As TAT-14 is a dual, bi-directional ring of cable, a single serious fault should not be enough to break it, as traffic would still be able to flow between the countries on the ring. Unfortunately, a part of the cable near the US coast had already suffered a technical fault earlier this month, which meant there was no built-in redundancy to cope with Tuesday's failure.

    I can hear it now:

"Hey boss, half of the cable just failed. We need to get on this right away".

    The cable's still working, right?

"Yeah, but if something else goes wrong, we're screwed".

Look, that cable hasn't failed in ten years; let's put off repairing it until January. That way it won't affect our 2003 budget.

But these things generally happen in pairs, and with no back up - well, we're taking an awful risk. If something else fails, most of Europe - well, I don't have to tell you the consequences. Plus, remember..the weather in January -

Even if he knows his unit is a Linksys, there's still a 50/50 chance he'll hook to the wrong one. Not to mention the fact that Windows usually connects to the strongest signal automatically. On one of my computers that would be my neighbor's connection on the other side of the wall from where that computer is (as opposed to mine almost 50 feet away). I can see if you're cracking even the most rudimentry encription, but all these ones (except mine) are sitting right out in the open. Most 'old generation' companies were founded by people who WANTED to provide something. Vivendi and their ilk's only WANT is to make as much cash as possible. This is why they sue 12 and 15 year olds. This is why commercial music SUCKS as much as it does, and yes, this is why they WANT to destroy all the original music from MP3.com. The RIAA's legacy is that of a LIAR! When CDs first came out, LPs cost 6.98. CD prices were a full TEN DOLLARS MORE at $16.98! The RIAA claimed this was because CD's cost more to make and would come down as technology improved. Well, IT took OVER TWENTY YEARS for ONE company to lower them to twelve dollars - and this only happened as a RESULT of file sharing! The other companies still fix prices at around 16.98. Also, they killed the 45 RPM single - the way for the consumer to get the song they WANTED without having to pay for a CD 80% filled with JUNK! Along the way, they've screwed EVERYONE...the musician, songwriter, and especially the consumer! Then they lobbied Congress to make CD rentals a federal crime (ever wonder why there's movie rentals but no CD rental stores -The RIAA paid off Congress to kill them in the mid 1980's). The irony of course is that consumers STILL PAY about 10 cents per blank cassette in fees that go to the recording industry! Finally, Napster comes out...the perfect opportunity for the RIAA to 'make up' with the consumer..and make a PILE of money in the process! Who in their right mind wouldn't pay 20 bucks a month for decent quality downloads of their favorite music? It's a model that's worked for the movie industry (who make close to HALF their income on movie rentals, by the way). The RIAA's response is to sue them out of existence....BUT WAIT Hilary Rosen comes out and publicly says that the RIAA WON'T SUE individuals... Now we're to the next lie...the worst one of all... In a RECESSION, the RIAA's sales are down (poor baby - come to Montana Ave in Santa Monica, CA and see how many whitewashed store windows have sprouted in the past year). Their response is to call their customers PIRATES AND CROOKS....blaming file sharing for their sales drop - when STUDY AFTER STUDY shows that file sharers buy MORE CDs then the average person. We won't even mention that music SUCKS these days...and I'm sure that customers just LOVE being called crooks by them! Now they begin suing INDIVIDUALS...a 100% turnabout from their earlier statement! Yet still they wonder why sales keep dropping... The bottom line is this: THESE PEOPLE ARE A HERD OF CLUELESS, NASTY CROOKS AND LIARS THAT ARE 100% OUT OF TOUCH WITH THEIR CUSTOMERS!!!

Everyone is right. This is another attempt to tax me more. Many here have said that since Vonage is a telephone service, it should be taxed like one. I disagree. First off, I must have DSL to use Vonage. There's no other way. Adelphia cable has capped upstream at under 100K in Santa Monica, and Vonage won't work at all when someone is surfing the web with cable. This makes DSL mandatory. Next, I MUST have a Verizon telephone to get DSL. Verizon charges me many, many taxes just to have a telephone. The taxes are almost half of the 34 dollar bill in fact. I have Spring long distance, which is supposed to be free, but I find that I have to pay something like 6 plus dollars a month in Taxes just to have long distance I don't use. Last month, my total Sprint LD bill was 8 dollars. Like I said, over six of it was taxes. I may drop it next month. DSL charges me about four dollars a month in taxes. That's another 8 percent in taxes. Now Vonage is charging me six dollars a month in taxes for my four numbers. Let's do the math: Taxes collected: (conservative estimates) Verizon: 12.00 Sprint: 6.00 DSL: 3.85 Vonage: 6.00 Total: $27.85. I pay another over 30 bucks a month in taxes for two mobile phones. These are the taxes that I pay just for the RIGHT to RECEIVE PHONE CALLS! I haven't made a single call yet! To me at least, sixty dollars a month is telephone taxes is too much already!
