The court found that whether any of Nike's alleged statements were false "is a disputed issue that has yet to be resolved." The court has not as of yet declared through fact-finding that the promotions were indeed false.
The $100/month that Indonesian workers get paid is more than the median national income. But they are producing thousands of pairs of shoes that each sell for about $100...
Say Nike (or the Asian sweatshops) starts paying them a typical American salary. Wouldn't this cause inflation and make the non-Nike workers even poorer?
If a corporation where indeed legally treated as a collection of individuals, the situation would be totally different -- and probably much better.
The purpose of corporate legal independence is to shield shareholders from being personally responsible for corporate debts. It also allows shareholders to sue the corporation. Without this legal trickery, entrepreneurship would be hindered, masses of people would be thrown into poverty whenever a corporation collapses, and transference of shares between two parties would become a long, drawn-out legal process.
Not allowing someone to buy a certain shoe is not a violation of the First Amendment. He could have bought the shoe and taped his own message over it if he wished.
Not to mention that he doesn't distinguish between slavery and paying people an Indonesian living wage. Which begs the question... why do those Indonesian women choose to work for Nike in the first place? Maybe because they'd be smashing coconuts against rocks for their daily meal otherwise?
Of course, the popular view is that it has something to do with American imperialism keeping them oppressed, or some other such cynical, Marxist self-hatred.
I'm more worried about radiation from laptops computers. That's why I've invented a device to flood the circuits of laptops and prevent them from turning on. Sure it's illegal, but I'm saving myself from radiation so it's perfectly fine!
By the way, a word to the wise: it's probably not a good idea to bring your laptop to LinuxWorld. If you see a man walking around with an aluminum foil helmet, it's already too late for your laptop, you cancer-creating polluter.
The UK also leads Europe in the amount of time worked! The UK and Ireland are more like the USA in their vacation time schemes than the rest of Europe - and surprise! those countries are also more like the US in employment rate.
I was referring to countries such as France (which has adopted a 35-hour week), Germany, and the other euro-zone welfare states that give employees two-month vacations. Those countries have unemployment percentages hovering around 10%.
I get slightly more spam on hotmail. And yes, the school is one of those. The hotmail address is only used here, and the.edu address is used only on "trusted" websites. So the directory and Slashdot are the two media generating my spam.
Of course, I have other addresses which I spread around more liberally, and I use those whenever I feel I'm dealing with a company that's going to sell my address.
My unobfuscated hotmail address gets 2-3 spam e-mails a week due to its presence on Slashdot.
I am also an Ivy League student, and the spammers harvest my "real" address directly from my school's directory, which I cannot opt out of. So students really have little to lose by putting e-mail addresses out here in the clear.
Also in Europe, there is a max number of hours you can work per week.
You are also required to spend at least 3 hours per week in a coffeehouse talking about Engels and Trotsky, and 2 hours per week crouched in bushes near topless beaches, taking pictures of Euro-pop celebrities.
Americans work more hours than anyone except the Japanese. However, one might also note that employment % and productivity are higher in the United States than in Europe.
On the other hand, America's educational results sucks compared to countries which go to school all year 'round.
So one might postulate the following:
1) When people work more, more work gets done. 2) When children learn more, more learning gets done.
Even so, the "little guy" should have been allowed to keep his site.
My highly logical reasoning is thus:
1) I am a highly uninformed Slashdot reader, and my empty mind is prepared to be molded by any biased position Slashdot takes. 2) Therefore, ICANN can never do anything right. 3) Therefore, Peter "domain squatter" Frampton is automatically right.
Well, I was attempting to imply that *BSD is dying while OS X is thriving, but whatever.

Oh c'mon, it's easy. Here's a hint: use the word "dying".

Only in the USA, and even there it is AFAIK regarded by pretty much everyone as one of the bigger fuckups in US legal history.
And by some odd coincidence, the USA has the strongest economy in the world!

Sonny's submission is plagiarized word-for-word from the site he links to.

I'd like a portable X-ray machine to point at anyone who tries to jam my cell phone.
Target launch date in 2012. Nothing will be running Linux in 2012.
output per hour worked
This whole story is about the number of hours worked, which is obviously much lower in those countries!

I believe he actually jumps the shark with water skis.

An Ivy League student channeling Adam Smith? I must need new glasses. Shouldn't you be out protesting the War on Terrorism?

Amazing results, huh?

Actually, the name and the whole bunny thing remind me of Glenda Adams.
"Bad" and "government" next to each other? Re-read the Liberal Media Handbook, Slashdot editors! That's strictly forbidden!
It kinda reminds me of Gary Dell'Abate.
