of lifes ills, and then spend most of their time tracking down pointer problems with impossibly complicated code.

The point is, there's NO one language that should be used for everything.

What to do really tough number crunching? If you use C for something like that, most computational scientists would laugh in your face and head back to their Fortran programs... and they're right to do so, because for THEIR apps, Fortran is the thing to use.

    3) Java is fine for platform independence. I code on Linux, and deploy on Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows. It all works fine.
